Re: [Flexradio] Market for 5000A's

2015-03-02 Thread Mike
I have a 5000A loaded also with the VU units and enjoy the heck out of it.
I am considering the purchase of a 6500 or 6300 when 1.4 lands and I see
what that looks like and how well it is received. I had thought after
getting a 6xxx and after becoming familiar with it, selling the 5000A. I do
like the idea of keeping the 5K in the shack also if there were updates to
PSDR to look forward to. I am still intrigued by the possible expansion of
the receive capability to the VU units. This doc pdf looks like the VU will
sample a larger slice but maybe PSDR wasn't written to analyze it?

I think there are probably numerous valid ideas for the 5000's and 3000's
that owners could come up with to make keeping these amazing radios
worthwhile. I for one would spend a couple hundred bucks a year to keep the
radio current.

This is the box that took my radio experience from 2D to 3D.. Conventional
knob radios now seem flat to me. Mike W1BFA

I know I tried to sell my basic, no options, 5000A three times.? I listed it
for $1500 and had no offers.? I dropped the price to $1300, and still no
bites (this was five months ago).? I finally put it on for $1200, and the
only response was from some crank who berated me for "destroying the value
of the 5000A".? At that point, I concluded that the radio was worth more to
me than the market would pay.? It amazes me that Yaesu FT1000MP's or
FT2000's still bring between $1200-$1800 (sometimes more), rigs that are
clearly inferior to the 5000A.? I'll keep mine as long as the software
continues to work, and the hardware can be maintained.? Wouldn't mind a 6300
or a 6500 though.?K0GFY? R. Hunter Ellington

Re: [Flexradio] Market for 5000A's

2015-03-01 Thread Ken Akin
I bought my 5000 when it was the only model almost available (bought at
Dayton, arrived here in August or September). I did order the ATU and the
second receiver. I have never used the ATU much (I use a remote ATU).

In my opinion, the basic 5000 does not offer much over the 3000 for most
people (a more stable local oscillator is all that comes to mind). But it
was about 2 years after the 5000 that the 3000 came out.

Where the 5000 is second to the 6700 is the second receiver. If you have
noise problems or are a weak signal hound, the "beam steering" or ESP
feature is a gem. With a proper second antenna I can null out noise unlike
anything I have seen. Delightful indeed.

I'll keep my 5000 and the XP computer that I built to run it. I'll get a
6700 some day, and I likely continue to keep the 5K.

That's the beauty of a free market system. Some like it (buyers), some
don't (sellers).

Wait a couple of months are post it again, someone may yet have the urge.

The 5000A the previous gentlemen wrote about seemed to be a reasonable
buy at

the $1,500 level.

I have my Flex 5000A w/2nd Rx and ant tuner for sale. $1850 and have had
several "interested" but no final sale yet so it's still available.

I agree on the performance of the 5000A vs. most radios selling for equal
and sometimes much more! It's an excellent rig for the money.
