The main thing it to think of the PC *and* the SDR hardware as one radio
system; not two separate components. You must ground both to a single point
ground with a low impedance, non-resonant RF ground to earth if you use
unbalanced antennas and/or operate in the near field of the antenna.

I experienced the same thing this weekend in a portable situation during
Field Day (note I am an 8 day newbie, so no expert).

From home, with a good ground system and resonant ant, no problem.
But, out in the park for Field Day, with the only a 3ft rebar driven into
the ground for a ground, and a G5RV ant (notoriously has RF on the outside
of the coax), I experienced what you describe. It is RF getting back into
the mic circuit, possibly the firewire cable (USB) and/or computer as well.
Key down, don't say much, or talk very softly, power is low and no problem.
Start talking where you really start pushing out the power, and it gets back
and becomes self-sustaining. The equalizer and compander seemed to make it
worse, I think because it pushes up the mod a bit.

I could be wrong, but a good station RF ground seems to be important.
Since there are those cables between the computer, that also introduces
another RF path that needs to be controlled. I see in the Knowledge Base a
few entries concerning how to put in RF chokes and such on mic lines.

Re: [Flexradio] Strange phenomenon on transmit audio

2010-07-01 Thread Tim Ellison
You are probably over driving the radio. Set the TX meter to ALC and set the
mic gain so that you never exceed -3 dB on peaks. Do not use the MIC meter to
set your levels as it is at the beginning of the TX audio chain and the ALC is
at the end.

tiger direct puts lcd monitors on sale for 99 bux now and then. i picked up a
couple of eMachine refurbished jobbies, one for the office, one for the shack i
think they're 19" or so..there is very little rf hash from it...NICE...
of course bigger IS better, but man the price doubles, or more...

Re: [Flexradio] Monitors

2010-07-01 Thread Michael Tondee
I use the HP 22 inch LCD monitor that came with my PC and a 15 inch flat
panel monitor with the name brand of SYS. It was bought several years
ago for my wife's old PC back when the flat panels were first coming
out. I find the 15 inch monitor is plenty big enough to display my
PowerSDR screen and I use the larger monitor for my log, digital
software and everything else. I must have lucked up because I have moved
the PowerSDR screen between monitors while alternately powering each on
and off and I can really see nothing in the panadapter to be worried
about. I actually like my PowerSDR panel on the more square 15 inch
monitor rather than on the larger wider HP monitor.

[Flexradio] Warnings with Multiband antennas on Field Day

2010-07-01 Thread John Vandenberg

Here is my FD experience:
Had prepared a muti-fan dipole antenna (paralled dipoles with single
feedline) for 40-20-15-10-6m and tested it at home suscesfully with the
F5Ka.

Problems on Field Day:
Since we were A4 (4 HF stations) we had other stations nearby. I
experienced a lot of baseline-noice pumping (abt.20-25DB) due to overload
from the 40m phone station. (we shared the same tree (on one side) as a
ty-point for our antennas. The antennas were on right angles. However I had
expected this and figured I could just get on another band away from the
40m. However I had the same baseline pumping on 20-15-10 and 6 meters. As
it turned out I could not work any band.

After a lot of head scratching I figured out the problem. Since all the
fanned dipoles share the same feedline, the 40m overload on the front end
was still present at the antenna terminals of the F5Ka no matter what band I
operated including 6m. So the solution was to dump the Fanned Dipole.

I replaced the the multi band antenna with a single band 20m dipole and had
no more overload problems. I started to work PSK31 low in the band and had
no problems, even that a 20m phone stations was transmitting nearby (same
tree shared) about 180KHz higher in frequency. However the joy was only one
sided. It did not take long before the owner of the Icom 756 Pro-III ( the
20m phone station) came over to complain about interference. He now
experienced the baseline pumping on his rig.

Since he ran 100W on transmit and I was doing 75W I concluded that that the
Flex 5K had a superior front end.

Anyone having any specs on these rigs for dynamic range to back this up?

Moral of the story:
Do NOT use a multi band antenna on FD unless you are working by yourself
far away from other transmitting stations!

Re: [Flexradio] Monitors

2010-07-01 Thread Tim Ellison
Go to Best Buy (or equivalent big box store) and reset all the monitors on
display to the factory defaults and look at all of them at a distance of thee
feet straight on. Don't get the brightest one, but the one that is the
clearest and has the most accurate color representation.

If it doesn't work in the shack, then take it back and get another one.

BTW, I am using a LG and it works fine.

I sell ASUS 24" monitors as an option with my computers, they are cheap and
ASUS knows how to get the display right (look at their laptops sometime).
You can get them just as cheaply from Newegg as from me (since I just order
them and have them shipped to your address!).

I like my Hanns G 28" screens a lot and very cheap. Its a hunk of desk space
however.

But, the bottom line is its almost impossible to by a bad LCD monitor. I
would be a bit cautious about using TV sets, even though the screen is
large, their resolution is kinda funky (unless you want a BIG DISPLAY at
1333 x 800).

Our club FD operation, N1FD, always runs many stations, only 11A this
year ;^). We have switchable passive bandpass filters for each station
so they can filter out all but the band they are working. That may have
helped with your multi-band antenna.

I thought the good ones were 1080p (1920x1080). I just got a cheap 24" 1080p
monitor from Geeks.com for about $170. I can fit both PowerSDR and fldigi in

I actually only have experience with the ones that don't work when my
computers arrive so it could be a skewed sample for sure. BUT, I haven't had
a call from a TV set user who was running a "traditional" resolution. That

I am running a Samsung SyncMaster P2570 HD "TV" and a Samsung
SyncMaster 204t dual monitor set up. It's a 24.6 inch set to 1920X1080.
The 20.1 inch SyncMaster is set to 1600X1200 and rotated to portrait.
PowerSDR runs on the smaller display. I have a KVM and can change focus
to a different computer and still see PowerSDR in the smaller monitor
and control it via a trackball mouse without changing KVM focus. If you
have RF in the shack you run the risk of turning off the P2570HD. I had
some RF off a 30 meter antenna on a second rig running WSPR in my shack
and the monitor would shut off randomly until I solved that issue.

Re: [Flexradio] Monitors

2010-07-01 Thread Neal Campbell
Steven, are you using DVI or HDMI?

It would be interesting to see if there is a RF intrusion difference between
the 2. I have moved completely to HDMI on my monitors, it looks so pretty!

I think KVMs are a difficult topic in this however. So many issues come from
having 2 video cables and a switch in the path from computer to monitor,
especially in debugging any issues.

I would recommend everyone to get the basic connections down (1 cable, 1
monitor, 1 computer) and working before trying video switching.

Re: [Flexradio] Monitors

2010-07-01 Thread Steven Hess
DVI this is a OLD KVM so I really didn't have a choice of connections.
Where the RF was getting didn't seem to be related to the connections
between the KVM and Monitor. It would shut down watching a DVD via the
HDMI connection.

Steven, are you using DVI or HDMI?

It would be interesting to see if there is a RF intrusion difference
between the 2. I have moved completely to HDMI on my monitors, it
looks so pretty!

I think KVMs are a difficult topic in this however. So many issues
come from having 2 video cables and a switch in the path from computer
to monitor, especially in debugging any issues.

I would recommend everyone to get the basic connections down (1 cable,
1 monitor, 1 computer) and working before trying video switching.

+1 on the Hans G 28". I own several and fussy as I am, I likes 'em.

Note the back panel has HDMI only, (!) so look at your video card
beforehand. You *can* use a DVI->HDMI cable, but at least with my units
power management and auto on/off only works correctly with the HDMI cable.

Also, if you're running an older video card (or newer cheapie) make sure
it'll deliver 1920x1200 over HDMI. Most midrange and above cards made in
the last year or two will, but it doesn't hurt to check.

I use a couple ASUS VK266H monitors in DVI mode and they are fantastic.
Bought them at NewEgg. Shack pic is on Eham or QRZ

I actually only have experience with the ones that don't work when my
computers arrive so it could be a skewed sample for sure. BUT, I haven't
had

a call from a TV set user who was running a "traditional" resolution. That
might explain a lot.

I thought the good ones were 1080p (1920x1080). I just got a cheap 24"
1080p monitor from Geeks.com for about $170. I can fit both PowerSDR and
fldigi in there side-by-side.

I have a 23" wide-screen LG that they sent me as a warranty replacement
for a 19" 4:3. I use the DVI connection.
