Good Point Jim also drive down the Flex 3000's:). I still have a lot fun with my Flex 1500. Worked and a nice rig chew with Ed VP9CE (fm72) last night on 6 meters. 5/9+ at times. Now here's the big news: for many of us who are unable to plunk down 6K for a 6000, the introduction of this new radio may drive the Flex 5000 market down to the point where we may see, for the first time, these great 5000's available on the used market as flex-a-holics trade up. As I spoke to Tim at Flex yesterday, he communicated to me that there may be a few used 5000's available directly through Flex, under full warranty, at price points that we have never seen before. Not to shabby! I have to say that I find the price on both the 6500 and the 6700 to be extremely fair. What do I base this opinion on? Look at 6000 series pamphlet, and Google the FPGAs that Flex are using; the Xlinx XC6VLX130T (used in the 6700) cost, in single unit quantities, over $1200.00 USD! FPGAs are complex, expensive, their yields are low and the price of the development tools are not cheap. My company uses a suite that cost $40K USD per seat... I'm sure that Flex is pricing both models as competitively as possible, and is not using a prestige pricing model. I'm also sure that, based on sales of 1500s and 3000s, they are well aware that many people can't (or won't) pay $7K. This is why they are offering two models, so as to compete in two price-to-performance arenas. Personally, I most certainly do not want Flex to de-content the 6700 to make it more affordable. I want the performance advantages of the 6700 and am willing to pay for it. If you leave PowerSDR running and Microsoft does an automatic update that requires a reboot of your PC and a forced close of all open applications, then the memory file gets corrupted. This can happen if something happens that makes PowerSDR throw an exception error. There is some relief on the way. There are some fixes and enhancements for this issue planned for the next release of PowerSDR. And before everyone asks, I do not have an ETA on when that release will be available. In the mean time, there is a little standalone Memory database manager applet that will manually allow the user to create three sequential backups of the memory.xml file for archive and recovery purposes. In addition to creating memory database backups, you can restore a previously backed up memory database as the actual memory database, display the state of the backed up memory files and delete memory file back ups too. You need to log on to the PC as the same user that you log on with when using the SDR and run it from the same drive that PowerSDR is installed on. The fact that a transmitter uses high level plate modulation doesn't guarantee that it sounds good. In fact, most of the 100W class AM transmitters from the 50's and 60's sound terrible until they are modified. Anyone have any additional feedback? Yes. The FT-102 is not really a great AM transmitter. It is an solid-state SSB transceiver with a tube driver and tube PA but it is in no-way a tube transmitter as virtually all the work is done by transistors at low levels. If you want that classical tube broadcast sound you need an all-tube transmitter with high-level modulation. That means screen grid modulation (OK) or plate modulation (best). So try looking around at boat anchors. There were a lot of near-100W AM transmitters made in the '50s and early '60s. Many were billed as novice rigs and could be modified to be driven by your 1500 rather than by the built-in crystal oscillator or VFO. Now it will provide more power from your 1500 but it will also allow you to do high-level modulation. Just let the 1500 provide the carrier and use the external transmitter's modulator. Someone was talking about modifying the DX-60 to be a PA for the 1500. This is an excellent solution as it will allow the 1500 to deliver about 50W PEP output but you can use the screen modulation of the 6146 in the DX-60 to produce AM. -- Brian Lloyd, WB6RQN/J79BPL 3191 Western Dr. Cameron Park, CA 95682 br...@lloyd.com +1.767.617.1365 (Dominica) +1.916.877.5067 (USA) ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/ - No virus found in this message. Now we watch movies on a 4 inch screen with often non-descript earbuds and wonder if I have wasted my money on these speaker systems with close to 200 drivers and with a screen that allows me to see Aaron Rogers at much larger than full size. I think Yul said it best when he commented T'is a puzzlement! To me also. I cannot imagine why someone would run AM at all because one can do precisely the same thing using SSB at 1/8 the power and 1/2 the bandwidth. But I was treating the question as a technical discussion. Understanding the production of a good AM signal is interesting even if I cannot imagine why anyone would bother. The last time I was concerned with producing a good AM signal I was in Junior High School and playing on the CB band with my friends. Yes, I modified an AM ham transmitter with high-level modulation so I could have a good 50W signal. Now? No so much. But that doesn't mean that others aren't interested in producing a high quality AM signal. Like I said, it is a technical challenge. Most guys talk about not like a SDR because they miss knobs, but I must say I got over that in about 5 mins of using the Flex. Not sure if I will spend the bigger dollars for a 5000 or 3000, the 1500 does a lot, and I connected to my AL-811H amp, now getting 100watts more or less depending on the band, makes the 1500 really useful. Please see the definition of a Release Candidate is provide below for reference. We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from so many customers who were pleased with the new CW keyer and the ease of upgrade. Given that there have been over 6,400 downloads to date, the number of reported bugs are minimal. We have already fixed a number of the more important ones and have two remaining known issues that we plan to fix before going to a general availability (GA) release. The two remaining issues we are working are as follows: 1. Some, but not all FLEX-5000 customers are experiencing random and intermittent TR or tuning receiver drop out. This is a firmware control timing problem that I previously reported on the reflectors. This problem does not exist in the 1.18.6 official release and appears to be timing related on some specific PC/FLEX-5000 combinations. This problem is being actively worked by the engineering team. 2. We have identified a potential cause of ALC overshoot in the DSP software and are working on a solution. This is mainly an issue for customers running legal limit amplifiers that require drive levels below full power (e.g. 50W or so) of the radio. We will keep you informed when we have resolved these remaining issues. Just what I needed something to breathe new life into my ham radio hobby! Thanks to all that got 2.0.19 Software up and running, and thanks to Flex for making a great little rig that's so affordable and within reach of most everybody's budget. I understand the two pin outs to key a amp are 5 and 4. Now can I use those leads direct to the HL-45B or key thru a buffer? Any comments or thoughts from the group? Rick KD4JRX ERB-1 External Linear Relay Box The ERB-1 is an External Linear Relay Box designed to be an interface between your HF Radio and Linear Amplifier. The ERB-1 uses RCA Phono jacks so it can be connected to many popular radios by simply using RCA to RCA cables. It also can be used for any other switching applications you may have. Refer to specifications. Compatibility When properly connected the ERB-1 will work with virtually any Linear or Radio combination. For some Radio and Linears, two RCA to RCA cables(Sold Seperately) are all that is needed. It is also QSK compatible. Power It can be powered by an optional 9 volt battery or power cube. Why do I need a Relay buffer between my Amplifier and Radio? When connecting different brands of Radios and Amplifiers, there may be switching voltage, polarity, and current capability issues that can cause damage to your radio or amplifier if connected without a switching buffer between them. Even if your internal radio switching looks like it should be usable, it is alway nice to have an extra degree of isolation between your amplifier and radio. Reliability All inputs an outputs are protected making the ERB-1 extremely Rugged and Reliable.
