Re: [Flexradio] New PCs now sold with Vista and not XP -Implicationsfor SDR-1000?

2007-03-08 Thread John Merrill
I personally have found that one OS doesn't work any better than another.
They all crash at one time or another. The only difference is spyware and
viruses. YMMV. That being said, I like OSX the best.

I wonder what's different about Windows XP Media Center versus regular XP? I
thought it was basically all the extra junk they supplied with Media Center.

A: At this time, no M-Audio device drivers are supported under Windows
XP Media Center Edition (WMCE). This means that any M-Audio device
designed to interface with your computer via USB, FireWire, or PCI/PCI-X
is not supported for use with WMCE. Additionally, M-Audio USB devices
designed to function without installing a driver (aka class compliant
devices) are also not currently supported under WMCE.

Several people have kindly offered advice with respect to my previous
query about the use of duo core processors - I was concerned that such
 a
processor running at 1.88GHz would be a poorer option than a single
processor running at 3GHz. I'd have to say that the advice was a bit
conflicting but I think either would be OK - but make sure you have
  plenty of memory.

I was also advised by Flexradio to use Windows XP Pro or Home Edition,
  but to avoid XP Media.

So now a further question, for which I guess there is not yet an
answer, is what about Windows Vista?

I need to take the plunge and replace my computer, so any comments will
  be received most gratefully.

Toby:

I wouldn't be concerned with the first 2. I've never seen that on mine and
the third one I haven't noticed. It wouldn't be enough to bother me even on
rtty. Of course with any news group you only hear the few problems and not
about the thousands that are working just fine. This radio works ten times
better than an Orion, har har.

FWIW.I have decided to postpone purchasing an SDR 1K due to the following
reported problems. If I am in error please correct..

 1. On CW the rig goes out of phase periodically
 2. The power output can suddenly jump from 100 watts to 120 to 130 watts
 3. Frequency stability can vary from 15 to 25 hz while transmitting as the
 osc heats up (design Flaw?)

Otherwise the SDR 1k seems to be an excellent rig with great potential, but
any one of the above listed issues is a deal killer.

Does anyone know how the contesting.com lists do it? They are using Mailman.

Unfortunately, Mailman doesn't support searchable archives out of the
box. There are ways to do it (which the hpsdr folks must have figured
out) but it takes patching Mailman and using additional software. The
Mailman web site points you toward several ways of doing it, but doesn't
give an official blessed solution. The patching requirement is a real
concern, because that makes automated updates for, e.g., security
 issues, more difficult to manage.

I've looked into it for the tapr.org and febo.com mailing list archives
(which both use Mailman) and unfortunately it takes quite a bit more
 than just flipping it on.

I am sure the searchable feature is just a simple switch in the pipermail

Note these archieves are searchable. These people are

 this.

Re: [Flexradio] Sunday Net

Hank was there but tried at 14307 because of qrm and 313 was occupied. 14313
is known over the years as a snake pit, if you know what I mean. Used to
be the Maritime Mobile Net years ago until KV4FZ and his cronies drove them
to 14300. Pretty tough place to hold a net. Might be worthwhile to find a
different frequency.

Re: [Flexradio] Sunday Net

14.316 or 14.329 might be good ones. The ICOM net meets on 316 at 1700z and
I don't hear much activity on that frequency after the net is over. Tentec
net meets on 329 at 2130z. I don't think there any other nets on those
frequencies.
