[Foundation-l] Video of the Foundation's Metrics Activities meeting for February (Re: Wikimedia Foundation Report, February 2012)

 Hi all,

please find below the WMF report for February 2012, in plain text.

As always, the editable and formatted version is on Meta:

and the reports are posted on the Wikimedia blog, too:
 https://blog.wikimedia.org/c/corporate/wmf-monthly-reports/

Since a few months, we have been publishing a separate Highlights
summary. Please consider helping non-English-language communities to
stay updated, by providing a translation:
 https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Highlights,_February_2012

Many thanks to those who translated last month's Highlights into
Arabic, Danish, French, Hungarian, Italian, Dutch and Vietnamese.

While still focussing on WMF activities, the Highlights include a
small selection of the most noteworthy events from the whole movement.
Suggestions for the upcoming Febuary issue are welcome at

As last time, the monthly Metrics Activities meeting at the WMF
office has been recorded on video. The recording should become
available on Commons within a few days.

The upload has now completed and the video is at

2012-03-09 Thread Tilman Bayer
/Commons:Public_art_and_copyrights_in_the_US.
Both Commons and the English Wikipedia have also been struggling
with questions related to international copyright. In January,
Commons approached us about a recent US court decision which may
impact thousands of images hosted on Commons. The research produced
by the legal interns is published in the community deletion
discussion

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/All_files_copyrighted_in_the_US_under_the_URAA#Legal_team.27s_statement.
The English Wikipedia is attempting to reach a consensus for
handling content that is public domain in the United States because
the United States does not have copyright relations with the country
in which it was published. Our intern's work is published as part of
that discussion

Re: [Foundation-l] Communicating effectively: Wikimedia needs clear language now

2012-02-18 Thread Tilman Bayer
think I'm particularly stupid or uninformed.
Nor do I think that the people who write in the manner I've described
do it consciously. But we do need to fix it. If well-educated,
informed native English speakers struggle with learnings and
accountabilities and so on, what about those who don't natively speak
English? When people see sloppy, buzzword-driven language, they wonder
if this reflects sloppy, buzzword-driven thinking, or perhaps
obfuscation. Clear writing signals the opposite: clear thinking and
 transparency.

I'm not suggesting we all need to write as if we're editing Simple
English Wikipedia. But just cut out the buzzwords and write plainly
and straightforwardly like the best writing on Wikipedia.

What can be done about this?

There seem to be two possible solutions to this problem: one involves
hiring a dominatrix with a linguistics degree to wander the San
Francisco office with handcuffs, a bullwhip, a number of live gerbils
and plentiful supplies of superglue, and given free reign to enforce
the rules in whatever way she deems fit.

Minus the sexual fantasies, a lot of this is already going on at the
Foundation. Among the various communications people who help
Foundation employees/contractors to inform the community and the
public about their work, by reviewing and editing reports or blog
posts before they are published, there are in fact longtime
Wikipedians like our Technical Communications Manager Guillaume (cf.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikimedia_Blog/Guidelinesdiff=nextoldid=2651649#No_puffing
) and myself (whose edit summaries on Wikipedia frequently include
links to [[WP:PEACOCK]] ;). I'm not saying there is no room for
improvement, but there is a lot of that stuff which doesn't make it
into the published versions that you see.

 The other, which involves far
fewer embarrassing carpet stains, is to empower the community to fix
these problems. Have a nice little leaderboard on Meta, and encourage
community members to be bold, fix up bad writing, bad grammar and
buzzwords. Reward their efforts with barnstars and the occasional
thank you messages on talk pages.

Commit to clear writing by adopting a policy of copyediting almost
always welcome for chapter wikis, Foundation documents and as close
 to everything as possible.

You mean something like the conspicuous notice saying You are more
than welcome to edit this report for the purposes of usefulness,
presentation, etc that has been included on the top of each of the
Foundation's monthly reports on Meta for almost two years now
(https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Report,_April_2010
) ?

There are volunteers in the movement who
happily spend hour after hour copyediting on Wikipedia and Wikinews
and Wikibooks and so on. Give them the opportunity to fix up the
language used by the Foundation and the chapters.

As exemplified above, for many texts published by the Foundation, this
opportunity is already there (even those on Meta which do not carry
that explicit invitation are on a wiki for a reason). And even on the
closed Foundation wiki, many volunteers have editing rights and help
out with exactly the sort of thing you describe (example from this
week: https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Draft/Staff_titles ).

So I think it is more about motivating volunteers to take up this
opportunity, rather than creating it. In fact, let me use the occasion
and thank the volunteers who have copyedited or corrected the WMF
monthly reports on Meta since I took over the task of publishing them
in August, who include Tony1, Graham87, Ainali, Peteforsyth, Mike
Peel, Jeremyb, Rich Farmbrough, Akaniji and yourself.

Remember: how can community members support and become more deeply
involved with the work of the chapters and the Foundation if they
can't understand what you are saying?

While I don't find all of your examples convincing, I fully endorse
your goal in general and am in fact grateful for your email for
entirely selfish reasons: It has the potential to facilitate my work a
bit by providing valuable ammunition ;)

 - and we're in process of hiring a Director of HR and
restructuring roles until the HR director comes on board. We have vision
of an effective, smooth, and supportive department. As Gayle gets her

communicating to the organization about them.

Jeanie Mayall started last September, gracefully taking on a great
number of tasks when Daniel left. She is accepting a position as a
Manager of HR with a start-up down the street. In the last few months,
she has handled open enrollment with great success, immigration issues,

tax issues. She has agreed to be accessible on an ongoing basis and we
are working to proactively transition open issues.

Personal perspectives are perhaps not very suitable for the official

regularly since a while and they're a very good way to know what's going

Just a quick note that the final proof has not been sent to the
printer yet; last-minute corrections to the printed version are still
possible today. I had set up an Etherpad to collect these at
http://etherpad.wikimedia.org/Ar201011fixes - at the moment, it only
contains the Janvier typo and one concerning the Arabic name for
Wikimedia Israel. Were you aware of other examples? Corrections to the
wiki versions will continue to be most welcome - it's part of their
 raison d'être.

 Hi Tilman,
I do have something to add. I can't make the edit on etherpad via my mobile,
 my apologies in advance:
One of the donors is listed as Abdulla Al-Thani (whom I suppose is from
Qatar). Unfortunately, this name is quite confusing for me since there are
many people in the Qatari royal family who have the same name. Some include
Abdullah (bin Khalid) Al Thani and Abdullah (bin Khalif) Al Thani -- both of
whom are part of the Qatari government. I'm guessing that the person who
donated this money is Abdulla bin Ali Al Thani (from Qatar Foundation). It
might be good to indicate his middle name as well in the donors list, to
 avoid confusion.
 --Abbas.

Hi Abbas,

thanks for the interesting explanation, I agree that the middle name
could be quite relevant information. We looked into the matter, but
eventually there wasn't a sufficient basis at this point for changing
the name from the one that the donor gave us, or otherwise specifying
his identity further. (Respecting the WMF's donor privacy is quite
important. For example we also had to take care to honor the requests
of those few donors who did not wish to for their name to be
publicized, they are listed as Anonymous in the report.)

I have two points I would like see to happen in the process of the

[Foundation-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Translations of September 2011 Wikimedia Highlights available in العربية (Arabic), Deutsch (German), Italiano (Italian), 日本語 (Japanese)

2011-11-03 Thread Tilman Bayer
Hi,

as mentioned in last week's announcement of the September 2011
Wikimedia Foundation report, this time we published a separate
Highlights summary, combining excerpts from the general report and
the engineering report. It's an experiment, a format which might be
useful for those who might find the full reports long to read, and it
facilitates translations.

Several translations are now available (help is welcome in spreading them):

Thanks to all translators! Translations can still be added at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Highlights,_September_2011

As said above, this is an experiment, so it would be nice to hear how
useful the result is to people, and what could be improved.

I would also like to take the occasion to draw attention to
Wikimedia:Woche, an new weekly newsletter run by the German
Wikimedia chapter, summarizing news from the whole movement in German
language
(http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/vereinde-l/2011-September/005121.html
). To my knowledge it is the first initiative of its kind by a
chapter (of course there are already volunteer-run publications such
as the Signpost, Wikizine and Kurier).

I'm not subscribed to the announcements list. The idea was that
everything that goes to the announcements list would also go here (as

supposed to be automatic, but I think there were some problems getting
it to work. Could someone have another go? There must be some way to

creating a new email address that just forwards everything to

It might just be me, but I think the forwarding only works if one is
subscribed to the foundation-l list with the e-mail address he uses
 for the wikimediaannounce-l.
(At least I got a notice that the letter I sent to WA-l just now was
 rejected due to spam.)
Thanks for the heads-up, we'll look into it - could you forward me the
rejection notice offlist?
(For other readers: We are talking about rejection by Foundation-l.
The WikimediaAnnounce-l copy of the letter went through just fine:
