Observations from a big cat wranglerfor me, the only thing more exciting
than working with one of our big cats here at BCFC, a 501(c)(3) non profit
feline sanctuary, is taking a break between tours to sneak off
and work 6 meters on my little Flex 1500! Now here's the big news: for
many of us who are unable to plunk down 6K for a 6000, the introduction of this
new radio may drive the Flex 5000 market down to the point where we may see,
for the first time, these great 5000's available on the used market as
flex-a-holics trade up. As I spoke to Tim at Flex yesterday, he communicated
to me that there may be a few used 5000's available directly through Flex,
under full warranty, at price points that we have never seen before. Not to
shabby!

I heard murmurings about the price of the 6700 on the floor at Dayton
yesterday, and expected this to appear on the reflector. I have to say
that I find the price on both the 6500 and the 6700 to be extremely
 fair.

What do I base this opinion on? Look at 6000 series pamphlet, and
Google the FPGAs that Flex are using; the Xlinx XC6VLX130T (used in
the 6700) cost, in single unit quantities, over $1200.00 USD!
FPGAs are complex, expensive, their yields are low and the price of
the development tools are not cheap. My company uses a suite that cost
 $40K USD per seat...

I'm sure that Flex is pricing both models as competitively as
possible, and is not using a prestige pricing model. I'm also sure
that, based on sales of 1500s and 3000s, they are well aware that many
people can't (or won't) pay $7K. This is why they are offering two
models, so as to compete in two price-to-performance arenas.

Personally, I most certainly do not want Flex to de-content the
6700 to make it more affordable. I want the performance advantages of
the 6700 and am willing to pay for it.

just my own opinion since we all live in very bad economy if the price
of $7k or any in this area it is very high make me wonder how many
people will buy black box for $7k or 7.000 euro or more , ?
the price to add for update is make it high as well but not for all of
us , I will say if the price is $2100 or in this area I will say
update of $300 OR 300 WILL WORK GREAT FOR EVERY ONE this for a year
.flex will make more mony by doing it .since they will sale more and
 get more .
yes it cost money nothing is for free and I am sure flex will have 0
bug on since you pay for it no ??
flex keep the price down so every one will have this new 6700 and
enjoy it I hope they will vy 73 E.P g0uut/dl9fcc

Yes you should reduce power. It's my experience that you can damage the PA's
in the Flex 1500 for sure! Also operating in digital modes you may even
spike you're output on the Flex 1500 and damage or wipe out the output
modules in you amplifier.( THP Model HL-45B my station) I run around 35 to
40% output at the most on my Flex 1500 for digital. My two cents worth good

With powerSDR and computer turned off, just your speakers plugged into
the powered up Flex-1500? My best guess it is the speaker system/audio

seat perfectly and will make some funny noises from time to time.

Could be something else too fer sure.

This is a known issue if PowerSDR is not shut down properly which
doesn't allow it to completely write out the memory database.

If you leave PowerSDR running and Microsoft does an automatic update
that requires a reboot of your PC and a forced close of all open
applications, then the memory file gets corrupted. This can happen if
something happens that makes PowerSDR throw an exception error.

There is some relief on the way. There are some fixes and enhancements
for this issue planned for the next release of PowerSDR. And before
everyone asks, I do not have an ETA on when that release will be available.

In the mean time, there is a little standalone Memory database manager
applet that will manually allow the user to create three sequential
backups of the memory.xml file for archive and recovery purposes. In
addition to creating memory database backups, you can restore a
previously backed up memory database as the actual memory database,
display the state of the backed up memory files and delete memory file
back ups too.

You need to log on to the PC as the same user that you log on with when
using the SDR and run it from the same drive that PowerSDR is installed
on. You can get the applet here:

Hooked it up to the Flex 1500 with (band change) cable. Turned it on and

OK Leo..

The HL-45B is specifically designed for the Yaesu FT-817...While other
transceivers are OK for use.manual band switching only.. PROVIDED you have
an ALC connection as shown on page 5 in the manual.. Unfortunately the FLEX
has NO ALC.so you are basically running the amplifier with no spike
protection..

Most likely you have blown the finals... Refer to the warranty card included
in the box from HRO.. AVSL the repair center, is located in Virginia Beach,
VA...

Note:. Customers who use the Flex 1500 have a failure rate 3-4 times more
than customers who use the HL-45B with the FT-817, which the amp was
designed for..

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 1500 using External Transmitter for AM

2012-01-02 Thread Rick Tharrington
Flex 1500 using External Transmitter

For AM operation I'm using my Yaesu FT-102 to xmit with and receive with the
Flex 1500 with a lot wider AM filter selection. Anyone have any additional
feedback?
Here's what I'm doing...

First I turn off in PowerSDR xmit in set up, and make it a receive only.
Use the external receiver antenna function on the FT-102. (antenna switching
relay inside the 102 using same ant.).
Use the ACC-1 jack on the FT-102 to open up the audio output on the Flex.
(audio mute)
Seems to be working fine for past 3 weeks.
Got a nice tube AM transmitter and a great SDR AM receiver!

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 1500 using External Transmitter for AM

2012-01-02 Thread Rick Tharrington
I have you to know that NC4L MALCOLM EISELMAN in Hollywood FL has been thru
and rebuilt my FT-102 and has done hundreds of FT-102's. I check into many
40 meter and 75 meter AM heavy metal frequencies, and get GREAT reports with
my FT-102 from all those AM connoisseurs. 45 to 50 watts carrier and 130
watts forward modulator.
Just Its nice to be able to bust thru the QRN and have a wider AM filter
selection with a SDR radio.

Brian,

You are obviously not familiar with the FT-102. A properly modified FT-102
can sound excellent on AM. There is nothing wrong with the old tube rigs you
mention. But, they all need modifications to make them sound good on AM. The
fact that a transmitter uses high level plate modulation doesn't guarantee
that it sounds good. In fact, most of the 100W class AM transmitters from
the 50's and 60's sound terrible until they are modified. Most of them had
restricted audio bandwidth and horrible things like clippers and high/low
pass audio filters.

My 2 cents...

73,
Bill - W1MPY

Yes. The FT-102 is not really a great AM transmitter. It is an solid-state
SSB transceiver with a tube driver and tube PA but it is in no-way a tube
transmitter as virtually all the work is done by transistors at low levels.
If you want that classical tube broadcast sound you need an all-tube
transmitter with high-level modulation. That means screen grid modulation
(OK) or plate modulation (best).

So try looking around at boat anchors. There were a lot of near-100W AM
transmitters made in the '50s and early '60s. Many were billed as novice
rigs and could be modified to be driven by your 1500 rather than by the
built-in crystal oscillator or VFO. Now it will provide more power from
your 1500 but it will also allow you to do high-level modulation. Just let
the 1500 provide the carrier and use the external transmitter's modulator.

Someone was talking about modifying the DX-60 to be a PA for the 1500. This
is an excellent solution as it will allow the 1500 to deliver about 50W PEP
output but you can use the screen modulation of the 6146 in the DX-60 to
produce AM.

 Gentlemen,

I must admit that I don't understand any of this. With the bands as

1950's copies of QST and see just why we decided to use single sideband in
the first place. Now we watch movies on a 4 inch screen with often
non-descript earbuds and wonder if I have wasted my money on these speaker
systems with close to 200 drivers and with a screen that allows me to see
Aaron Rogers at much larger than full size. I think Yul said it best
when
 he commented T'is a puzzlement!

To me also. I cannot imagine why someone would run AM at all because one
can do precisely the same thing using SSB at 1/8 the power and 1/2 the
bandwidth. But I was treating the question as a technical discussion.
Understanding the production of a good AM signal is interesting even if I
cannot imagine why anyone would bother. The last time I was concerned with
producing a good AM signal I was in Junior High School and playing on the
CB band with my friends. Yes, I modified an AM ham transmitter with
high-level modulation so I could have a good 50W signal. Now? No so much.

But that doesn't mean that others aren't interested in producing a high
quality AM signal. Like I said, it is a technical challenge.

And I admit to playing with vacuum-tube audio and steam engines for fun as
well. Who's to say?

to listen to an analog radio for a long period of time. The background
noise is tiring. For the first day I ran the house Yaesu FT 1000 and
stacked TH7's, then I switched to the Flex 1500. Setting the bandwidth
to 1.8kc allowed me to work the pile-ups easier than ever before. I also
ran the preamp from off to +30, and twice I talked the band out, working
three JA's then an LU off the back until there was nothing more to be
heard (10m).

I may have run the Flex 1500 for 1/3 of my almost 1500 contacts, more
than I've ever done before. P40GH

Actually, there's an addon to HRD's logbook, called HRD Utilities which
automates the LOTW process, both uploading and downloading. After every
major session, I just click the icon and it looks at the log, finds all the
Qs which have not yet been uploaded, does the encryption/signing, and
uploads to LOTW. All I have to do is type in my LOTW password. Another
button downloads all confirmations received since the last time, and updates
the log entries to indicate that a LOTW QSL was received so that the award
tracking screens are correct. I've been using this for a few years now. I
use MiniDeluxe with HRDLog and DM780. If you do PTT by COM port RTS, it
doesn't have the problems of PTT via CAT. I especially like the HRDLog
feature where you select a bunch of Qs, hit LookupGoogleEarth, and it plots
those QSOs on the Earth globe. Works very well.

HRD doesn't do contesting well, so for that I use N1MM and export contest
logs in ADIF, then upload them into HRDLog (and from there they get to
LOTW).

I installed v2.0.22 an hour ago and have been playing around with it on
160 meters and on 6 meters. It went in very smoothly and it's all
working great. Upgrading from v2.0.20RC2 is easy, and the installation
program installs new firmware (for the Flex 5K anyway). No issues
importing categories with Ray's utility, so the whole upgrade took about
5 minutes to accomplish. It still won't make my coffee the way I like
it, but it's doing everything else perfectly!

Having just purchased a 1500, I am starting to agree with you Ron. my 756
pro II has a scope, but it's not near what the Flex is. Once you get use
to using a mouse and a few key's the Flex is really easy to use. Most guys

talk about not like a SDR because they miss knobs, but I must say I got
over that in about 5 mins of using the Flex. Not sure if I will spend the
bigger dollars for a 5000 or 3000, the 1500 does a lot, and I connected to

my AL-811H amp, now getting 100watts more or less depending on the band,
makes the 1500 really useful. Life is to short for QRP.

At 5 watts it probably doesn't matter, but it would be nice to have the ATU

Dear Customers,

On February 18th, we posted the PowerSDR v2.0.19 RC1 Release Candidate.
Please see the definition of a Release Candidate is provide below for
reference.

We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from so many customers who
were pleased with the new CW keyer and the ease of upgrade. Given that
there have been over 6,400 downloads to date, the number of reported bugs
are minimal. We have already fixed a number of the more important ones and
have two remaining known issues that we plan to fix before going to a
general availability (GA) release.

The two remaining issues we are working are as follows:

   1. Some, but not all FLEX-5000 customers are experiencing random and
intermittent TR or tuning receiver drop out. This is a firmware control
timing problem that I previously reported on the reflectors. This
problem
does not exist in the 1.18.6 official release and appears to be timing
related on some specific PC/FLEX-5000 combinations. This problem is
being
actively worked by the engineering team.
   2. We have identified a potential cause of ALC overshoot in the DSP
software and are working on a solution. This is mainly an issue for
customers running legal limit amplifiers that require drive levels below
full power (e.g. 50W or so) of the radio.

We will keep you informed when we have resolved these remaining issues.

Best 73s,
Gerald

I'm here to tell you what a difference 2.0.19 Software made! Not just CW but
the NB and the ANF I notice a improvement
on my end right away. Just everything was pretty munch flawless for my
operating purposes.
I have been running a lot of soundcard modes, along with JT65 on HF and
working a lot of DX with just 5 watts! I'm having some much fun with this
little Flex 1500 rig. Discovering something new in ham radio SDR radios
along with the world of QRP. Just what I needed something to breathe new
life into my ham radio hobby!
Thanks to all that got 2.0.19 Software up and running, and thanks to Flex
for making a great little rig that's so affordable and within reach of most
everybody's budget. I thank If most hams were to look at the Flex 1500 you
have to agree for the cost you would be hard pressed to find any other radio
that has so much bang for the buck! Thanks Flex:)

BPSK31 and RTTY. The bands of choice are 20,30,and 40 meters. If I can hear
them I can wk them state side and DX. Antenna T-6 LPA 20 up and a Mosley
RV-4C 1/4 ground mounted vertical with 25 redials.

I have a 50w brick it's sent off for repairs. Hell I might just sale the
thing when comes back I'm having so much fun QRP!

Rick,

Install PowerSDR v2.0.16. It will re-install the drivers along with giving
you a more improved version of PowerSDR than 2.0.8

I run a THP HL-45B about 50 watts pep on 40 meters! It's a nice clean little
amp. I tried a RM amp really nasty THD up and down the band spurs.
Anyone know of another THP amp that 5 watts will give you 200 watts or more
out the back?

[Flexradio] Flex - 1500 loss of output on 40 and 60 meters only?

2010-08-15 Thread Rick Tharrington

Has anybody had this to happen there Flex -1500...

I noticed I could not get anyone to answer me on the 40 and 60 meter bands.
The flex says its putting out 5 watts in the tune position but when you
monitor it with other rigs It sounds like it's putting out milliwatts of
power on 40 60 meters.
On all the on all the other bands it goes full scale on my ft-920 my Ten Tec
ect listening to them on the same frequency with no antenna! Is there
something I can do on my end? Or something I'm not doing? By way I have LDG
AT 100 pro and it's set on the 12 watt scale it shows nothing out on 40 and
60 meters. On all other bands it shows in the tune mode 5 watts right on the
money. I don't think this is software?

[Flexradio] Ref Flex 1500 VOX

I'm using GM-5 mic on the DX element. I have been in the setup and turned It
on. I have FLEX 1500 manual and been thru the VOX sections so what have I
looked over?

I'm getting ready to buy a brick, I have been told the best little brick to
complement the little Flex 1500 is the Tokyo High Power model HL45B amp 5 in
about 50 pep out. Any feedback from the group on my questions.

[Flexradio] Ref Flex 1500 adding Amp

2010-08-08 Thread Rick Tharrington

I'm going to buy the Tokyo High Power amp model HL-45B this week. Now will I
need a buffer box Like the ERB-1 below? I have all ready made up a cable
for the Flex Wire port. I understand the two pin outs to key a amp are 5 and
4. Now can I use those leads direct to the HL-45B or key thru a buffer? Any
comments or thoughts from the group?

Rick KD4JRX

ERB-1 External Linear Relay Box

The ERB-1 is an External Linear Relay Box designed to be an interface
between your HF Radio and Linear Amplifier. The ERB-1 uses RCA Phono jacks
so it can be connected to many popular radios by simply using RCA to RCA
cables.

It also can be used for any other switching applications you may have.
Refer to specifications.

Compatibility
When properly connected the ERB-1 will work with virtually any Linear or
Radio combination. For some Radio and Linears, two RCA to RCA cables(Sold
Seperately) are all that is needed.

 It is also QSK compatible.

Power
It can be powered by an optional 9 volt battery or power cube.

Why do I need a Relay buffer between my Amplifier and Radio?
When connecting different brands of Radios and Amplifiers, there may be
switching voltage, polarity, and current capability issues that can cause
damage to your radio or amplifier if connected without a switching buffer
between them. Even if your internal radio switching looks like it should be
usable, it is alway nice to have an extra degree of isolation between your
amplifier and radio.

Reliability
All inputs an outputs are protected making the ERB-1 extremely Rugged
and Reliable.

Specifications:
PTT INPUT CURRENT: 8MA SINK CURRENT
VCC IN: 5 TO 18...@10ma
RELAY OUT: 2...@250ma MAX
