Re: [Flexradio] Flex Logging Software

2012-12-04 Thread Thomas Bewick
Well thanks guys. Lots more options to choose from all the time. Makes it
all fun though. I have the advantage of just starting to get set up with my
new flex and not keeping logs before this, so I can literally "try before I
buy". I am going to download the trial and free versions of the ones people
have shared and give them each a try over the next month and reserve
judgement on them until I have seen what will meet my needs. I do, as I
said, have FLDIGI and DDutil working and as Brian said that is half the
battle and a good place to start. I also wanted to add thanks to Jim for
sending me a screenshot of Logger32, I realized that Logger32 is probably
working correctly on my 64bit computer but since I did not have any data
and contacts entered it was not displaying in the full layout so it looked
strange. I am going to give that a try again too, along with N3FJP's AcLog,
Commcat, hrd, and the many others suggested. And of course I am already
using Win-EQF since earlier today. Lots of homework. I am off to work
tonight after having a nice day off last night to play radio last night and
today which is why I was able to look at these and respond so much to the
list.
Thanks again everyone, 73, Tom N2BEW

Re: [Flexradio] Flex Logging Software

2012-12-04 Thread Michael Ruttenberg
There is a section in the book Computers in Amateur Radio by Steve White G3ZVW
that talks about this very subject. I admit to having written the section in
this book (I don't earn commission on sales).

The short answer is no one logger does everything.

My own opinion is that as a general logger don't rule out contest loggers like
N1MM which has a very good DX and VHFDX module for general logging. It does not
keep track of awards or interface directly with LoTW, where some other software
packages do.

It's horses for courses.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex Logging Software

2012-12-04 Thread Brian Lloyd
The simplest approach to getting logging going is to install and use
fldigi. It may not be the best way but installing fldigi and setting it up
to make it work with PowerSDR gets you 99% of the way there. You get the
digital modes and you get a decent logging program. It may not have all the
features of the other programs but it has the features that most people
need. It is, IMHO, the best place to start and gain experience. Once you
have that working for awhile you can then determine what additional
features you need, if any, and then go looking for them.

My situation is a little different. To achieve full duplex satellite
operation, I run two instances of PowerSDR to two FLEX radios. I also use
LoTW. Is there a logging that will read the modes and frequencies of both
FLEXs and also upload to LoTW?

Subject: [Flexradio] Flex Logging software

I know this is a loaded question because there is probably as many answers
as HAM's but, I just got a flex 1500 (love it) and I am looking for a good
basic logging program that will pick up the time and frequency for a qso
from the flex. I don't contest and am looking for something easy to use
for rag chewing, a little DXing, and every day use that would be good to
use long term and will upload to LoTW and eQSL.

I guess the real question I have, as I think about it, is how do you get
logging software to pick up the frequency and time while using a flex with
PowerSDR?

Thanks, Tom N2BEW

Re: [Flexradio] Flex Logging software

2012-12-04 Thread Ray, K9DUR
Tom,

Only one program can have a serial port open at a time. This is where
DDUtil by Steve, K5FR, comes in. You tell DDUtil to talk to PowerSDR. Then
you set up additional serial port pairs for each program you need to have
access the PowerSDR CAT information. DDUtil then acts like a "traffic cop",
routing the PowerSDR CAT commands/data among all of the programs that need
it.

For example:

Set up the following virtual Serial port pairs:
COM7<-->COM17
COM8<-->COM18
COM9<-->COM19

Set the PowerSDR CAT port to COM17
Set the DDUTil "Radio CAT" port to COM7

Set the Win-EQF CAT port to COM18
Set the DDUtil "RP1" port to COM8

Set the FLDigi CAT port to COM9
Set the DDUtil "RCP2" port to COM19

Both Win-EQF & FLDigi can now talk to PowerSDR at the same time & everyone
is happy.

NOTE: The COM port numbers used above are only examples. You can use any
numbers for the serial port pairs that you wish.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex Logging software

2012-12-04 Thread Thomas Bewick
New problem.

I set up COM7 and COM17 and got Win-EQF working.
So then I set up FLDIGI following the directions on their wiki and got
Fldigi working with the same COM port pair COM7 and COM17
But, then when I start Win-EQF it says it cannot open COM7, because it is
in use by FLDIGI of course.
So, I tried to make a new port pair to use for each program, but PowerSDR
only has one port to use for CAT. In my case 17.
So how do you get more then one program to work off the one port in
PowerSDR at the same time, in may case FLDIGI and Win-EQF?
Is that what DDUtil does?

Thanks!

Re: [Flexradio] Flex Logging software

2012-12-04 Thread Michael Walker
For most Flex users, the following are key pieces of software:

   - VSPManager (or ComOCom - but VSP Manager seems better)
   - DDUtil

DDUtil is the key 'octopus' you need to handle just about all your RS232
interfacing to the radio, logging programs, rotators, etc.

OK,
I am using Win-EQF and following Ray, K9DUR's (sorry in another response I
called you Mike) set up and used VSPMgr to set up COM 7 and COM 17,
and then used the set up instructions on the WIn-EQF site for the flexradio
and it immediately picked up my frequency in Win-EQF.
This looks like a great program by the way.
Thanks to all for your help!

Re: [Flexradio] Flex Logging software

2012-12-04 Thread Ray, K9DUR
Tom,

A couple of others have answered with suggestions of different logging
software packages. There are many different logging programs out there, &
each has its own pros & cons. Which one to use is mainly a matter of
personal preference. Personally, I also use DXLabs/DXKeeper.

However, they did not address your real question:

"I guess the real question I have, as I think about it, is how do you get
logging software to pick up the frequency and time while using a flex with
PowerSDR?"

Whatever logging program you use, it will pick up the time from the PC
clock. As for frequency & mode, any program that supports CAT will be
designed to talk to the radio via a serial port. You need to use a 3rd
party virtual serial port program such as VSPmgr (available from Steve,
K5FR). You use this program to create a pair of virtual serial ports, for
instance COM7 & COM17. Set your logging software to use COM7 & set PowerSDR
to use COM17 and you are all set.

You

DX4Win is working fine with mine.

I know this is a loaded question because there is probably as many answers

basic logging program that will pick up the time and frequency for a qso
from the flex. I don't contest and am looking for something easy to use
for rag chewing, a little DXing, and every day use that would be good to
use long term and will upload to LoTW and eQSL.

I guess the real question I have, as I think about it, is how do you get
logging software to pick up the frequency and time while using a flex with
PowerSDR?

I use DXkeeper, part of DXlabs suite, it was not my first choice, ands it
seemed to need aa steep learning curve, but the others I tried were lacking
in some way. The sutwewill do /everything/except get the beer from the
fridge (but I think Dave, who maintains it is working on that).

It has very good support from Dave an others, and any questions are almost
instantly answered on the mailing list.

I've been using it for nearly a year with my flex1500 (Mainly digital) and
am very pleased with it. it handles logging easily importing almost
everthing from PSDR and/or the digital program. QSLing via LOTW and EQSL are
only a\couple of mouse clicks away. It has basic contesting facilities (no
scoring) for submitting the occasional contest.

I highly recommend it.
