[foldingboats] Holz, Gummi, Linen

2001-01-15 Thread Stefano Moretti

OK ! I'll jump at this challenge, and will try to make it. I'll sew my parka
for that time as well since to me it sounds horribly rainy and cold
september in the Baltic (or North sea).

What about meetings going on in Lake constanz ?? Or have you ever paddled in
Venice ?? look at Vogalonga official page: early may each year.

Let me know, Stefano

Stefano: The springy material should be narrow strips, in my view,
placed
 on the
  leg
of the P to keep the coaming + leg of the p assembly from becoming an
  "o".
Get the idea ?? Perhaps narrow strips of aluminum (but metal is not my
choice here) or even strips of very thin glued plywood (aircraft type)
mught fit the need. Some brains stroming here is needed...

I liked Michael's idea a lot. Simple to achieve and it should work IMO.
Looks like I have to grab those PVC stuff laying in the basement and start
 glueing ...

My sea sock (I've never seen one, so it's just from descriptions that
 I've
sewn my own) has a shock cord, 5 mm, around the rim. The cord is spliced
so there are no bumps. Stretchable flat material is an idea actually,
 There
is a rubbery non slip coated material which is meant to be sewn on women
panties (like self-hold up garters...) and is sold where buttons,
fabric,
  thread etc are sold.
You may want to try it. It takes less space than the shock cord
(stretched this is about 3.5 mm.

Uhm, so many choices to make for something as simple as a sea sock!!!

PS what a beatiful kayak you have !! great job also in re-skinning.
Maybe
after launching mine we can convene somewhere in Europe ?

Great idea! I always seem to travel around (that's what some people say,
at
least) so a trip together would certainly be possible.

There is a yearly meeting of kayak self-builders (mainly traditional
skin-on-frame kayaks and baidarkas, wooden kayaks but also some folders)
in
the North of Germany in the Baltic Sea (might be at the North Sea Coast
next year). The meeting is called "Holz, Gummi, Leinen" (Wood, Rubber,
Linen) and usually takes place in September. Enough time to complete your
 folder, Stefano!

Last winter I got my hands on an double Klepper built
in the 70's. It was my neighbors and he lovingly
stored it on his woodpile for 10 years. I thought it
might be a good fixer upper project, but when I peeled
the dry rotten skin off the hull, I changed my mind
and decided it would be a bad fixer upper project.
I've never used a Klepper in good shape, but the wood
feels weak. Anyways, maybe the frame is still
useable, but if not, all the hardware is there and
wood templates to copy.

Since I got married, my "workshop" (if one could
indeed call it by that name) is still at my old
roomates' house. They're getting a new roomate and
need all of my stuff out of the basement. I have
nowhere to store this frame, so if they haven't gotten
rid of it yet, I'm inclined to just give the frame
away. It pains me too much to throw away a Klepper.

So, if anyone in the Washington D.C. area is bored and
needs a winter (and spring and summer and
fall)project, I've got a Klepper for you.

2001-01-15 Thread Barry E. Muller

Hey Lew,

I already have a double klepper and could use the parts (especially the
metal ones) for spares. I'd gladly pay for the shipping of the frame.
I'll even through in a little for your trouble. Let me know.
