Re: [Flexradio] Audio Question - Leveler ALC Time Constant Values

2012-06-17 Thread Tom, DF2LH
Hello Steve

today (sri..) i read your mail. I think it is a good idea to make a
comparison of the used settings. So here are mine:

Leveler: Max Gain 1 (dB), Attack Time 2 (mS), Decay Time 200 (mS),
and Hang Time 200 (mS)
ALC: Attack Time 2 (mS), Decay Time 10 (mS), and Hang Time 100 (mS)

Mostly DX'ing :-)

[Flexradio] Audio Question - Leveler ALC Time Constant Values

2012-06-07 Thread Steve Floyd
After speaking with several FlexRadio users I have learned that the transmit
audio quality for the Flex series radios is also significantly affected by the
time constant set values for the AGC circuits; Leveler and ALC.
While AGC time constants do not affect the tonal balance, they do have a big
influence on the dynamic characteristics of the audio, either sounding dull,
or soft or articulate and alive.
These time constant values are very important, as any Broadcast Engineer knows
all too well.

Additionally, both the Leveler and ALC type AGC circuits are configured in
series and their dynamic gain reduction characteristics will interact with each
other.

For those who have experimented with these settings, what time constants for
each AGC function seem to provide the most natural and alive sound?

For the Leveler, the user can set the following:  Attack Time (mS), Decay Time
(mS), and Hang Time (mS)

For the ALC, the user can set the following:  Attack Time (mS), Decay Time
(mS), and Hang Time (mS)

Thanks for sharing your experience with these time constant settings.
