Hello All,

My scope display is a flat line. I have shutoff my 5000A including the
power supply and so far I have not been able to get the scope to work at all
and that includes the Panascope display. All other displays work just fine.

I am running a 5000A with Core2duo machine running XP professional. All
software is up to date with all updates and I'm running 2.0.22 using the
default display. RX2 was off. I thought the scope function was working on
2.0.22 when I first installed it but I don't remember for sure. The scope
function definitely worked with 1.18.5

I simply plugged the 1/4" phone plug into the 3000 front panel phone
socket, then got a Radio Shack RJ-45 socket with press-on connectors
(cost about $4 as I recall) and ran my mic power supply audio out
into the RJ-45. I used a straight-thru RJ-45 cable to connect the
socket to the RJ-45 on the 3000 front panel. Ask if you need more
details.

I am familiar with the connector used by David Clark headsets. It appears to
have two rings but it does not. It is just the way that the connector is
constructed. If you look at the area of the plug where you wire to the
conductors you will find only three connections, including ground/sleeve.

I plug right into the phones jack and into the MIC jack of my computer and

Why solder on a plug if you've already got one in the computer?

I've done that same thing at times with an electret element, and agree

talking about for the aviation headsets (which mostly use electrets in
their microphones). Take what ever dead, pretty, microphone you have
and graft an electret element into it and you might have all you need.
Especially with the 10 band EQ in the Flex.

get great audio and plug & play compatibility (or worst case, you or
someone solders a new connector on a mic). There are some very
good products, used & new, at great prices, if you shop the music, public

The Flex has so much audio processing power, just about any mic can be

That's the standard GA setup. 1/4 for the headphones, .206 for the
microphone and PTT. As mentioned before, I think the helicopter
headsets have a single plug with 4 wires (tip, 2 rings, and ground).

What I usually do when feeding a radio from mine is feed +5 volts
through a 1K ohm potentiometer to the hot side of the mic, then pick
off the audio via a 1uf cap on the slider of the pot. I put an audio
bypass cap on the DC side of the potentiometer and make sure the 5
volt source I'm using is very quiet - usually I run 12 volts into a
78L05 and a couple of caps to get a good, clean, quiet, DC bias
voltage. Using the pot lets me adjust the audio output easily to match
the radio's requirements.

I find I have to set the audio very low, otherwise a lot of background
noise gets picked up, especially in the airplane. Using an audio taper
pot helps in being able to adjust it to a good level for the
microphone input. When you get it right, especially with the noise
canceling mics, all you hear is your voice, nothing in the background.
Not as much of a concern in the shack. :-)

ring 2 -- mic ground

I've seen this referred to as a NATO Plug and Wikipedia calls it a type

Poking around some, it appears that a helicopter headset is a single
plug wired as:

tip -- mic
ring 1 -- phones
ring 2 -- mic ground
sleeve -- phones ground

I've seen this referred to as a NATO Plug and Wikipedia calls it a type
U-174/U or Nexus TP120.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRS_connector#Aircraft_headsets

Standard GA headsets have two plugs, a 1/4" either mono or stereo for
the headphones and a .206" TRS for the mic.

Brian,

OK, I think I understand. It is odd that the Flex supplied adapter
from the 8 pin mic connection only requires the use of two contacts to
run my Heil for both microphone and PTT. That adaptor must have some
pins of the 8 pin connector wired together.

I will make a new .206 to 8 pin adapter.

So how do you connect the 4 wires on the .206" connector to your

It depends on how your adaptor cable is wired. Just a moment ago I
sent the pinout for an aviation headset mic plug. It is:

tip -- ptt
ring -- mic hot (+)
sleeve -- ptt and mic ground (-)

GA aviation microphones are based on old carbon mics. They are low
impedance (under 200 ohms) and require a bias supply. In fact, they
are identical to how Icom handles microphones and wiring up an
aviation headset mic to an Icom radio is just a matter of a few direct
connections.

In the case of wiring to the Flex you need to make sure you provide a
bias supply (+5V at least) to the mic in the headset. So you need
about a 100 ohm resistor from the +5V pin on the Flex mic connector to
the sleeve on the headset mic connector. I also use a 100K resistor
from the sleeve to the mic(+) input pin on the Flex mic connector.
That should make everything work.

If you need more detail let me know and I will try to draw a schematic.

The microphone plug on your David-Clark (DC) headset really is only
tip/ring/sleeve. It only looks like it has two rings. Here is the pinout:

Tip -- PTT
Ring -- mic audio
Sleeve -- ground.

Now your DC headset does not provide PTT unless you plug in an additional
PTT between headset mic plug and the radio. Some headsets (AvComm) actually
have a backup PTT button on the headset itself so I always go ahead and wire
up the PTT part of the circuit.

There is but you don't need to solve it. The impedance of the aviation
headset is very low and the output high so it will work into any
transceiver without a problem. The major problem is to pad down the
output level so that you won't overdrive the mic input of the radio.
That just requires a pair of resistors.

Why would you need 1/8"? None of the Flex radios use that. Regardless,
I built a cable with the proper .206" TRS jack on one end and the
radio's mic plug on the other. The requisite resistors live inside the
.206" jack housing. I need to carry mic ground (shield), PTT, bias
supply (+5V), and mic audio to between the mic plug and the mic jack
for the headset's mic plug.

I am making an assumption: that you are comfortable fabricating cables

In the past few days, there has been talk of converting an aviation
headset for use in amateur radio.

Two questions:

1. Is there an impedance difference between an aviation set and an
amateur set? If so, how did you solve it?

2. How did you change the aviation PJ-068 (,206") plug to 1/8"?

Re: [Flexradio] Mic

2011-04-27 Thread K9DUR
Bill & Brian,

Thanks for letting me know about most aviation headsets being stereo now. I
will admit that my experience with them is a little dated. I spent 27 years
in Civil Air Patrol, but retired about 8 years ago & haven't much exposure
to light aircraft since.

[Flexradio] FXpad released

2011-04-27 Thread Giuseppe Campana

Hi,

FXpad is released:
http://www.woodboxradio.com/download/Fxpad_v1_setup.zip

FXpad, the CAT software designed as an extra control panel for PowerSDR and
FlexRadio Systems transceivers, requires Tmate for proper working, however,
it also works without it but some functions are not available.

Fully functional for a trial period of 15 days FXpad gives, in a nice GUI
(designed for touch screen), the normal most used transceiver's controls and
adds new features such as:

- four scales analog multimeter (inherited from BobMeters)
- 4 dedicated DSP filters for each mode (fully programmable)
- direct control (with Tmate) of RIT - XIT - SPLIT and SubRX
- keyboard for direct frequency entry
- keyboard for 12 Macro CAT commands (DDUTIL style, by K5FR)
- direct control of VAC and I&Q out to VAC

FXpad requires high polling rate virtual serial port for connection
to PowerSDR and

at least Windows XP with dual core PC or W7, to operate efficiently.

Fxpad, having been designed for touch screen, offering the best of
himself in union
of HAMpad (the small USB monitor with resistive touch sensor) or
others similar monitors.

Fxpad works with FLEX-5000, FLEX-3000, FLEX-1500 (with limited multimeter)
