[Foundation-l] Wikipedia lesson in Maharashtra class 7 textbook ( India)

2011-02-15 Thread CherianTinu Abraham
Maharashtra State SSC syllabus , 7th standard ( Class) has a chapter on
Wikipedia. http://twitpic.com/40b7oj
( See below for more details)
The text book is called Balbarathi and in English.
Note that state syllabus is applicable for most schools in state
of Maharashtra in India.

Some time back I heard Kerala state syllabus also had plans ( already
incorporated ? ) a chapter on Wikipedia in Malayalam...

[Foundation-l] Another 1.17 maintenance window

2011-02-15 Thread Rob Lanphier
( repost from http://techblog.wikimedia.org )

Continuing with the work started last week[1], we plan to deploy 1.17
to more wikis in a couple hours. We had hoped we would be able to
figure out the performance issues in the past week, but unfortunately,
the only practical way we have to see the load problems we witnessed
last week is to put the software into production. We have put a lot
of instrumentation in place to help us diagnose our load issues. We
plan to start the upcoming deployment by rolling out to
nl.wikipedia.org, and do some debugging (rolling back if necessary).
If we’re able to diagnose and fix the problems quickly, we then plan
to roll out 1.17 more widely. If we’re still stumped, we may still
roll out to a few more low-traffic wikis, but leave the high-traffic
sites until we figure this out.

We plan to have more updates and detailed information on the
deployment page on mediawiki.org[2]. Thanks for your patience!

Well - if their terms of use said that the all contributors transfer
the copyrights to Canonical Ltd. - the company can licence such the
content as it wishes and in fact E-mails send to their contributors is
just a matter of their goodwill to be moral toward them.

That's a legitimate viewpoint, but not the one that's informing
StrategyWiki's current use by WMF. Our current use is for StrategyWiki
to be a place to develop and document strategic research (which is an
ongoing process that doesn't end with the five-year plan), where we
can easily refer back to and develop some of the accumulated wisdom on
StrategyWiki, and where we can pick up work using some of the
established practices and processes when necessary (launch a new call
for proposals, build new task forces, etc.). In other words,
StrategyWiki has an identity and a purpose that extends past the
strategic planning process. We may be able to ultimately accomplish
all these things by creating spaces within Meta to do them, importing
supporting tools/namespaces, etc., or within some future wonderful
information architecture, but for the time being, StrategyWiki lives.
:-) The FAQ, on the other hand, definitely did not belong there.

I've commented a bit more on the issue of merging wikis in this post,
and the same arguments apply here:

 Messaggio Originale
Oggetto: Ubuntu Wiki to be re-licensed to CC BY-SA
Data: Tue, 15 Feb 2011 21:39:08 + (UTC)
Da: Ubuntu Community Council
A: undisclosed-recipients:;

Dear Contributor to the Ubuntu Wiki,

We are contacting you because you have contributed content to the Ubuntu
wiki at http://wiki.ubuntu.com.

The license of content of the Ubuntu Wiki has always been publically
listed as copyright Canonical Ltd. Working with the Ubuntu Community
Council, Canonical has decided to transition the content in the Ubuntu
Wiki to the the CC-BY-SA license[1]. This license is a free culture
license[2] and is the same license used both by the Ubuntu Documentation
wiki [3] since 2007 [4] and by Wikipedia.

If you are happy with the idea of this transition for the content you
have provided, you do not need to do anything. If you have problems or
issues, please read the feedback section below and contact us.

The rest of this message provides a rationale, details, and information
on providing feedback.

= Decision =

After discussion among the Ubuntu Community Council, it has been decided
that the material on the Ubuntu wiki should be licensed under a free
license, CC-by-SA[1]. The Ubuntu wiki will be changed to make this clear
to those creating or editing pages, and of course external links from
the Wiki to material under other licences will continue to be welcome.

This decision is not intended in any way to underestimate the value of
contributions, but rather to ensure that the material on the wiki
complies with the same standards of openness as the Ubuntu project as a
whole.

= Rationale =

The Ubuntu wiki is a collaborative resource, and the product of the
Ubuntu community as a whole. Its content, put together by many
contributors with different knowledge and points of view, is immensely
valuable to us all. Unfortunately, at the moment, there is no clear
definition of what rights contributors to the content retain over the
material that they post, or the extent to which other persons are
entitled to copy or modify the material. For example, it would be very
useful to ensure that community contributed content may be shared by
many teams without complex licensing issues, ensuring that those working
on content can concentrate on producing the best information possible
rather than legal negotiations.

Furthermore, consistent with Ubuntu's philosophy, it is important that
material created for use on the Ubuntu wiki be available for other
communities outside ours to benefit from. Using an open license on the
Ubuntu wiki allows other communities to re-use material which may be
useful to them under terms which are widely recognised in the free
software community.

= Feedback =

We would again like to make a good-faith attempt to ensure that
contributors of existing material are happy with this change. We invite
any contributors who have any questions or concerns about this plan to
contact us at . Given that the
re-licensing of http://help.ubuntu.com/community was fairly
uncontroversial and since the aim to re-license the Ubuntu wiki at some
point later has not brought up any objections, we hope that contributors
will welcome it.

In the absence of a substantial number of objections, this change will
be made to the Ubuntu wiki after approximately one month.

More details can be found here:
   https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WikiLicensing

Many thanks for your contributions to the Ubuntu Wiki, and we hope that
you will continue to help!

= Exceptions =
If you want to license a code snippet on the wiki under another open
source license [5], please specify the relevant license in the snippet
itself. In the event that no license is specified, the license
applicable to the code snippet would be the same as that applicable to
any other material on the wiki.

The end is the achievement of Wikimedia's vision and the movement's
priorities of increasing participation and reach. India represents a
significant share of all human beings and a larger share of all human beings
living in a relatively free and uncensored environment.

We had very few candidates from the Wikimedia community apply, so in the
end most of the candidates we were looking at had some familiarity, but that
was limited and didn't differentiate them from each other in a way that was
meaningful vs. other dimension such as the ability to design and implement
national scale programs or the ability to work in an environment with a
range of stakeholders. These dimensions were big differentiators.

I raised this question in the Hebrew Wikipedia Village Pump. All the
people who replied–female, male and of unknown gender–were generally
in favor of implementing such a thing.

As it often happens in Wikipedia, the discussion veered off into
proposals to change the translation of the word "User" itself into
something else, such as "Editor", "Contributor", "Participant", etc.,
but even then, all the proposals were m/f pairs.

Well, I don't know if you knew that you can "cheat" stats.grok putting the

for example, gives you the stats of it wikisource main page.
So there must be logs somewhere (I just don't know where ;-),
even if you can't use directly the form.

I've moved this FAQ to Meta-Wiki:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/FAQ_Consultancy_for_National_Programs,_India

Meta-Wiki is the project coordination wiki (and has been for pretty much the
past decade). I consider the strategy wiki to be dead. It's full of noise
like "Wikimedia-pedia" that nobody is interested in and it doesn't need to
be in everyone's way. The purpose of the strategy wiki was to create a
five-year plan. That purpose has been served, so it's now time to move any
remaining content to Meta-Wiki and move on. (There seems to be fairly
widespread agreement about this on this mailing list and elsewhere.)

I've also updated the contractors page at Meta-Wiki:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_contractors

Thank you, Barry, for creating the FAQ and being so detailed in your initial

The strategy wiki was intended to be used to create a five-year strategic

[Foundation-l] Announcing Hisham Mundol as WMF consultant for National Programs, India

2011-02-15 Thread Barry Newstead
Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Hisham Mundol as a consultant to
the Wikimedia Foundation to support us in our program initiatives in India.

As you know, the Wikimedia Foundation declared India to be a strategic
priority during the strategic planning process [1]. I announced our plans
for the formation of an office in August 2010 and the Wikimedia Foundation
Board of Trustees approved the creation of the Wikimedia India chapter in
June 2010. India is a priority for the Wikimedia movement as it has a strong
and growing community of Wikimedians building the Indic and English language
projects. It is a country where the Wikimedia movement can achieve our
mission and learn important lessons for achieving impact elsewhere. The
engagement of Hisham will enable the Wikimedia Foundation to pilot new
initiatives aimed at accelerating the growth of the community in India. I am
very happy we’ve now reached this point.

As I have mentioned in the past, we have a lot of momentum in India but we
have a long way to go to achieve our full potential as a movement. Indians
represent 4% of the world’s Internet users today (and this share is
growing), yet they only represent 1.5% of page edits on Wikipedia. We should
be able to rapidly increase this share - across all projects - and expand
readership in a corresponding fashion.

Hisham’s title will be Consultant, India National Programs. He will report
to me. His role will be to design and implement specific pilot programs
that encourage many more Indians to become contributors to our projects in
Indic languages as well as English. The National Programs initiative will
focus on the following areas in the first year:

   -

Design and implement an India-wide program to increase Wikimedia’s
footprint on university and college campuses with students and faculty with
the aim of encouraging contributions to Wikimedia projects
-

Support the launch and implementation of community-initiated programs
that seek to increase the editor base for Wikimedia projects
-

Engage with the community and chapter to build a strong relationship
among these stakeholder groups and create communications forums that allow
   for effective partnerships

As a newcomer to the Wikimedia movement, Hisham’s first task will be to
deepen his understanding of us: our history, goals, values, culture and
mission. To that end, he will be spending the coming weeks (not months!) in
learning mode: Hisham and I will be meeting with community members in
Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore on Feb 23-25 and then Hisham will join community
meetings across the country as they occur. Hisham will also spend time in
San Francisco with the staff of the Wikimedia Foundation, as well as with
other like-minded individuals and organizations and he will attend the
chapter conference in Berlin.

Hisham will be creating a workspace on strategy wiki where he will share
what he is learning and develop the core elements of the action plan going
forward. We encourage active community engagement on this wiki. We aim to
move to action quickly and welcome input and guidance from across the
community.

Hisham was most recently a consultant with the Public Health Foundation of
India (in a partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation). He
designed and implemented large-scale national programs on HIV/AIDS
prevention. He worked to understand the dynamics of hard-to-reach
communities by conducting in-depth, on-the-ground analysis (ask him to tell
you about his experience talking to drivers while sitting under their
trucks). The programs he designed and implemented sought to convince people
in large numbers - 400 million young people across the nation - to change
very personal behaviours. While we are not tackling issues of such an
intimate nature, we do aim to convince large numbers of people across the
country to contribute their personal time to Wikimedia projects. During
this assignment, Hisham worked closely with public, private and community
groups (local and international) to work through the details of the programs
and build partnerships for implementing them at scale. He did so in a manner
that used persuasion rather than power to build support to move things
forward. We think his experience navigating these varied groups position
him well to work in the Wikimedia community. His earlier career was in
marketing and business development with a number of well-known businesses:
Infosys, Accenture, Cadbury and Unilever. This experience positions him well
to engage with a movement and organization that is global in nature, in
particular to work with a team that is based halfway around the world.

We have scheduled an IRC chat with Hisham and myself for Thursday, February
17 at 22:00 India Standard Time (16:30 UTC).

I want to thank everyone who helped in the selection process that identified
Hisham. It was a five month process in which we made an open call for
consultants (usi

Something must be wrong with this stat counter.

Back in 2009, Main Page was getting two million views per month, more or
less

http://knol.google.com/k/will-johnson/most-popular-wikipedia-pages/4hmquk6fx
4gu/191#view

This counter show an amazing drop off if its now only getting about 12,000
views per month based on this weekly figure here

Wow, this is really useful.

In this moment for the Spanish Wikipedia "Ronaldo" and "Hipotiroidismo" are 5th
and 6th respectivelly; Ronaldo has just announced his retirement from football
because of health problems related to hypothyroidism.

404 error on top of the English Wikipedia?

Cheers,
Mariano.-

[Foundation-l] Partnership Wikimedia France / Palace of Versailles

2011-02-15 Thread Adrienne Alix
Hello,

I am very pleased to announce today that Wikimedia France has just concluded
a very nice partnership. A partnership with the Palace of
Versailles,
which was negotiated very discreetly (at the request of Versailles) and just
publicly announced this morning.

http://www.wikimedia.fr/partenariat-avec-le-ch%C3%A2teau-de-versailles

This partnership is a consequence of the first Glam -partnerships signed by
Wikimedia France in 2010 and glam-wiki Paris in December 2010.

The partnership prompt Wikimedia France and Versailles to work together to
perform "production and dissemination of cultural and scientific data on the
Wikimedia projects". That means working together to release the content from
the cultural riches of Versailles in the projects. This can be taking
pictures, digitization, video, other things, everything is open.

Under this partnership, Versailles therefore allowed a "Wikimedian in
residence". Its mission is:

* Teaching the teams of the Castle and the Centre for Research,
including scientists, about how Wikimedia projects work and how valuable
they are ;
* Increasing the awareness of the Castle audience about Wikimedia
projects, their functioning and value ;

* Identifying existing articles on the Palace of Versailles, its art and
its heritage, people and events etc.
* Improve and facilitate a community of editors to improve these
articles ;

* Working with the education department on similar topics.

Benoit - [[user:Trizek]] - , the "wikimedian in residence", will have a
great leeway to set up projects with the contributors of the projects, with
the public, to publicize the Wikimedia projects, raise awareness even within
Versailles, and enriching the projects. Benoît will work on engaging
Wikimedians from all projects and from all countries in this effort to bring
together Wikimedia and Versailles resources.

This is a great opportunity for Wikimedia France to advance our projects,
and to make both the cultural and general public more aware of our work. The
prestige of Versailles is incomparable and their willingness to open is very
valuable.
