Re: [Flexradio] education/information

2013-02-02 Thread Michael
I have to say that I'm surprised by the hostility that still exist from
some folks with the mere mention of SDR. A lot of folks are just
resistant to change even if it's change for the better as in the case of
SDR. I cannot imagine ever owning a so called "conventional" radio ever
again. I still will never forget the time I was in an online chat during
a live broadcast of the Dayton Hamvention and mentioned the fact that I
owned a Flex and a guy responded back to me that "using the internet to
operate was not real radio" as if I was using CQ 100 or something. It's
amazing the misconceptions that some people have. Good luck Lee!

Re: [Flexradio] OK, this old-timer finally upgraded from 2.3.5 to 2.5.3

2013-02-02 Thread Mark Lunday
Ok I somehow KNEW it was operator error!

Here's what I did

1. Under 2.3.5, export the latest database
2. Upgrade to 2.5.3, call it DB1
3. Run receiver calibration
4. Export the 2.5.3 database, call it DB2
5. Download and install latest SDR Transfer software
6. Run the SDR Transfer Software, pick DB1 as source and DB2 as destination
7. Select data by CATEGORY
8. Click on SELECT ALL CATEGORIES
9. Click on TRANSFER DATA

That's when I got the error that some of the data could not be transferred.

What's interesting is I tried to reproduce the error tonight, and I could
not. <*SIGH*>

per spec you should be able to do so, firewire is a daisy-chained bus.
While you should be able to do it, I would test it first! I would hope you

Generally no manufacturer driver is needed as the WHQL version is supplied
with the OS.   So you more than likely have the latest.   Best way to check,
use the Driver Update in Device Manager and let windows search.    You won't
find anything too new on the SIIG site unless it’s a specialist card.   Even
the LATEST one on my Windows 8 machine is dated 6/21/2006.

[Flexradio] CMS/Website for accessories for Flex radio

2013-02-02 Thread Robert Costa, KB6QXM
All,

As the type of configuration information is usually lost in the thousands of
reflector posts, would someone be interested in building a website that holds
documents for the configuration information for accessory configurations.

The site would have to use some flavour of content management software.

I would do this for the Flex community, but my life is too saturated now and it
will be at least another year before I could start on the project. The Flex
wiki might be a good place for documents such as this, but the Wiki does not
use a CMS system and the Wiki is offline as far as I know.

There are so many non-Flex items and software that can be configured to make
your Flex the ultimate all-in-one box.

Converters, pre-selectors, external audio processing equipment, transverters
etc. etc.

Flex Radio systems cannot or will not put this type of information onto their
site, so that leaves either building a website/CMS site or waiting until the
Wiki is up and running and put the documents onto that site.

I also like the idea of training videos either using Captivate or simple video
captures and links to YouTube.

Any thoughts?

Robert

Re: [Flexradio] Optical Isolation for Flex-1500

2013-02-02 Thread W5CUL
Les,

May want to check Digi-Key for an optical isolator chip for USB. Just be
sure it can handle the target data rate. I have found that it is pretty
easy to assemble your own optical isolator based off the chipset
manufacturer's data sheet; they typically provide examples within. I had to
do the same thing for an Ethernet to Serial adapter on a device I had built.
I suffered a voltage spike across the LAN that not only damaged my Ethernet
adapter, but also damaged the MAX232 on one of the boards that was connected
to it.

It appears that my Flex-1500 may have suffered an ESD related failure.
This used to happen frequently to the C-IV jack of my Icom 746 Pro and
IC-910H transceivers, until I purchased an optically isolated CI-V
interface to remove any potential ground loop between the computer and
the radios.

Is a similar interface available for the Flex-1500?

2013-02-02 Thread Ray, K9DUR
SWRplotter v1.1.2 has been released & is available for download from my
website.

This release includes the following bug fixes & enhancements:
1. Fixed bug where program would hang if started with no communications with
PowerSDR after COM port has been selected.

2. Fixed bug causing wrong number of points to be plotted if only a portion
of the band was selected.

3. Re-formatted chart to only include the portion of the band selected.

4. Corrected text of uninstall entry in Start menu.

Re: [Flexradio] OK, this old-timer finally upgraded from 2.3.5 to 2.5.3

2013-02-02 Thread Alan
Mark,

When I made the upgrade, SDR Data Transfer worked perfectly. Whenever I
have a problem, it is that I have selected the wrong source information.

Subject: [Flexradio] OK, this old-timer finally upgraded from 2.3.5 to 2.5.3

I thought I would be able to use SDR Data Transfer to transfer my database
settings. Wrong. Must have read that somewhere that it would NOT work, but
forgot.

1. I had already backed up my database from 2.3.5
2. I exported the database from 2.5.3 after doing the calibration
routine. Then I tried to transfer the data from 2.3.5 to 2.5.3. FAIL.
Error message, not designed to take data from 2.3.5. The TX profiles did
not come over. Although it did appear to transfer over the memories.

OK, back to square 1 on setting up the new SDR settings. Which is OK.
Probably good to start fresh.

Luckily I saved screenshots of every setup menu.

I am still hearing just an occasional slight jitter/stutter on high speed
QSK CW. Not as much as before.

I am getting occasional audio "pop" like the buffer is dropping out. I had
this before and fixed it with a setting, but can't remember how.

Re: [Flexradio] Optical Isolation for Flex-1500

2013-02-02 Thread G0DDX
Hi,
I don't understand what you are trying to do. There is no CIV style
interface jack on the F1500. You do it all in software.
You need a virtual com port program like VSP from K5FR or Com0Com from
http://com0com.sourceforge.net/

Then set up the VSP's and connect that way. You need a pair of virtual
serial ports to connect to each end of the virtual circuit. For ease of use,
I do like Com1 & com11 or com2 and com12 as pairs, its easier to remember
which VSP's are pairs.

I use Ham Radio Deluxe in just this way.
You will need to set up HRD (or whatever) to talk to the VSP, then the other
end of the VSP to the Flex.

Even for say PSK or RTTY, you then use Virtual Audio Cable in a similar
manner.
I use http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.htm

You don't need separate isolated connection to the Flex. It can all be done
over the USB connection with software.

Hope this helps

Subject: [Flexradio] Optical Isolation for Flex-1500

It appears that my Flex-1500 may have suffered an ESD related failure.
This used to happen frequently to the C-IV jack of my Icom 746 Pro and
IC-910H transceivers, until I purchased an optically isolated CI-V interface
to remove any potential ground loop between the computer and the radios.

Is a similar interface available for the Flex-1500?
