None of the Flex radios will transmit outside the ham bands using their PA
output unless unlocked. Both the 5000 and 1500 have low-level (0dBm -- 1mW)
outputs in addition to their PA outputs. Both the 5000 and 1500 will provide
general-coverage TX output at 0dBm through the xvtx outputs without being
unlocked.

That hasn't changed.

Re: [Flexradio] [FlexEdge] 1500 transverter question

2011-02-08 Thread Lloyd Berg
Hi Bob!

I wonder what specific transverter you are trying to interface with the
FLEX-Radio?

I run five different solid state transverters with my FLEX via the
transverter connections.

Most solid state transverters that "require" more than a few milli-watts of
drive, will employ a RF attenuator ( or a big power resistor terminator ) on
the transverter IF input to knock down that 5+ watts from your rig, to the
few milli-watt signal level that is needed for the up conversion to VHF-UHF
process.

In many cases, that RF attenuator in the transverter can easily be reduced,
bypassed, or removed in order to directly interface with the FLEX
transverter connection. Technical info for selecting milli-watt input
signal level should be included with any transverter.

Additionally, the on air transverted VHF or UHF signal will be cleaner when
using a low level input than it will be when you take a high power signal
and knock it down to a few mill-watts for the frequency up conversion.

If possible, I'd recommend you find someone local to configure your
transverter(s) to work with the FLEX milli-watt transverter signal level.
That way you will have the best possible signal with the best possible
radio.

Hope this info is helpful.

Now that is a solid answer!
Looks like Flex missed the boat yet again, I wonder if anyone on the Flex
team actually uses these radios with transverters?
I woud hope that eventually they could write something into the software
to allow a transverter display while using the main power output on their
rigs.

[Flexradio] XP to W7 questions

2011-02-08 Thread Lowell White
Hi Folks,

May I suggest using separate hard drives in the same box?
That way you can keep your installation "as-is" for XP.

Add a new (or just 'another' if one on hand) hard drive to your existing
system and select WHICH hard drive to boot from in your PC's BIOS.
Usually that's a reboot, a Function key and a few selections then another
reboot, after which you are booted in the just-selected O.S.

On the 'new' drive you do a full, new Win 7 install and operate as if it's a
new P.C.

I do this on various boxes and it almost always plays well. It requires no
special software (other than the second O.S.), repartitioning to accommodate
sub-OS tools, etc... just a little patience to make the switch.

I have *never* seen an XP to Win 7 migration go well and MUCH prefer a clean
delineation between the two.

That's my 2 bits.

73,

Lowell

Do yourself a favor:
Buy a SDR computer from Neal Campbell.
Can't afford that? Then pay Neal to set up your computer by remote or
end it to him. Either way he will set it up nicely
Neal built me an AMD 6 core desktop with 8 Gig RAM, dual monitors, 2

faster than my 3.0 MHz core 2 duo with 8 Gb RAM. Both run Win7 by the
way. And I was one who swore I would never leave Win XP. I LOVE Win 7.

Like others have said, you have to do a clean install and
re-load all the software. If you can swing a new SSD at the
same time, you'll be amazed how fast the re-load will go.
SSD's are popping up at around $1.50 per gig on Newegg; I

While I was at it, I re-downloaded the newest versions of
radio-related software, like Fldigi, DM780, VSP manager,
DDUtil, Minideluxe, VAC, and SDR DataTrasfer. THe only one
that needed something special was VAC 4.09, to get the signed

Re: [Flexradio] Transverter fo Flex 1500 Question

2011-02-08 Thread Graham Haddock
Mike:

If you are using the 0 dBm transverter ports, then the FLEX-1500 is already
unlocked.

Unlocking is only a issue if you are trying to use the 5 W RFPA output
port to drive the transverter.

Re: [Flexradio] VU module

2011-02-08 Thread William H. Fite
The Kuhne transverters I mentioned earlier are between $1100 and $1400 each
for 20w output. They do not drift much and they accept an external
frequency reference.

Nice, but the Flex V/U is a lot better deal, even if waiting out the funky
software.

Re: [Flexradio] VU module

2011-02-08 Thread Clay W7CE
A 60W power level doesn't mean it isn't a transverter. Everything
about the V/U module design and description indicates that it is a pair
of internal transverters.

Downeast Microwave offers a 60W 2M transverter for $539 and a 50W 70cm
transverter for $599, for a total price of $1138. However, you will
have two external boxes, in addition to your 5000A, plus power cables,
TX relay cables, and IF cables and switches to make it all play together
(the 5000A only supports one external transverter unless you provide
your own means for switching the IF between transverters). DEMI has
updated their transverters recently, but historically their transverters
drift all over the place as the box heats up during transmit. My 25W
222MHz DEMI transverter drifts as much as 2 kHz as it heats and cools
during long transmit sessions. I finally mitigated most of that with a
fan that only runs during transmit, but it still drifts a few hundred
Hertz. You will have much, much better frequency stability and accuracy
with the FlexRadio V/U module. If you use an external 10 MHz Rubidium
frequency reference with your 5000A you will have +/- 2 Hz accuracy on
70 cm, and even better with a GPS disciplined reference. DEMI is
working on that option, but they don't currently have it.

I have the V/U module installed in my 5000A and I'm quite happy with
it. I haven't done as much on the air testing as I'd like, but bench
tests show that it has the lowest noise figure of any 2M or 70cm
receiver that I've ever owned. Sure, I wish the software was done, but
since I do mostly weak signal work and very little FM, I can be
patient. I have no doubt that FlexRadio will eventually add all the
software enhancements that they have promised. $1300 seems like a very
competitive price for this module from my perspective.

As far as the software not being finished for the V/U, yes, that can be a
deterrent for those wanting to do FM. It rocks on SSB and non-FM digital modes
right now.

BTW, the F5K +U/U is about the same price as what is estimated for the IC-9100
if it ever gets FCC approved.

not hear anything back. Just curious of this is the case.

Could be. Whoever did it knew that the Wiki software keeps around a certain
number of changed versions of the pages so that you can go back to previous
versions. The person who did this knew that they had to change each page
several times in order to ensure that the every old version of the pages
were deleted and replaced with blank pages.

I don't think it was a SPAM-bot because there was no attempt to load the
Wiki with a SPAM payload.

So, it certainly seems like a malicious attempt to destroy the Wiki.

Neal and I are talking about the possibility of adding a login for people
wanting to change the Wiki. Anyone would be able to read it but anyone
wanting to change content or to put up new content will have to register for
a username and password so we can track who is making changes. It will also
prevent anyone from making anonymous changes or doing malicious damage
anonymously.

I don't recall a price of $1100 (approx.) ever being quoted for the VU
module. There *was* a "Sale Price" of $1147 that lasted from late 2009
until right around the time that the VU module was actually available,
at which time the price went back to the originally advertised $1296. I
took advantage of that deal; my card was not charged until my upgraded
rig was ready to ship back to me.

I too am disappointed that the repeater functions are not yet available
in PowerSDR, but I'm intending to play with satellite communications
when I get the antenna up.

Tim, yes I stand corrected, it is not a transverter, but a 200 dollar increase
in cost only a few months after release of the VU module.

Thank you for your timely response

At 60 watts on V and U, it isn't a transverter.

Having a ~100 dB dynamic RX on V and U with a ultra-low NF, yes, the price
is worth it if you are a V/U/microwave enthusiast . If you want to talk on
repeaters, then there are better suited and priced options other than a
F5K+V/U

As far as the software not being finished for the V/U, yes, that can be a
deterrent for those wanting to do FM. It rocks on SSB and non-FM digital
modes right now.

BTW, the F5K +U/U is about the same price as what is estimated for the
IC-9100 if it ever gets FCC approved.

fast the re-load will go.SSD's are popping up at around $1.50 per gig on
Newegg; I just got a 120 gig Vertex2 for $175.
While I was at it, I re-downloaded the newest versions of radio-related
software, like Fldigi, DM780, VSP manager, DDUtil, Minideluxe, VAC, and
SDR DataTrasfer. THe only one that needed something special was VAC 4.09,
to get the signed driver version for the 64 bit version of W7.
Be it known that I'm retired, have plenty of time to play, and a cable based
internet connection. Rebuilding a PC's software was fun.

Subject: [Flexradio] XP to W7 questions

I have one of Neal's Intel i7 boxes that is currently running XP Pro. I am
considering switching to Windows 7 Pro 32 bit. What Flex related problems
can I expect to encounter if I make this change? Do I need a new version of
the VAC software for W7? How about VSP manager? XP is working just fine but
I have some development work that I need to do with W7, AutoCad 2010 and
Visual Studio 2010 and I am down to just one computer that can run all this
stuff.

Thanks, Mark K5XH

There is nothing special about a XP-configured Flex system, in terms of dual

A very good step by step (inch by inch yuk yuk yuk) tutorial is here

Re: [Flexradio] XP to W7 questions

2011-02-08 Thread David W LeJeune
I went from XP to Win 7 64 bit with no problems other than getting the
signed drivers for VAC and vspMgr. A quick e-mail to the respective
developers solved that issue. It is possible to run Win7 in the development
(?) mode with unsigned drivers. I have a Dell XPS9100 that does nicely with
DPC's under 80. I've not tried to get it below that since PowerSDR does
fine as is. I also have MixW, cwType, and MMTTY runing with no problems. I
also do software development, and run Visual Studio and other IDE's
concurrently with PowerSDR with no issues.

Going to a laptop for my development work is out of the question. I have one
and I don't consider it at all acceptable for my needs. I am spoiled and
must have dual monitors for one thing. Buying a new box would be an
excellent idea but I can't get what I need for $500 - and I don't have $500
to spend right now anyway! There is also the matter of space in the
shack/computer room. I don't have the room to set up another computer. It
just seems to make more sense to get the i7 switched to W7 and use it for
all my needs. I took a fairly new Dell that we weren't using from the
office and put W7 Pro on it and tried it out with the Flex. I got it running
without any problems but I did not set up the VAC and virtual COM ports and
that is what I am worried about.

My initial impression of W7 is that it is a much better OS than Vista! Just
so happened that my main office computer (XP) crashed and I have swapped out
my old one for the one I put W7 on at home and I am using it at work. I like
W7 so far.

Neal's suggestion of using a virtual W7 machine is interesting but I know
nothing about how all that works. I will look into that a bit further.

Thanks for everyone's comments!

With the proper parallel card, it would be nice to run in XP and use W7 other

It might be great if someone did a detail write up on dual boot Xp with Win7

But in my view--and even with the hassle of reinstalling the apps--Win7 is

I personally think Win7 is more stable than XP and I definitely like running
it better. It took me quite a while to get DPC numbers down on Win7 to match
what I could do on XP but I am there now (with Asrock motherboards).

The problem is that MS doesn't have a way to migrate from XP directly to
Win7. I have experimented on 3 different machines with laplink's PC Mover
migration software. I have had to resort to complete reinstalls (I may just
have configurations that do not tolerate PC Mover well).

Yes. Two things come to mind here:

1. There is no conceivable use for the 3-band equalizer. Either eliminate it
or make the 10-band the default setting.

2. Most of the time all the EQ is done in 4 or five of the bands, i.e. 250,
500, 1000, 2000, and 4000. As Ian suggested, putting the bands closer
together would allow much better adjustment in the all-critical 300-3000 Hz
range. Changing the centers to 150, 300, 600, 1200, 2400, 4800 would help
too. going to a 1/3 octave would be better still. Best of all would be a two
or three band parametric EQ.

Re: [Flexradio] XP to W7 questions

2011-02-08 Thread Neal Campbell
There are a couple of options:
1. Buy Parallels or VMWare workstation (or just download VirtualBox) and
install windows 7 in a virtual machine
2. Dual boot windows 7 on a second drive
3. Upgrade to Windows 7.

The problem with upgrading is there is no direct migration path from Xp to
windows 7 so it is basically a new installation.

I run XP inside a Parallels virtual machine on my development computer (as
well as vista) and it works really well. You can allocate 1-x cores to it (x
being the number of hyperthreads on your machine).

Re: [Flexradio] XP to W7 questions

2011-02-08 Thread Ross Stenberg
I would just go to one of the big retailers and spend $500 for a nice AMD
quad core ruining W7 64 with a Terabyte drive and 6 GB of memory and leave
the SDR box as it is.

Subject: [Flexradio] XP to W7 questions

I have one of Neal's Intel i7 boxes that is currently running XP Pro. I am
considering switching to Windows 7 Pro 32 bit. What Flex related problems
can I expect to encounter if I make this change? Do I need a new version
of
the VAC software for W7? How about VSP manager? XP is working just fine
but

I have some development work that I need to do with W7, AutoCad 2010 and
Visual Studio 2010 and I am down to just one computer that can run all
this

stuff.

Thanks, Mark K5XH

[Flexradio] TX Equaliser

2011-02-08 Thread Ian Scoble
Hi All

I was wondering if the two top bands in the Tx Eq could could be
moved down the band i.e to have a EQ setting at around 3Khz, this to me
would be much more useful to EQ'ing your TX audio in the marjority of
stations as it at least falls within a 3K tx bandwidth.
