Sounds like a nice machine - and the price is good too!

What OS are you using - XP or Vista?

Are there still reasons (specific to running PowerSDR) for NOT using
Vista or is Vista officially blessed by Flex now?

Subject: [Flexradio] New computer for the 5000

After talking with Eric at Dayton I decided to build a new computer in
preparation for my 5000A. I was using an older 2.0 GHz Dell. I found
a
new case made by Apevia (X-Qpack2-NW-BK/500) that is similar in size
to
the 5000. It is a cube that is about the same height as the 5000 and
about 2 wider. I think it will look very nice along side the 5000.
 This
case comes with a 500 watt PS and seems to be RF quiet. This case is
designed for the micro ATX board. After consulting with Eric, I
 decided
on the E6600 Core 2 Dual processor on an Intel DG965OT motherboard
 using
the G965 chip set and 2 Gig memory. This chip set has onboard video,
fire wire ports, Ethernet port, serial port, parallel port, sound
 card,
and a ton of USB ports. It is working very well with my SDR-1000. The
onboard video works very well but I decided to upgrade it to a 6800
video card for dual monitor support. I also equipped it with an
inexpensive SATA 320G hard drive and DVD burner. The stock case fans
create about the same noise level as the SDR-1000. I changed them out
for little better fans, expecting the noise level to be down around
the
 level of the new 5000.

The CPU loafs along at 8% with PowerSDR SVN 1210. I'm using the
FA-66
sound card at 192K. There is absolutely no popping at all.

I purchased everything for about $700 from Newegg and spent a day
putting it together and loading software.

This was the first computer I've put together in 20 years and it was a
 fun project.

The Intel is very specific on the memory chips so I choose from the
 recommended list.

Re: [Flexradio] New computer for the 5000

2007-06-14 Thread Thompson_Peter
Tim,

Thanks for the pointer to the official Flex word on the subject.

I'm thinking of upgrading my PC and have been looking around lately at
what's available. Since my PC interfaces to HPSDR it definitely needs
the USB driver to talk to Ozy so reverting to the parallel port is not
an option.

My preference would be to stay with XP but I noted that many of the
offerings I looked at on various PC vendor web sites only offer Vista.
It would seem that Flex will soon need to address this as XP becomes
increasingly hard to obtain. However, it seems that the remaining
problems are not that difficult to solve and, no doubt Vista will be
blessed in the near future.

Of course Linux and Mac could also be in my future! So many Operating
Systems, so little time!

Re: [Flexradio] New computer for the 5000

2007-06-14 Thread Tim Ellison
The issue with Vista is not PowerSDR, but the drivers needed to
interface to the external hardware (sound cards and Firewire
interfaces). It takes a bit of testing to certify with a particular
OS. I am sure it will be done in the near future, probably with the
FLEX-5000 PowerSDR 1.10.0 first and then with the SDR-1000
