Simon,

With all due respect, if you are so unhappy with the radio, then just sell it.
Life is too short to be unhappy about things you can control.

Burt

with respect

I am sure I/Y/K would never get away with releasing a radio in beta sold on
with a promise of a full release soon .. only for 9 months later still to be
promising a working release.

And its not just CW that was broken ... I read the sales blurb again on Waters
and Stanton site last night to reconfirm what I purchased and there are
many functions broken or not working or still being developed that are in the
sales - the sales reads more like a wish list than actual live features.

Do I expect it to be perfect - no

Do I expect it to be 99% - yes

I paid a significant amount of money for my flex 1500 - this isnt a home built
kit, or group of amateurs working in their spare time, this is a commercial
sale, selling in major magazines, selling a product that is not (IMHO) working

I bought the flex1500 on good faith knowing that a full release in work - yes
they have had issues around a USB driver but what worries me is the vast amount
of stuff not related to USB that does not work.

Its a blind view to say I am an amateur so I should not expect it to work
properly - I paid a lot of hard earned cash - if it had been home electronics
item I would have returned it long ago - depending on how my issues are
resolved I may yet be returning it! Id be returning it regardless of it its
flex or icom/yae/kenw.

Minor miracle - hardly - if I had it out the box and all the features working I
maybe thinking and informing others that yes its a good buy - At the moment -
expensive paperweight.

Am I alone in that view - No - I know others are also stuck - a colleague also
bought a Flex at the same time as me - has his experience been the same - yes
indeed it has.

I dont have a blinkered view - I bought a commerical bit of kit - expensive at
that - I expect a working product soon- or else Flex will be minus one customer
and I am quite sure with the number of 1500 owners I wont be the only one.

Is Flex all I would like, no.
We were told 2.x would be ready in January 2010, it was not.
We have been told it will be ready when it's ready, not words that sound
customer friendly.
There have been problems with CW keying.
HOWEVER
no company is even close to their customer service. I would bet you could not
get the CEO of Icom, Yaesu, Kenwood to answer your questions.
You are amateurs, expect it to not be perfect. Flex is doing all it can to work
with you. Someone here said POS in referring to the 1500, I had some problems
but Flex helped me get it going. To me the 1500 is a minor miracle that
something that small can do so much.
Flex defines customer service. I cannot believe they are making money off of
hams.

My first Flex was serial number 25, 1watt QRP, what a blast. I've seen
the software change from a 1906 model T, to our current Ferrari. Sold
the 1000 to buy the 5000A, been running it since they first came out,
problems = ZERO. I live on the edge running SVN software new almost
everyday, do I have a problem or 2, yes but it is fun. If I find a
problem I can't live with for a day or two, I drop back to an older version.
Would I buy another, YES, I have a 1500 on order and you will hear it on

Re: [Flexradio] TX Audio Quality Help, please!

2008-07-10 Thread Jerry Harley
You all keep talking like there is a problem with the radio. I DON'T
THINK SO. I've talked to a lot of them and they all sound in verying
degrees of good. Some people have taken the time to use sound boards to
feed the radio and $$$ mics and other use what ever they have straight
in the front.
Now if you take the Eq. and crank up the lows you can sound Muddy, crank
the High and sound like a Tinwood. In my humble opinion, most of these
people with problems have RF getting into there radio. My OFD on 40m
introduces a little on my signal, but the Carolina with a vertical
radiator and Isolator doesn't. Now if I add a Kilowatt, you can through
the OFD away. When people have problems like what I'm hearing, the
first question I have is? what antenna and what power level.
Now I can go back and become just a reflector reader and Flex 5000A
operator, Available any time to test. Just email me WA2TTI Jerry

 Subject: [Flexradio] Flex 5000

I have been having this problem all along. I use
 VOX mostly but have
seen this on PPT also. When the Flex 5000 returns
 to receive I don't
always here a signal. I have to key the Tx and then
 it returns to
receive. This is very repeatable, about one in 10
 times when using
VOX. I'll have to try with PPT. Is this my TX/RX
 relay or a software
 problem. Jerry

[Flexradio] Installation of the 5000a

2007-11-27 Thread Jerry Harley
I got mine a few weeks back and keep track of the installation time, 45
minutes. I had preread the quick start but installed nothing.
So I started reading and doing and 45 minutes later I was up and running
on defaults, 15 minutes later and I had changed the; buffer setting, new
vox setting, mic profiles 6, turn on VAC for digi modes. Its so easy
even an electrical engineer can do. I only go back to the 1000 for one
thing QRPp I'm waiting to be able to turn the 5000 down to milli
watts. I've worked all of New England on 10mw on 60m. Jerry

[Flexradio] Computer horse power required to operate a 5000

2007-11-20 Thread Jerry Harley
I've watched a lot of conjecture on what is required, well here is what
I've found
My computer is a Compaq EVO 2.4 ( 5/6 years old)with only 760mb of ram,
XP home
It operates fine at 48000 and 512 (cpu35%) at 96000 and 512 (53%) I have
factions of a second dropouts.
It is possible to operate 96000 at 1024 but other computer activity will
cause dropouts

I can operate at 48000 and 512 and use a browser with minimal problems.
SDR will even operate with AVG doing a complete virus check.
I plan to put in another 512mb chip shortly and feel SDR is going to
perform fine with 1gb. I have no plans to operate a 192000. It will
operate there but it is pretty choppy.

The bottom line is your old 2.4 computer is going to work just fine with
the SDR 5000. Setup time was less than 1 hour but I've been running a
1000 for 3+ years. My first 1000 was number 25

[Flexradio] SDR 1000 For Sale

2007-08-22 Thread Jerry Harley
The SDR-1000™ from FlexRadio Systems is the hardware component of a
complete Software Defined Radio (SDR) transceiver interface to a Windows
Personal Computer. It was purchased April 2006 and still has 8 months on
the warranty. The covers have never been of the unit

It provides everything needed to convert a PC into a high performance,
11KHz-65MHz general coverage receiver with 160M-6M (2M optional) Amateur
Radio band transmit capability.

The SDR-1000™ delivers 100W PEP on the 160-10m (50W 60m)HF bands and
0.5W on 6 metres. (This package includes the SDR-100W PA linear stage.

I am suppling with this SDR-1000 the Delta 44 sound card, and breakout
box and all the cables to hook it up. I am also suppling the parallel
cable to connect the SDR-1000 to the PC.
Package price $12000. The reason I'm selling is because I have a 5000 on
order.

The FlexRadio SDR-1000™ is also the first open source software, amateur
radio transceiver to incorporate the scalable DSP performance of a
personal computer (PC) and sound card to perform all modulation,
demodulation, and control functions of the radio. The general purpose PC
architecture now vastly outperforms even the best proprietary DSP chips,
with cost/performance constantly improving. In addition, the
professional audio market is driving significant improvements in sound
card technology. The SDR-1000™ takes advantage of these trends to
provide upgradeable hardware and software performance…the TT3O IMD .

The SDR-1000™ incorporates a novel Quadrature Sampling Detector (QSD) to
provide high dynamic range with minimal components.

An Analog Devices AD9854 quadrature DDS and 200MHz 1ps jitter clock
oscillator provides continuous coverage with very low phase noise.

The combination of the QSD and DSP digital signal processing produces a
transceiver that has superior performance over conventional radios and
easily upgraded with new software features provided at no additional
cost. Receiver dynamic range and selectivity are in the top performance
class of all amateur radio transceivers.

[Flexradio] Opps - price correction on the SDR-1000

Package price $1200.

I have had my SDR-1000 for about 6 months now and I am very happy with it
for the most part. After all is said and done the only criticism that I
really have of the rig is the performance of the Compressor. What is this
function actually? I have tried all versions of the Power SDR software and
I just can't seem to get the compression performance that I am used to with
my conventional transceivers. If I increase the level of compression to
where I approach the level of average power that I am used to, the audio is
not clear but muffled. The unprocessed audio with the SDR has been
exceptional but the only way I can get the rig to approach the punch and
talk power of my other rigs is to use my Ten-Tec 234 speech processor with
the SDR. Using the external unit my audio is indistinguishable from a
FT-1000D or TS-870 both using 10db of compression. I just cannot duplicate
this with the software. I wonder if the guys at Flex realize that the
processing is lacking? If not it may

never improve. If so I'll wait patiently for an improvement.

So its a Big Horse Small Horse problem. If you want the same amount of

[Flexradio] What compter do I need?

2007-01-17 Thread Jerry Harley
I've watched a lot of talk about what people are running but they didn't
give enough details to be useful for others.
I have a modest system at best, Compaq EVO D310, Pentium(R) 4 cpu 2,4ghz
with 760mb of ram, M-Audio D44 sound card.
Audio buffer 512, DSP buffer 512
With Panadapter my cpu usage is 9.4 -28
With Histogram my cpu usage is 35 - 45
Only with Histogram do I ever detect and little audio dropout

I almost always have the Panadapter display up, and I surf the internet,
do email, and other things, while talking on a net, and only rarely do I
have any audio dropout (and I mean milliseconds). I hope this is useful
to some of you. The buffer size has a lot to do with it, 1024 is just
fine also. I can't decide if I can detect the difference.

[Flexradio] Tortoise page need updating

2006-08-23 Thread Jerry Harley
I finally got around to loading Tortoise and running it. Very easy with
the instructions, but now your hanging a little. You need to know that
you have to go toYOUR_DIR/TRUNK/BIN/RELEASE in order to run the
current executable.

This wouldn't have happen but it didn't like the URL
.../trunk/bin/release. So I down loaded everything. Therefore working
my way through the directories, top down, I found 1.6.2 and ran this -
svn555 hum mm not what I wanted, no new features. Bottom line, tell
us to go to TRUNK/BIN/RELEASE

Still exploring the new console, very very good. I'm finding the things
the have been talked about for the past weeks. Having SR (Spur
reduction) in easy reach is very nice for me. I use 10m a lot and
sometimes you need SR on and other times you need if off. So far I
haven't found a spur that I could not get rid of. This is really a non
issue that got a lot of press.

I hope this gets a few more people to jump in a join the daily fun.

 Scott,

As an experiment, I just tried your settings after calibrating with my
 XG-1.
Selected filter on LSB 2.7 KHz @ 7.200 MHz into a dummy load.
Firebox (upgraded with bug riddled firmware) @ 96 KHz sampling rate
Using Panadapter with averaging turned on.

 I get:

Pre amp off: -112 dBm, RX Signal = S6
Pre amp low: -120 dBm, RX Signal = almost S5
Pre amp med: -122 dBm, RX Signal = S4
Pre amp high: -132 dBm, RX Signal = S2

If I leave the preamp on high and select CWL with a 50 Hz filter:
Pre amp high: -136 dBm, RX Signal = S meter barely moves

 Hello Scott,

 the indicated level depends on:
 1.) preamp setting
2.) whether you are reading the Level-Meter or the

 Panadapter-line-level

 3.) the selected filter
and of corse if you did the calibration properly.
Slight diferences may occure on different bands.

My readings with antenna disconnected on 14.250kcs and 500Hz cw are:

on RX-Meter: on
 Panadapter:

 preamp high: ~ -142dBm ~
 -153dBm
 med ~ -133dBm

 ~

 -
 143dBm
  low ~ - 124dBm
   ~ -135dBm
  off ~ - 114dBm
   ~ -125dBm

As you can see I never reach the -104dBm Level. I get 104dBm Meter-
 reading
when the preamp is off and the filter is set 3.3kHz.
Hope I could help with this.

Eric Wachsmann - FlexRadio wrote:

Gary,

I never said splattering. Just overpowered (meaning higher peaks than
100W).

Given your experience and several others, we are in the process of
taking a better look at the power situation. Here are a few things we
have agreed upon:

1. The typical wattmeter (even those costing $5k) cannot read peak power
nearly as accurately as our ALC. The ALC can detect a peak in a single
sample (1/48000 of a second ... ~21us).

2. Based on #1, it is reasonable to expect that our ALC can adjust peaks
much more quickly (roughly 48 samples or 1ms) than its analog
counterpart. This results in a much quicker adaptation to the ALC limit
with less overshoot.

The bottom line of this is that we can go one of two ways. We can
either try to redefine what 100W is in terms of perfect linear sideband
modulation with ALC that is limiting peaks to 100W (+ ~30W), thus
bringing the average power much lower than is generally accepted with
traditional rigs. _OR_ we can redefine 100W for our rig to match the
more common output of others.

I will say with all candor that what we have been doing to this point
(starting with Preview 13 and working ALC) is the former. Going
forward, we plan to take measurements on our PA to determine whether the
latter is feasible. We will have more information about these possible
changes soon.

Eric: I understand all that. Here's the result of an actual

experiment I

did this morning. I admit it is just one sample. Take the result
accordingly.

I tried 5 successive times to break through to CT3MD on Porto Santo

Island

on 20 meters with Preview 14. The external wattmeter showed no more

than

45 watts peak. I switched to Preview 12 and set all the controls to

be

the same, then tried again. I broke through the pileup on the first

try

with a 59 report. The external wattmeter showed 100 watts peak.

I gather that you are saying I am overdriving my PA in the latter

case,

but not in the former. Other than that, you imply that I may be
splattering as well. The report didn't indicate that.

Comments?

Gary,

After I got this message, I went back and took my measurements again
using a scope. I am seeing peak power up to ~140W with the AVG

power

around 45W depending on voice characteristics. This is what we were
targeting with the new ALC.

Why should you be happy with this? Because it is an extremely

linear

ALC that allows you to over drive the heck out of the input without
having to worry about damaging your transmitter, and without

splattering

all over the band.

I read the release notes and, yes, I experience exactly what was

// Note that because the ALC was non-functional
// in the last series of releases (since 1.4.5 started),
// the output power for inputs which are being overdriven
// will be attenuated. As a reminder, on SSB, you will
// not get 100W on a bird wattmeter. Something closer to
// 30 or 40W is a more reasonable expectation for average
// power for most voices/microphones.

Now, would someone please explain to me why I still see 100+ watts

on

the

peak power meter of the SDR while the external wattmeter peak

power

reads

about half that? Also, please tell me why I should be happy with

half

the

power I used to put out. I assume the answer will be something

like

you

were overdriving and distorted before, now you are not. The

it to hard. Oh, power 96, mic 40, internal menu mic 50. Should I be
able to change the buffer to other than 2048 on the audio section? I
can't, I hear nothing

[Flexradio] 60m power

2006-01-31 Thread Jerry Harley
My reported problem with 60m power out adjustment has gone away. This
is not the first time that the first time i bring up a new beta after
having just installing it that there is something not working just
right. Now that my beta 12 has been run several times I find that
everything is working quite normally, although I don't agree with the
peak power output reading. Jerry wa2tti

I still have a problem of putting my name in teamspeak
