[Flexradio] My turn for help

2010-05-17 Thread Steve Jones
My flex 5k was operating fine this weekend. Today it seem to be deaf.
I have swapped antennas and coax. The icom hears just fine on all the
antennas and coax.
Both the main RX and RX2 can't hear outside signals. They can hear the icom
transmitter without an antenna and with the flex on a dummy load.
I have reset the database. I have rerun the RX calibration routines with no
errors. It seems to xmit just fine.

Firmware 1.3.0.8
PSDR 1.18.6

Hello everyone, I'm not currently a Flex owner, but I'm sitting on
the fence - seriously on the fence and if you don't mind, I have a
lot of questions. I'm not sure I even know where to start

I've talked to Matt and Dudley (via email). I've downladed the
PowerSDR demo. I've read portions of the Owners Manual and Set Up
Guides as well as the wiki on both DDUtil and Com0Com. Matt was
very helpful but he suggested that I also pose my questions here.

I'm currently using an Icom 756 ProIII and and Icom PW1 amplifier.
I use a Yaesu G-2800DXA rotor with an Idiom Press RotorCard. I work
digital (primarilly rtty) modes through a Rigblaster Pro in fsk
mode. I usually use Ham Radio Deluxe - not so much for rig control
but more for logging. I use the stand alone logger and like it (for
the most part). I mainly chase DX and do some casual contesting
(but that will probably change shortly). I've been considering an
Icom 7800 as a replacement for the 756 ProIII then started looking
at the Flex 5000A.

So here goes:

Computer:

I can take one of two computer out of service at my office: 3.00 GHz
Intel Dual Core cpu, Windows XPX64, 8Gb ram, (2) 10,000 rpm SATA
drives configured as Raid 0 and either an NVDIA Quadro FX 4600 or
and NVIDIA GTX 260 video cards. I have an extra PCIEx16 slot
available for a firewire controller if necessary.

The second one is similar but uses a single hard drive and 32 bit
Windows XP Pro with 4Gb of ram. The firewire controller would
occupy a standard PCI slot.

It looks as though either one would be more than adequate for
PowerSDR. Yes, no, maybe?

Will I notice improved performance if I switch to a slightly slower
Quad Core cpu?

Will there be much, if any, performance difference between the 23
bit and 64 bit operating systems?

Station:

How much real world difference is there between the receivers
between the 5000A and either of the Icoms?

Is anyone using their Flex with a PW1?

Do you need to use an external relay between it and the rig?

Does the autotuner behave properly?

Have you had any other issues with it?

Has anyone tried controlling a rotor through the Idiom Press
RotorCard?

If yes, have you had any other issues with it?

Software:

Has anyone used the newer stand-alone HRD logging program with
PowerSDR and DDutil?

Does it work ok?

If not, does there seem a be a lgging program that is particulaly
well suited to the Flex/PowerSDR combo?

Flex:

How difficult did you find it to get your Flex set up and configured
out of the box (not just working but working reliably and well)?

Is it capable of true QSK operation or near QSK operation?

How much has the radio changed since the QST and CQ reviews.

I really hate to ask this, but is there anyone in the far north
Dallas area that would be willing to demo their 5000A?

Sorry for the long post but I want to get as many of ducks in row as
possible before I pull the trigger on this and I'd rather not put
Flex through the hassle of shipping the rig to be then having to
deal with a return if I decide it's not for me.

Thanks, and sorry for all the questions and the long post.
