I didn't see a reply to this so...

The easiest way is probably to use a parallel port card to interface to
DDUTIL. DDUTIL only talks to parallel port cards. Then connect the
parallel port output signals to a Unified Microsystems BCD-10
decoder/interface card.

http://www.unifiedmicro.com/decoder.html

That will convert the signals from DDUTIL to a series of optically isolated
relay closures to select the correct band relays in the amplifier.

You can probably use my setup guide for interfacing a F5K with PSDR to the
ALS-1300 amplifier. That shows the settings for PSDR and DDUTIL to select
the various bands.

Re: [Flexradio] Silence must meant something.

2011-05-26 Thread Lee Mushel

Guy,

I suppose it was about a year after I got my 5000A that this terrible QRN
appeared. Of course, it is your responsibility to show that the source
isn't actually inside your QTH and I did this by operating the rig from
battery power and turning off the main breaker. I didn't get much help from
the ham community except for a visit by a retired power company maintenance
foreman who was also a radio amateur. I started out by showing him what
the noise looked like on the panadapter and after that I could see I had
more work to do and he said, "Let me listen to it." After listening for
about three seconds he announced that it was one of the metal oxide varistor
lightning arrestors (in rural areas there are a lot of these things) "And I
don't think it's very far away." My rural electric co-op buys it's power
from a company headquartered about 70 miles away. I called the co-op and
they gave me the number of the engineering department of the supplier and I
called and told them about the situation. The engineer said he'd look
into it and I was fairly sure that his words were all I would ever get!
Boy, was I wrong. A few days later a very large tracked "vehicle with
bucket" showed up. As I soon found out, this was necessary because the
defective system was located in what was almost a swamp in a valley on my
property and very hard to access but they did and I've never had any more
QRN!

I guess what I want to say is that my experience seems counter to that of
many (but maybe not) and that the power company reacted quickly to fix the
problem after I was able to assure them that the trouble was, indeed,
theirs! They do have equipment to find this sort of thing!

2011-05-26 Thread Steven L Hess
Guy thanks for the suggestion. I have investigated the source of my QRN
and it existed prior to my acquiring my Flex-3000. It is on a pole about
35 feet or so laterally from my shack providing electrical current to my
home and three others. I am sure the transformer's emissions are well
within limits it's just my proximity to it. The QRN on all bands but
it's at its worst on 30 meters and lower and gets worse the farther down
the bands you go. 6 meters is the exception to this as it's pretty bad
on 6 meters too. I am in town so I get town QRN and I am right under the
power lines behind my house almost. Adding more ferrites might work a
bit but it's coupling into the Antennas too. 31 mix seems to be the
"cure" for many things. When I am flush and can remember it I'll order
up some snap on chokes. I am 2 long blocks from the electrical
substation that provides power to this area too. The wife has all say
on where I live and she wants to live here.

to my radio P.S. (linear), computer, monitor and peripherals. In fact
I put three of these on the power strip that powers my 'puter &
monitor & speakers; I kept adding them until there was no further
affect. I'll be more than happy to supply you with a source and P/N
for these items if you wish.

One more thing that reduced noise here was changing antenna types.
Even though I live in a rural area my situation does not permit much
of an antenna so I started out using an End Fedz dipole for 20m. A few
weeks ago I purchased an UltraMax100 and used a 66ft wire instead of
the 24ft that came with the matching network. I was startled to see
another 5dB drop in "apparent" QRN. I have seen days when the QRN is
so quiet that it is sitting below -130dBm!! I might add that the band
was pretty dead also...

Hope this helps.

Steve,

Yes, Austin is truly the Live Music Capital of the World(TM). See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_Austin

My wife and I were planning to
go to the Broken Spoke several years ago to celebrate our anniversary. We
decided to go to Antones at the last minute instead to hear blues. My wife
read the next morning in the paper that Willie Nelson, Waylin Jennings, and
Chris Christopherson showed up unannounced for to jam all evening. Rats!

Austin City Limits has been on the air since 2007.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_City_Limits and http://www.acl-live.com/
.

South By Southwest has become a huge international event each year
http://sxsw.com/.

So if you love music, you can always find it in Austin. Oh and you can eat
at a different BBQ restaurant every day for a year and still be eating out.

Maybe we need to have an open house when we get settled into our new
offices.

[Flexradio] Flex-3000 wanted to buy`

2011-05-26 Thread Eddie DeYoung
Hi Fellow Flexer's. I took the F5KA on previous 3D2A Dxpedition's, but found
it a little too bulky for the suitcase. Thought it would be better to take a
F3 instead. Anyone got a Flex-3000 they would sell us at a fair price? We
would consider a Flex-1500.but Dxpedition life is too short for QRP.heh heh

[Flexradio] Reminder - FlexRadio moving tomorrow

2011-05-26 Thread Gerald Youngblood
Dear Customers,

This is a reminder that we are moving our offices tomorrow. We will be
transitioning our VoIP phone system tomorrow and will have to forward phone
calls temporarily to another number. We will be taking messages and
returning calls as we can tomorrow. We appreciate your patience during the
transition.

[Flexradio] Automatic bandswitching options for a homebrew amp

2011-05-26 Thread Michael Tondee
I'm staring to build the ARRL " homebrew challenge" amp kit that I
bought recently. It is to go behind my 1500. One thing I've been
thinking about is that it would be nice to have automatic band
switching. I've seen the threads before concerning commercial amps but
I'm wondering if one is starting from scratch with a homebrew amp like
this, what is the simplest route to go? Obviously I think I would use
DDutil but how? Is a parallel port the only option? If so would one of
the cheapie PCI plug in parallel port cars work or would I need full
parallel port functions? I don't see why I would but want to be sure.
What type of circuitry is used to accomplish the translation from the
info DDUtil sends from the PP to the relays of my amplifier? Some type
of logic board I would guess. I'm totally in the dark as to how this
done so if someone could point me in the right direction where I can
start researching, I'd appreciate it. Also would be nice if this was a
fairly inexpensive project!...lol

Thanks,
Michael, W4HIJ

[Flexradio] flex5000

2011-05-26 Thread kerry brown
Just received a Flex5000A from Martin Lynch in the UK, had the ATU and RX2
fitted. Loaded the software this
morning to find Usb is down on the Lsb. Just in case the stations were on Usb I
moved to 6mtrs once again station
were on Lsb. So tried double side band only place to find life was in the Lsb
side of Dsb. Now I did have this problem with
my SDR1000 and fixed the problem. How can I the tuning to Usb where I know
stations are working, not hear them on Lsb
Not much good if I am in Lsb mode as the mic would have to be in Usb. If you
know what I mean?

[Flexradio] BSOD on flexradiomidi.sys - fixed

2011-05-26 Thread Michael Walker
All

I was getting many BSOD's on flexradiomidi.sys (as in 1 per hour).

As I started to debug it, I noticed that I had 3 versions of PowerSDR
installed plus the Flex driver.

Just to be sure, I uninstalled all things PowerSDR and Flex and then
re-installed the current version 2.0.22.

I then tested both with the used 1500 I got at Dayton (it was the only 1 I
saw) and my 3000. So far, no more BSODs.

If you are having problems, try the above.

BTW, Gboost is pretty slick. I was glad to see that I had my box pretty
well tuned before I started to us it. However, it does get me some more
speed (another 10%).

73, Mike VA3MW

(here is hoping I haven't spoken too soon on the BSOD's)
