Indeed, and my last option, would be to give a try to the free MS Visual C++ Toolkit 2003 (..a free edition of Microsoft's professional Visual C++ optimizing compiler and standard libraries the same optimizing compiler and standard libraries that ship in Visual Studio .NET 2003 Professional..). You have no IDE, but may be you can use Eclipse + CDT for that part. Whatever you try and/or finally use, may I ask you a favor? Please document your findings (what you use, what you discard, etc.) and also document the settings in your platform, as a How-To for others to come, who can experience the same questions as you: a development platform for Windows. But I can understand that you'll only want to tackle one problem at once. I would appreciate an opportunity to review the MSVC++ path if I can get together with Chuck. You could try to write down the detailed steps you took to compile FGFS and thus produce an HOWTO that we can put on the homepage for others. So you should get a recent MSVC and all the source code first. I usually create one directory where I unpack all the libraries in subdirectories. E.g. C:\projects C:\projects\plib\... C:\projects\SimGear\... C:\projects\FlightGear\... Then I try to compile the libraries according to their dependencies (zlib, plib, simgear) And at last flightgear itself. So that was what should happen (and what worked back in 2000/2001 for me...) The real life might be a bit more complicated - but the general direction will be the same. I unfortunately do not have an FTP server or the like to make my version of the source code available to you. But since you have some time, I could simply e-mail you the source code that I have built along with some simple setup instructions. Collectively, the source code for all of the projects is rather large; however, I believe that they could be split up sufficiently enough to be e-mailed. I know you had mentioned MSVC++ as your desired path. Im using v.6.0, but I have heard from some that it is easier to build with Visual C++ .NET (or v.7). There are some threads in last months mailing list archive that discuss building with the .NET version along with links to established project files, if that is of any interest to you.
