[Flexradio] Go Mobile...

2014-04-14 Thread Russ Dearmore

For those of you who are thinking of using your Flex mobile...  I have used my
3000 last month in the Oklahoma QSO Party and last week-end in the New Mexico
QSO Party, receiving outstanding sig reports.  I'm using a MacBook Pro laptop
that has the 800 Firewire connector.   A 800 to 400 FW adapter was necessary.
Most of them do not have FW but I stumbled upon this one at an Apple store much
to my surprise.  No issues what so ever  Actually seeing the spectrum is so
advantageous I don't think I could ever go back to the old fumbling around the
band method we grew up with.  Using Bootcamp enables me to use my Windows 7
64bit operating system.  I place the 3000 out of the way on the passenger side
floor and after stopping to operate, I reach for the laptop and have a ball.
After 51 years as a ham I still get that old thrill when the contest starts...
What a hobby.   73's  Russ K5ZZR

Re: [Flexradio] Question for all

2014-02-17 Thread Russ Dearmore
Bill,  I had this problem twice with my Alpha 8406 amp.  The first time was a
bad used Alpha Delta coax switch I had picked up at the Plano Hamcom and the
second time I was in a winter storm and the ice was essentially shorting out my
beam.  When the weather breaks you may not have a problem at all.  If you are
using an antenna switching relay the outside unit could be freezing up also.
Just go through a substitution type troubleshooting procedure and I bet you
find the problem pronto.    Russ K5ZZR

[Flexradio] John's Tuner Issue

2014-01-09 Thread Russ Dearmore
John,  I participate in several state QSO parties single op unassisted and find
myself looking for a good spot to stop and activate a county in terrain similar
to yours.  I use the Tarheel 200 and fine tune with the iportable antenna
analyzer.  I'm very happy with the results and you would have the capability to
be truly mobile.  That way I don't have to rely on a tuner which may or may not
be the best thing for maximum signal output.  Good luck and hope to hear you
come back to me in a QSO party this year.  Russ   K5ZZR

Bob,  If you value your time and sanity I'd go with one of Neal's computers.
Konrad had some good advice which may save you some money but please let Neal

[Flexradio] 5000 Disco

I agree most people won't always use that many slice receivers but when using
Search and Pounce techniques in state QSO Parties it would be nice to monitor
most of the suggested frequencies.  It has to be an advantage for sure..

[Flexradio] 5000 Discontinued

2013-05-18 Thread Russ Dearmore
In 20 years the new generation of hams will see the tiny SDR displays on todays
radios and wonder why we settled for them.  The older I get the more I
appreciate viewing the large computer display and doubt that I'll go back to
the horse and  buggy.  Without a doubt the big 3 are working feverishly to
design there own answer to Flex Radio just as they did when SSB first hit the
ham scene.  Besides, buying a much better computer has opened new doors for me
and I'm sure most others..

I use the Collins 30L1 as well, using the Ameritron ARB-704 relay and have had
similar reports.  Since I use the 572's instead of the 811's I push it more and
get 500 to 600 watts routinely even though I back off a bit from maximum
output.  Plus they're fixable if anything does happen to these wonderful amps.
WARC bands are no problem either.  I usually don't need more power but may
someday bite the bullet and get a legal limit Alpha.   Till then I love my 30L1
with my 3000.   Russ  K5ZZR

Re: [Flexradio] SDR-3000 Issue

2012-11-22 Thread Russ Dearmore
RJ,  If you have one of the gold colored firewire cables I would recommend
getting one of the Granite Digital cables from Flex, and throwing the old one
to the moon.    The supplied cables sometimes last a few months and then
they stop working.  Regardless it will help with future troubleshooting and
help eleminate one of the most common problems and help point you in the right
direction.  Good luck.
