Re: [Flexradio] Flex Community

2014-09-09 Thread Eric Wachsmann
I'd like to weigh in here and say that I personally recognize that not
everyone is going to prefer a single interface. I suspect that if we took
a poll on the community, there would be many people that are using it and
are happy with it. This does not negate the views expressed here with
regard to push vs. pull, simplicity of use, etc. These are factors we
faced when putting the community in place. However, there are also
significant advantages for new users with the community. For example, they
can type in a question and be presented with similar subjects that may give
them the answer for which they are searching. This is often less
intimidating to someone that isn't as familiar with how to search a mailman
list. There are other advantages such as the ability to have an
announcement that sticks around (as opposed to the half life of a few days
on a list like this). It is worth noting that many email clients, like the
gmail web-client, have automatic conversation grouping that doesn't work
well with the community auto-generated email subject lines. This is a
point where the tool could be improved.

What I'm hearing is that not everyone prefers vanilla ice cream over
chocolate and that's OK. I don't think it's wrong, it is a valid opinion.
"Not wrong, just different" as someone once said. We can't be Baskin
Robins and have 31 different communication mechanisms. The logistics to do
that just don't make business sense for us. But please know that we do
appreciate your feedback and we are listening. I don't expect the
[FlexRadio] mailman list (this one) is going anywhere anytime soon.

The community sends e-mail responses, not full topics. If you want to
group the e-mails response by subject, your e-mail client will need to
perform that function.

Here is how to set your profile for getting emails from the FlexRadio
Community:

   1. Log in with your user name and password.
   2. On the right hand side of the black bar across the top, you will see
your log in name with a down arrow to the right. Click on that spot.
   3. Select "Profile" from the drop down box.
   4. At the top of page mine says: "Gerald - K5SDR's Profile"
   5. Under that it says: "Activity | Profile Information | Email &
   Notifications"
   6. Click on Email & Notifications
   7. Under "Email Addresses" make sure you enter the email address you
wish to use. You can add multiple addresses.
   8. You are given four check box options regarding what types of mail you
want sent. I copied the list below.
   9. You may want to set up a filter in your email system as I do so you
can read them at your leisure.

   - Send me email at *my primary email address* about *new replies* on
topics I have posted, replied to, or followed
   - Send me email at *my primary email address* about *new topics* posted
   on products that I follow
   - Send me email at *my primary email address* about *stars* on my
   replies and comments
   - Send me email at *my primary email address* about *me toos* on topics
   I have posted
   - Hope all this helps.
   - 73,
   - Gerald

I would like to engage further on this conversation but I have to leave
right now for the TAPR DCC conference this afternoon here in Austin.

Just a note that I have my community profile set to send me an email with
every posting on the community. I have gmail set to filter them into a
folder where it organizes them by subject. I also have the Community set
to automatically log in using my Chrome browser.

I will plan to respond further but it will probably be early next week
before I can.

Hi All
I have to agree about emails, being a secretary of a club and having
to keep an eye on whats gets posted is important, I don¹t want to have to
keep logging in every hour to find out what
has or has not been posted, fortunately the system that we use allows each
member to subscribe to individual topics and get any posts sent to their
email inbox, this seem a good way of doing things.

If this facility is not available then I prefer getting all emails
to my email inbox, I have not got the time to keep logging into forums, in
fact all the other forums that I monitor all send out emails to me.

actually the comments that have been posted have been unanimous. But
history suggests that they will go unanswered, or if answered, will be
