Re: Default branch name in GitHub

2020-10-26 Thread Justin Obara
The branches for fluid-lab <https://github.com/fluid-lab> inclusive-design
<https://github.com/inclusive-design/> and fluid-project
<https://github.com/fluid-project> have all been updated to remove the “master”
branch in favour of “main”. There were some repos that didn’t use “master”;
those have been left as is. For those that now have “main” as the default. I’ve
made PRs to many of them, but there may still be some stray “master” references
in some repos.

It seems that links to the “master" branch will redirect to “main", so our
external linking should be okay. However, as we find references to them in code
or otherwise, we should update as needed.

Thanks
Justin

2020-10-20 Thread Justin Obara
Thanks for all the feedback. I also discussed this at the planning meeting
today and was met with similar responses. I plan to begin migration to “main”
for all of our non-archived git repositories. The process isn’t difficult but
we have a lot of repos, so it may take some time.

If you have not yet had a chance to provide feedback or raise a concern, please
feel free to continue the discussion.

Thanks

I think “main” is a good name too. I’m glad this is only a convention in Git so
we’re free to choose.

Default branch name in GitHub

2020-10-20 Thread Justin Obara
While this has actually been in effect since Oct 1 I just now realized that by
default GitHub creates new repositories using “main” instead of “master”. I’m
not intending to weigh in on the naming debate here, but I do think we need
consistency.

For details about the name change and how to manage it, see
https://github.com/github/renaming

What I’d propose is that we pick a name that the community is most comfortable
with. Below are the tasks to address after a decision is made.

Options:

Keep Master:
Update the organization settings for the “Repository default branch” name
Change any newly created repos to use “master” as the default branch
Use Main:
Update all existing repos to use “main” as the default repo
Update our individual forks as needed
Use some other name:
Update the organization settings for the “Repository default branch” name
Update all existing repos to use “main” as the default repo
Update our individual forks as needed

Thanks
