OK -

Now that the 5000 has met it's demise, due to the unavailability of
"parts" - my question is, if, in the future, my 5000 needs that elusive
"part" that is unavailable, where does that leave me?

Also, will the accessories, i.e. ATU, 2nd receiver, etc, remain available
for the foreseable future, or shoud we purchase them now before they also
become unavailable?

Not trying to be a S/A, just wondering.

Re: [Flexradio] Amp for the 1500

2012-06-06 Thread Samuel Strongin
One of the main problem with these amps are the UNregulated bias supply .
The bias that sets the class of the amp will vary greatly when it is not
regulated . . Also the amps are highly overrated as far as power output. A
pig with lipstick is still a pig. These amps are junk and are not approved
for amateur use and could not pass requirements . Tokyo High Powers small
amp is fine , Look for an old Yeasu FL-110 it is a fine amp or wait for
Elecraft to relese their 100 watt amp .

The issue is overdrive.

I have a HLA300v that has plenty of gain and the F1500 is a good match at
5W.
300W at 160m, lower gain at 10m. They use 4 SD1446 75W transistors. PEP
claims are double reality. New version has MRF455 60W bipolars.

Clean to about 200W level with output filtering and "protection".
However with that much gain overdrive with other radios is not hard to do at
all.

Get a mate with an SDR with panadapter to check your signal!

It is going to take a minimum of 5 watts for it to work. That is
at the max end of the 1500's RF output so you may not have enough
RF output to tune the ATU. I have this problem with a CG-5000 ATU

I operate an MFJ-998 with an ALS-1300 and a F5K. I find that the '998
really wants at least 15 watts on some bands to tune up correctly. Even
worse, depending on the antenna impedance, sometimes after tuning up at one
frequency, it will fail to retune at another frequency without either a
power cycle or increasing the TX power to about 50 watts.

Burt

with respect

I am sure I/Y/K would never get away with releasing a radio in beta sold
on with a promise of a full release soon .. only for 9 months later still
to be promising a working release.

And its not just CW that was broken ... I read the sales blurb again on
Waters and Stanton site last night to reconfirm what I purchased and
there are many functions broken or not working or still being developed
that are in the sales - the sales reads more like a wish list than actual
live features.

Do I expect it to be perfect - no

Do I expect it to be 99% - yes

I paid a significant amount of money for my flex 1500 - this isnt a home
built kit, or group of amateurs working in their spare time, this is a
commercial sale, selling in major magazines, selling a product that is
not (IMHO) working

I bought the flex1500 on good faith knowing that a full release in work -
yes they have had issues around a USB driver but what worries me is the
vast amount of stuff not related to USB that does not work.

Its a blind view to say I am an amateur so I should not expect it to work
properly - I paid a lot of hard earned cash - if it had been home
electronics item I would have returned it long ago - depending on how my
issues are resolved I may yet be returning it! Id be returning it
regardless of it its flex or icom/yae/kenw.

Minor miracle - hardly - if I had it out the box and all the features
working I maybe thinking and informing others that yes its a good buy -
At the moment - expensive paperweight.

Am I alone in that view - No - I know others are also stuck - a colleague
also bought a Flex at the same time as me - has his experience been the
same - yes indeed it has.

I dont have a blinkered view - I bought a commerical bit of kit -
expensive at that - I expect a working product soon- or else Flex will be
minus one customer and I am quite sure with the number of 1500 owners I
wont be the only one.

Is Flex all I would like, no.
We were told 2.x would be ready in January 2010, it was not.
We have been told "it will be ready when it's ready", not words that
sound customer friendly.

There have been problems with CW keying.
HOWEVER
no company is even close to their customer service. I would bet you
could not get the CEO of Icom, Yaesu, Kenwood to answer your questions.
You are amateurs, expect it to not be perfect. Flex is doing all it can
to work with you. Someone here said POS in referring to the 1500, I had
some problems but Flex helped me get it going. To me the 1500 is a minor
miracle that something that small can do so much.
Flex defines customer service. I cannot believe they are making money
off of hams.

I know that many people have been looking for a device to control things
like antenna switches, relays, or generate BCD output to control Yaesu
amplifiers. I have discovered a product that works just fine with PowerSDR
and DDutil to perform this function. It is the Elecraft KRC2 Band Decoder
and Controller.

http://www.elecraft.com/KRC2/krc2.htm

Normally this device is intended to work with the Elecraft K2 transceiver
but Elecraft has provided various inputs to allow it to talk to products
from Icom, Yaesu, and Kenwood. It is the latter that makes it work with
PowerSDR and DDutil. I purchased one to try out and it works fine with
DDutil without any modifications.

The KRC2 has source and sink relay lines for all standard HF bands,
160m-10m, three xvtr band outputs, plus three ACC outputs. The source
outputs can source 1/2A at up to 50V (normally jumpered to the 12V input
but
can be separated and an external voltage supplied). The sink lines will
pull
a line to ground and sink up to 1/2A. In addition it also has TTL-level
BCD
outputs. This eliminates the need for a parallel port in order to
bandswitch

external devices.

If you are looking for a box to control antenna relays or to control an
amplifier that requires BCD TTL control signals, this box is for you.

Interface to DDutil using a serial port connected to the XCVR input of the
KRC2 using a null-modem cable. Standard data rate is 19200/8/n/1.
Configure

DDutil to output data to the KRC2 on a passive listener port.

One thing it won't do (and the one thing I needed it to do :-) is to
output

the analog voltage that older Icom kit uses to band-switch. The Elecraft
documentation led me to believe that it would but it does not. It will
accept the control voltage as input but it will not generate it. Looks
like

I am still going to have to roll my own for that. ;-)

At this time there are not any published specs, but they are within FCC
specification. If you are worried about third-order IMD products, just
turn the drive control down to 70 rather than 100.

There were two 3-500 tubes glowing red, how did they get them in there,
amazing

Hi there,

could someone tell me, how good or bad is the PA from the 1500, about
unwanted signals, because i use a PA with 500Watt, if the specs are to
bad, i wouldn't anymore send with the PA, icouldn't get anywhere the
specs about the flex 1500 PA.
Thanks for any comment about this, or maybe someone got a Testreport.

Martin
