Yes. Referencing the "Chase View" defined in preferences.xml: change the
x-offset to 200.0 and the z-offset to -1.0 and you'll be looking straight down
from 200m above the aircraft.

[Flightgear-devel] Question about new view -- is this possible?

2003-02-04 Thread Ima Sudonim
X-plane has a view where you can fly looking down over your scenery.
Like your flying over a map with an icon representing your plane. Nice
for VFR and for the navigationally-challengeed. A nice second view
window to have up when you're as cluless as I seem to be sometimes.
Can this be done with the property system now? It's a combination of
an atlas-like top down thing with showing the plane's heading and maybe
speed. Using the hud could be fun, too!

BTW, I built with 2.95 because trying to build fg on macos x with gcc3
gives wierd errors (not that I remember any of them). Maybe someone
else would know the specifics?

Thanks!

[Flightgear-devel] VFR add-on for flightgear

2003-02-04 Thread Ima Sudonim
This isn't SP*AM, I promise! It's related to flightgear. Well, possibly, anyway.

I saw a while back saw an ad for a vfr flying app called ez-landmark. It has a database listing significant scenery objects that can be used to identify landmarks for VFR in FS 2k2.

If you fly over major landmarks, the software labels it on the simulator's screen next to the object. How difficult would it be to add something similar to FlightGear? Is anyone doing such a thing already? In what component? At the very least, it could be used to label airports, ndbs, which Atlas already does so it must be in teh data. (I know, I know, I rarely know at what airport I'm landing 8-) Landed at Andrews Airforce Base by mistake in flightgear three weeks ago. Oops! Looked like regan national with longer runways!)

Is there a freely available database of labeled locations (lat/lon of the Louvre, buckinham palace, the kremlin, the white house, Elvis' house, the Hollywood sign, etc) It sounds like a useful tool. The documentation on their web site says they got most of their labels from the user community. It would be nice if parks, rivers, etc. could be labeled to, but that would be harder to tie into lat/long than a building maybe.

There is more information available at: http://www.abacuspub.com/ezlandmark/ if I haven't explained this correctly. I downloaded a demo, but am not interested in fs2k2 anymore.

Perhaps it could be tied into Atlas? I guess the database would be independent of the scenery files themselves.

I actually asked this last month but didn't follow up on it. I think it got lost in the shuffle. Sorry

BTW, thanks for the help with Atlas, everything built fine with libpng and the opengl and glut frameworks. I don't know how to use the Map/MapPS stuff at all, but Atlas itself works (although flightgear framerates fall thru the floor -- I'm using --atlas=socket,out,0.5,127.0.0.1,5600,udp if anyone has any different suggestions). I haven't had much of a chance to play with it today, however, my arthritis is really bothering me 8-( Somehow I thought that a 500 MHz G3 powerpc would run it better. The powerbook only has an 8MB ATI card tho. There was one hit with a name conflict (map and Map are the same file on the macos x file system)

Thanks!

2003-02-04 Thread Jim Wilson
This is really cool! Looking through the changes I couldn't see...should this
work with all properties? The orientation and position path data doesn't seem
to update realtime. I can see lots of ways this can be used for debugging.
Performance impact is minimal.

Best,

Jim

Oh, I knew exactly why it's like that once I understood what he was talking

still tying up loose ends from the surprise server move/upgrade.

FWIW I expect to be migrating it to the main flightgear CVS real soon now
anyway.

[Flightgear-devel] Unable to access base package via CVS

2003-02-04 Thread James Turner
Since the base cvs was brought back up, I haven't been able to update
it:

I get:
cvs server: Updating .
cvs [server aborted]: cannot stat /tmpcvslck: No such file or directory
cvs [server aborted]: cannot stat /tmpcvslck: No such file or directory

This happened on both OS-X and Linux, so I blew away my tree on OS-X
and tried a clean checkout. Cvs login worked fine, doing co produced:

cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/cvsroot co fgfsbase
cvs server: Updating fgfsbase
cvs server: cannot open directory /FlightGear/FlightGear: No such file
or directory
cvs server: skipping directory fgfsbase

Any suggestions?

It might just be a simple permission problem ...

Also I propose use vertex array range to render terrain
What's your thoughts guys?

Re: [Flightgear-devel] [PATCH] switching views (trivial)

2003-02-04 Thread Geoff Reidy
Hi Jim,

Sounds good, as long as we can still switch views by the keyboard.
Mouse/joystick/keyboard can be a bit hard to juggle :)

Regards,
Geoff

Jim Wilson wrote:
Hi Geoff,

I've got several changes and fixes to the viewer code, one of which changes
the view manager to allow what you are describing. It is actually a little
more flexible than just reversing, you can select the view through a
property. This allows going forward, backward and directly to any specific
view without using a special command.

It's been done for a couple weeks now. I'll try and get it together and
submit the changes in the next day or two.

Best,

Hi all,

I always wanted to be able to hit shift "v" to be able to cycle through
views the other way.

That way you can toggle between 2 views without having to go through
them all, which can be uncomfortable if you're about to run into a
mountain or something.

It looked like the code was all there to do it so I have made these
minor modifications to enable it. It works fine for me but be warned I
know just enough C++ to be dangerous ;)

Diffs are against current cvs.

There is one patch for the base:
home.pacific.net.au/~greendog/flightgear/rev-view-cycle-fgfsbase.diff

and one for Flightgear:
home.pacific.net.au/~greendog/flightgear/rev-view-cycle-FlightGear.diff
