It depends on whether or not the drivers adhere strictly to the ASIO SDK
2 rules. There can only be ONE ASIO device in a system that adhere
strictly to the rules.

There is an alternative that needs further investigation.

Re: [Flexradio] 2 radios

2007-04-15 Thread k5nwa
I don't have a clue, but they software was treating it as live video
and kept track of dropped frames and there were none.

My son was very anti-Mac but he was having problem doing professional
quality videos without dropping some frames, I put this demo to test
the systems and show him that at the time (middle to late 90's) if he
wanted to do decent video he needed to do it on a Mac and use my
Firewire drives to store the videos. After that demo he ate crow and
asked if he could have one of the 8500's, he had no dropped frame
issues after that.

The moral is that Firewire when implemented correctly is awesome for
high data rates with data that is time sensitive, that was the
purpose behind it when Apple invented it in the first place.
Something is not quite right with the Windows implementation, I
notice a huge transfer rate difference between my Mac and my PC's
running Windows using the same drives, cables, and interface cards. I
also noticed that when transferring a lot of data, if I ask for a
second set of transfers at the same time, the Windows PC chokes on
it, while the Mac does not, something is not quite right in Windows.

nothing compared to the video streams.

Disclaimer: that was on MAC's, they handle video like a duck takes to
the water, these were however very old Mac's, 8500's with 350MHz G3 CPU's.

But isn't this a packet system in which the data goes in packets
with error-checking on each batch? If this is true then when a
glitch occurs the system stops and gets another copy - the system
could slow down to a crawl and the data would still get through
eventually, but might NOT be happening at the video's real-time data
rate speed.

You don't want pops and lapses in the audio coming through if you
are actually listening to it rather than simply transferring a file.

[Flexradio] 2 radios

2007-04-14 Thread Skip K3CC
Can the new Flex 5000 run as below ??

Would it be possible using 2 monitors and sound cards, running versions of
the software in separate directories under windows XP pro to have 2 radios
on one computer

I also use Logic 8 logging software and control. I guess I could use 2
monitor with one radio screen and a logging screen for Logic 8 .

[Flexradio] 2 radios

2007-04-14 Thread Lee A Crocker
The F5K does not have a sound card. The hardware has been upgraded and what
used to be done in a sound card is now done in a dedicated internal DSP unit.
So if you purchase 2 x 5K's you basically have 2 complete systems. That being
said I do not presently know if you can run 2 firewire based 5K's on the same
system.

I have 2 SDR-1K's and I run them at the same time every day. For the SDR-1K's
I have to use 2 different sound cards since the drivers for the firebox or the
FA-66 do not allow 2 instances of the product. What I run is one Firebox and
one FA-66, one radio on a parallel port and the other on a USB adapter. I use
one as a CW radio exclusively and one as SSB/AM/Digital/IF for my transverters
all purpose goof around radio. One radio uses a serial interface for CW input
and the other uses the jack on the back. PowerSDR for each rig is in its own
seperate SVN folder. Each radio had to be initialized seperately and the cal
routines gone through seperately, and they basically are totally independent.
With respect to CAT control I don't know if Logic 8 allows you to run 2
seperate radios simultenaously. I use the DXlab suite which uses a soft
control button to switch back and forth between rigs, and I can do that fine.
The problem comes when you want a DX cluter spot to tune
the CW radio, how does the CAT program tell which radio it is supposed to be
sending commands to? So basically I think if Logic 8 is smart enough to run 2
CAT radios, 2 instances of PowerSDR is smart enough to respond.

Tnx very much Lee for your info. I run PropNet from here with PSK
controlling 2 radios . Each has a separate soundcard and software in a
separate directory. Both radio have access to the internet for reporting
Catches.
At the same time I have both an Orion and Ft 1000MP/mkV control using Logic
8. Logic 8 will control up to 6 radios at one time. DX Cluster can be
switched to any radio. My computer has 10 comports, USB , Firewire and
network into the internet.

My idea is the same as yours. I would like to use one SDR for a dedicated
HF radio and the other for digital and transverters.

I guess I should do some reading on Firewire. I was under the impression
that Firewire was similar to USB allowing multi connects.

I also read the info incorrectly about the new radio. I thought it would
be available with/without the soundcard.

I have another computer which will go online this week. Another is in the
works as the price drops on Intel dual core CPU's and Asus mother boards.

Hi Skip,
FireWire allows for multi connects, we had a system with several
tenth of harddisks connected trough firewire. Each ATA disk had a small
PCboard connected with a firewire in- and out- connector.
I do not know if the 5000 will have an in- and an out- connector, but bandwidth
will sure be a problem if devices are daisy chained.
Can use multiple ports on the PC however.
I hope the software makes that possible.(processing power is less an issue)

I know the firewire will handle more than one thing the question is can the
same drivers be active at the same time and identify each radio uniquely. I'm
sure it can be worked out.

The firebox drivers are so anal that they won't even allow a firebox card to be
swapped out for another firebox card without uninstalling and reinstalling the
drivers. Those drivers lock themselves to a specific card.

I know in that test I had 2 masters (CPU's), and two HD connected
together, with no problems, but on my Windows PC if you connect two
masters, the Blue Screen of Death will hit in a second or two.

Windows does not seem to handle Firewire too well, I have terrible
corruption problems when I would hook up a 2.5 TB array to it, I
ended hooking it up to a Linux PC so I would stop the incessant file
loss. All is not well in Billy land.
