And its not just CW that was broken ... I read the sales blurb again on Waters and Stanton site last night to reconfirm what I purchased and there are many functions broken or not working or still being developed that are in the sales - the sales reads more like a wish list than actual live features. Do I expect it to be perfect - no Do I expect it to be 99% - yes I paid a significant amount of money for my flex 1500 - this isnt a home built kit, or group of amateurs working in their spare time, this is a commercial sale, selling in major magazines, selling a product that is not (IMHO) working I bought the flex1500 on good faith knowing that a full release in work - yes they have had issues around a USB driver but what worries me is the vast amount of stuff not related to USB that does not work. Its a blind view to say I am an amateur so I should not expect it to work properly - I paid a lot of hard earned cash - if it had been home electronics item I would have returned it long ago - depending on how my issues are resolved I may yet be returning it! Id be returning it regardless of it its flex or icom/yae/kenw. Minor miracle - hardly - if I had it out the box and all the features working I maybe thinking and informing others that yes its a good buy - At the moment - expensive paperweight. Am I alone in that view - No - I know others are also stuck - a colleague also bought a Flex at the same time as me - has his experience been the same - yes indeed it has. I dont have a blinkered view - I bought a commerical bit of kit - expensive at that - I expect a working product soon- or else Flex will be minus one customer and I am quite sure with the number of 1500 owners I wont be the only one. Re: [Flexradio] TX Audio Quality Help, please!
You all keep talking like there is a problem with the radio. I DON'T THINK SO. I've talked to a lot of them and they all sound in verying degrees of good. Some people have taken the time to use sound boards to feed the radio and $$$ mics and other use what ever they have straight in the front. Now if you take the Eq. and crank up the lows you can sound Muddy, crank the High and sound like a Tinwood. In my humble opinion, most of these people with problems have RF getting into there radio. My OFD on 40m introduces a little on my signal, but the Carolina with a vertical radiator and Isolator doesn't. Now if I add a Kilowatt, you can through the OFD away. When people have problems like what I'm hearing, the first question I have is? what antenna and what power level. Now I can go back and become just a reflector reader and Flex 5000A operator, Available any time to test. [Flexradio] Installation of the 5000a
I got mine a few weeks back and keep track of the installation time, 45 minutes. I had preread the quick start but installed nothing. So I started reading and doing and 45 minutes later I was up and running on defaults, 15 minutes later and I had changed the; buffer setting, new vox setting, mic profiles 6, turn on VAC for digi modes. Its so easy even an electrical engineer can do. I only go back to the 1000 for one thing QRPp I'm waiting to be able to turn the 5000 down to milli watts. [Flexradio] Computer horse power required to operate a 5000
I've watched a lot of conjecture on what is required, well here is what I've found My computer is a Compaq EVO 2.4 ( 5/6 years old)with only 760mb of ram, XP home It operates fine at 48000 and 512 (cpu35%) at 96000 and 512 (53%) I have factions of a second dropouts. It is possible to operate 96000 at 1024 but other computer activity will cause dropouts I can operate at 48000 and 512 and use a browser with minimal problems. SDR will even operate with AVG doing a complete virus check. I plan to put in another 512mb chip shortly and feel SDR is going to perform fine with 1gb. I have no plans to operate a 192000. It will operate there but it is pretty choppy. The bottom line is your old 2.4 computer is going to work just fine with the SDR 5000. Setup time was less than 1 hour but I've been running a 1000 for 3+ years. After all is said and done the only criticism that I really have of the rig is the performance of the Compressor. What is this function actually? I have tried all versions of the Power SDR software and I just can't seem to get the compression performance that I am used to with my conventional transceivers. If I increase the level of compression to where I approach the level of average power that I am used to, the audio is not clear but muffled. The unprocessed audio with the SDR has been exceptional but the only way I can get the rig to approach the punch and talk power of my other rigs is to use my Ten-Tec 234 speech processor with the SDR. Using the external unit my audio is indistinguishable from a FT-1000D or TS-870 both using 10db of compression. I just cannot duplicate this with the software. I wonder if the guys at Flex realize that the processing is lacking? If not it may never improve. If so I'll wait patiently for an improvement. I did a PA calibrate and the number were 8 to 10 lower ie 160 was 48.6 now 38.5. I went about half way through and quit. This is not inline with any previous calibration. Remember This all started with relays clicking in the SDR and low power out, then SDR running very slow and really not working. I remove the jumper cable from the stack to the PA and tested it. I don't know how to look at this further. I'm still getting OS back to current, service pak 2 is currently installing.Jerry wa2tti 2.4P, 768mb
[Flexradio] Strange problem with Audigy 2ZS
I tried to remove and reload my Audigy 2 ZS card software and have the following problem. With software reloaded, and ASIO v1.8 reloaded, computer rebooted every step of the way. The Audigy 2ZS demo works, plays CD's, but when I bring up SDR 1.4.5 P15 (or others) my cpu is at 90+, the audio is slow and buzzy, I reviewed things with Eric. I'm out of ideas. Tim Ellison wrote: OK, it may be the internal control cable that goes to the PA. It might not be seated well. If that doesn't do it, I'd give Gerald a call. Parallel cable, PA, RFE, no tuner The problem does not happen when the PA is not select and I'm running QRP Well, I reseated the control cable and the RF cable and now I have 0 output power. This SDR was in this past Summer for the PA to be put in and had 6 hours of labor charged against for ECO's. Before this the 200mhz oscillator was bad. [Flexradio] Problem report
I'm getting relay clicking after about 1 second of going into tune. Power drops 5watts or less and relay chatter continues. I've plugged and unplugged and tested different version of software 1.4.4 1.4.5 P15 and the same thing happens. Just today I was finding the Tx going into echo and it was in echo when it returned to Rx. I been turning software off and then back on to cure this. Not sure if this is related I thought this was related to Mic drive or Compansion. Jerry Wa2tti P2.4 Audigy 2ZS
[Flexradio] QRPp test
I turn off the PA this morning and ran QRPp this morning on 60m. No problem working the NorthEast at 750mw from Philly area. I was heard from a NY and VT stations at 10mw, Yes 10mw. Both my personal Palomar LED meter and the SDR are unable to go or read lower than 10mw. Good communication can be held a 25mw. Jerry Wa2tti PS The antenna is a 40m trapped for 60m inverted V at 55 feet.
[Flexradio] SDR 1.4.5 P15
I find that I can nolonger set; audio setuo, sound card, buffer size to anything but 2048. When I do I get nothing. I saw this before and then after a few days I was able to adjust it again?! Also the Monitor Tx AF has no effect on the audio. There is barely enough aduio to monitor your self. Jerry wa2tti CPU 2.4 Audigy 2zs cpu usage avg 20%

With the new Docs coming in at 150 plus pages, is there a way we can print just the new pages? The last docs life tested my old bubble jet printer. Now that I'm retired I no longer have access to that high speed laser printer. Jerry wa2tti

Re: [Flexradio] PowerSDR Beta Preview 13 has been Released.
Eric Wachsmann - FlexRadio wrote: Gary, I never said splattering. Just overpowered (meaning higher peaks than 100W). Given your experience and several others, we are in the process of taking a better look at the power situation. Here are a few things we have agreed upon: 1. The typical wattmeter (even those costing $5k) cannot read peak power nearly as accurately as our ALC. The ALC can detect a peak in a single sample (1/48000 of a second ... ~21us). 2. Based on #1, it is reasonable to expect that our ALC can adjust peaks much more quickly (roughly 48 samples or 1ms) than its analog counterpart. This results in a much quicker adaptation to the ALC limit with less overshoot. The bottom line of this is that we can go one of two ways. We can either try to redefine what 100W is in terms of perfect linear sideband modulation with ALC that is limiting peaks to 100W (+ ~30W), thus bringing the average power much lower than is generally accepted with traditional rigs. _OR_ we can redefine 100W for our rig to match the more common output of others. I will say with all candor that what we have been doing to this point (starting with Preview 13 and working ALC) is the former. Going forward, we plan to take measurements on our PA to determine whether the latter is feasible. We will have more information about these possible changes soon. Eric: I understand all that. Here's the result of an actual experiment I did this morning. I admit it is just one sample. Take the result accordingly. I tried 5 successive times to break through to CT3MD on Porto Santo Island on 20 meters with Preview 14. The external wattmeter showed no more than 45 watts peak. I switched to Preview 12 and set all the controls to be the same, then tried again. I broke through the pileup on the first try with a 59 report. The external wattmeter showed 100 watts peak. I gather that you are saying I am overdriving my PA in the latter case, but not in the former. Other than that, you imply that I may be splattering as well. The report didn't indicate that. Comments? Gary -- Original message -- From: Eric Wachsmann - FlexRadio [EMAIL PROTECTED] Gary, After I got this message, I went back and took my measurements again using a scope. I am seeing peak power up to ~140W with the AVG power around 45W depending on voice characteristics. This is what we were targeting with the new ALC. Why should you be happy with this? Because it is an extremely linear ALC that allows you to over drive the heck out of the input without having to worry about damaging your transmitter, and without splattering all over the band. I read the release notes and, yes, I experience exactly what was described: // Note that because the ALC was non-functional // in the last series of releases (since 1.4.5 started), // the output power for inputs which are being overdriven // will be attenuated. As a reminder, on SSB, you will // not get 100W on a bird wattmeter. Something closer to // 30 or 40W is a more reasonable expectation for average // power for most voices/microphones. Now, would someone please explain to me why I still see 100+ watts on the peak power meter of the SDR while the external wattmeter peak power reads about half that? Also, please tell me why I should be happy with half the power I used to put out. I assume the answer will be something like you were overdriving and distorted before, now you are not. The signal reports I got were nothing like that, I might add. Sorry to pose questions which may be obvious to most, but I really would like to know. My experience with High SWR and funny high power, and dropouts was all caused by the parallel cable connection. My reported problem with 60m power out adjustment has gone away. Now that my beta 12 has been run several times I find that everything is working quite normally, although I don't agree with the peak power output reading.
