[fossil-users] Proposed improvement to inherited privileges subscripts.

2014-09-27 Thread Andy Bradford
Hello,

I like the new characters for the inherited privileges, however, I find
that the R character, and the text that precedes it also being black, to
be not very readable. The R character make Write Wiki look like Write
WikiR to me (except the R is slightly subscripted and also other words
with R that follow seem to be similarly difficult to read). I would like
to propose the following:

http://www.fossil-scm.org/index.html/info/957d0374073603321064655462bcaace585a9f9f

This causes the subscript to have just a little more space between it
and the word it follows, which makes it much easier to tell that it
isn't part of the word. The subscripts with color of course are easily
discernable as not part of the word because of the contrast in color.

Thanks,

Andy

Another alternative might be to wrap the subscripted characters in
parens/braces, e.g. (R), [R], or {R}.

Good suggestion. I think I like [R] and it looks quite nice with both
the CSS and the []:

I'm not CSS guru, but I wonder if it would be possible to add the []
with CSS... Otherwise, I kind of like them both being there. Compare it
to a Fossil that does not have it:

Thoughts?

With CSS3 it is possible, but that eliminates a wide range of older
browsers, as well as text-based ones (which was what i was mainly thinking
about with this suggestion, as those don't support CSS-based spacing,
either).

The first one is much nicer/cleaner. How about we change the [R] from black
to... something else? We've used all the primary colors already, though.

With the braces in place, subscripting might not even be necessary. Just
tried it in Chrome by changing a SUB to a SPAN. The SUB looks marginally
better, IMO.

Another potential tweak, though i'm not sure if it's an improvement or not:

span.ueditInheritDeveloper

and friends could use:

font-family: monospace;

still trying to decide if that is more readable, though. Not yet convinced.

Not sure if this is a bug or not, but the [A] subscript isn't used anywhere.

If it truly is not needed, we could re-use blue for the [R] subscript.

I see it used here locally for the privileges inherited by anonymous?

I don't want to hijack this thread; however, I would like to make a feature
request while we are improving the user privilege screen:

When a privilege checkbox is checked/unchecked, it would be nice to
have
a read-only textbox showing what the new privilege string will be,
e.g.:

Reader + Developer == uv (in the read-only textbox)

This would require some JavaScript; however, I'm not confident in my
ability to write JavaScript portable enough to work on most
browsers.

Ah, good. It might be a combination of this particular setup/user which is
hiding it from me.

That's doable - we just need to associate the perms letter with each
checkbox, and each time one is updated, create a string from the selected
ones. With jQuery, this type of thing is practically a one-liner, without
it, probably a 20-liner. But nonetheless not difficult. Tonight is movie
night, and tomorrow i'm out of town for the day, but i've added this to my
TODOs.

It is used, just not on the Anonymous user:

http://fossil.bradfords.org:8080/setup_uedit?id=4

This is perhaps because while looking at the Anonymous user, you have
the checkboxes...

The whole problem with that view for me is that the font is a lot smaller than
unifed view, which I prefer and fine more readable on the whole anyway.

Movie's over...

Please try this out:

http://www.fossil-scm.org/index.html/timeline?r=inherit-priv-mark-sub

Not the most efficient solution, but it should do for any relatively recent
(early-21st-century) browser.

What it doesn't do is calculate _derived_ permissions: it only shows the
letters you have explicitly checked, e.g. uv in the above example.
