Bonjour,

Re: [Foundation-l] Advertising on Wikipedia

2011-01-23 Thread Pascal Martin

Hello,

First, let me say that we have taken down the offending link.

But let me now correct some of your assertions.
You say: this company is making money off display ads and it is
through one of these links that your niece came across an adult site.

These are not advertising links. Click-throughs do not generate
revenues for Linterweb.

The links are generated by our twitter-search algorithm which we are
putting in place in order to return interesting up-to-the-minute
results around search terms. You can an example of this twitter search
service here:
http://wikiwix.com/index.php?lang=frdisp=!twitter%2Ffr%2Faction=sarkozy

The basic idea is that we want to show users material that is recent
and fresh around their search term of interest. We're working on the
algorithm still, and the fact that it sometimes produces results like
this one demonstrates that we need to do more work on it. In the
meantime, we have disabled the feature.

Yours, Pascal Martin

 Bonjour,

 http://wikiwix.com/index.php?lang=frdisp=!twitter%2Ffr%2Faction=sarkozy

 Cordialement

The integration of this search engine into wikipedia (which seems to be a
very lucrative deal for this company) is just one of the problems. The ads
that I've mentioned are unacceptable (escort girl = prostitution). I will
never see such kind of ads on Google. And there is a big difference between
Google, Bing and this company. The two first major companies are sending you
the majority of your trafic. This little company is only making business by
monetizing the trafic that Wikipedia send to them.

The second problem is the cache system. I don't understand why the French
Wikipedia is using their commercial cache system instead of the Internet
Archive which 1) is a well known non profit organization and 2) has been
advocating for free content for a long time and 3) doesn't show ads at all.

I thought about this more,
It would be to extract a list of all pages that are included as ref
in the WP. We would use this for the search engine.
we should also make sure that all referenced pages (not linked ones)
are stored in archive.org or someplace permanent.
I wonder if there is some API to extract this list easily?

You could see them on all the french article :

just click on archive.

When a link is making we storage the content in real time after the link is
making.

If you need more information you could contact us on freenode on the chanel

Dear teun,

Linterweb is working around the wikipedia before 2007 :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia
So i am sure we will be online in the futur :)

Looks like:
http://wikiwix.com
http://okawix.com

Not a problem, if the source changes there is no change in our cache, it is
what want the french community.

Now we are working in feature , to add a parameter in the link wich needs
frequently update.

Sincerely
Pascal

This looks like a solid organization. Solid in the sense that it wont
 go suddenly offline.

Such links may be valuable for:
 - article references to sources, in case the source goes offline
 - article references to sources, in case thesource changes its content
 - media copies when the source changes or removes a license

I took a look at the example in the french wiki, and didnt spot a date
in the archive reference. If the source changes its content, this may
 pose a problem.

 kind regards,
 teun

making it more of a stock photo repository

 Hoi,
Blogger is the platform I use now for many years to blog about the
 subjects
that are important in my appreciation of a Wiki world. At first I did not
illustrate my blogposts but thanks to Pfctdayelise I started to pepper my
 blog posts with illustrations.

At this moment it is no longer possible for me to upload pictures to
blogger. The message that I get is that I have to ensure that I have a
license for the pictures that I upload. This is true for pictures that I
have downloaded from Commons and cropped, it is for screen shots of the
interaction with the Blogger user interface..

It is possible for me to get pictures displayed when I refer to the upload
page of a Commons picture but that does me no good when it is a svg
 picture.
Obviously I can download the picture and save it as an png ... but that
 does
 me no good.

There are several solutions to this problem. I can upload the png, I can
use Wordpress instead. The obvious solution is for Google to get its act
 together.

The solution that I like best is for Commons to become a true repository
 of
images that is not only intended for the illustration of Wikipedia and its
sister projects but also for the illustration of blogs like mine. Commons
 is
my first choice for illustrations for my blog but for some topics it just
does not provide me with the illustration that I am looking for.

I think that Commons has already many images that are usable, what would
 be
needed is just a different kind of pictures or more pictures that are
grouped by subject and easier to find.
 Thanks,
 GerardM

Why would anybody want to buy it if it is possible to download it for
 free?

download is impractical, it takes too long.
Often you want it offline, when no internet-connection is available.

Or you want to have a fixed version, not overwritten by updates.

Or you want to have it in case it stops and goes offline and is maybe no
 longer available
 one day.

The German version is being sold in Germany, but not the larger English
 version.
