Re: It's time again for pants nominations

2018-05-31 Thread Carlos Soriano
Thanks Nirbheek :)

I think the rule is because the board choose them, so me being on the board
would stop that.

In any case, I got enough credit for the GitLab effort (thanks all), it's
my hope that the pants goes to someone else that has done as much or more
for GNOME but goes more unnoticed.

Cheers

Hi,

How do you intend to ensure that the Foundation expansion occurs in a
sustainable manner? It would be unfortunate if this donation becomes
just a temporary windfall.

Board of Directors Elections 2018 - Candidacy - Robert McQueen

2018-05-31 Thread Robert McQueen
Name: Robert McQueen

Corporate Affiliation: Endless
IRC, Twitter, etc: ramcq

Dear Foundation members,

I would like to put my name forward as a candidate to serve as a
director on the GNOME Board in 2018/19.

I’ve been a GNOME and freedesktop.org technical contributor in one form
or another for around 13 years. Most recently I've become the main
sysadmin behind the Flathub "app store" and build service for distro-
agnostic Linux desktop software. I believe Flatpak is the most
promising and commercially-agnostic technology to allow the free
desktop to provide a stable target for both FOSS and commercial app
developers, without harming our ability as a community to innovate on
the core OS and desktop.

Professionally, I have worked on the commercial adoption of GNOME and
our technologies for almost as long. Originally as the founder and CTO
of Collabora, and currently as the VP of Deployment at Endless, I've
worked on 8 (at least!) different commercial platforms based on the
GNOME stack, across a range of desktop, mobile and other embedded
industry segments. I sat on the GNOME Advisory Board for several years
while I was at Collabora, and have appeared there on behalf of Endless
on a few occasions.

I think the combination of my professional background and direct
technical contributions gives me a great perspective on what makes for
successful cooperation between Free Software projects and commercial
entities from both sides. I would like to use my experience as a
manager and a company executive to contribute to the project in non-
technical ways. I believe I can help the GNOME Board adopt a more
supervisory role, while the GNOME Foundation can take advantage of its
recently-pledged donation, experienced ED, and initiatives such as the
GNOME Internships to get more actively involved in both project
activities and fundraising programmes than was previously possible.

In terms of my agenda, I would like to see the Foundation use its
resources to continue to pushing for the important software freedom
priorities that brought the project together. For example, GNOME should
produce a desktop which is a first-class home for developers and other
creators, without corporate restrictions on what can be built or for
whom. It’s more important than ever that the GNOME project gets support
to provide a desktop for all, which respects users privacy and allows
people to control their data without undue corporate influence or
intrusion. Some of this work is best addressed in a non-profit context
to ensure the individual user freedom remains paramount.

That said, as well the importance of remaining true to its goals, I
believe that a Free Software project needs a diversity of users and
contributors to stay healthy and impactful. I would love to see the
GNOME Foundation continue to build on and expand the commercial
partnerships that it has, to ensure that there are many robust
partnerships which help to further GNOME’s mission and reach as many
people as possible with our free desktop.

Thanks for your time considering my candidacy, and I hope to have the
opportunity to serve the Foundation members as a director on the Board.

Many Thanks,
Rob

Board of Directors Elections 2018 – Candidacy – Benjamin Berg

2018-05-31 Thread Benjamin Berg
Full name: Benjamin Berg
Email: benja...@sipsolutions.net
Corporate affiliation: Red Hat

I have decided to submit my candidacy for the Foundation Board as I
feel that the Board has not been able to sufficiently represent me in
the last few years.

The Foundation needs to empower individuals in their work on GNOME and
in the community. As every project, GNOME has its share of issues, and
we always need to work on identifying and understanding them. Only then
can we work on improving ourselves, our policies, our community and the
software we create. In the end, GNOME is about software, and it is
through this software that we improve the lives of millions of people
worldwide who rely on all of us every day. The interest to advance
GNOME is what unites us as a project, independent of each person's
motivations.

Some issues I see and some ideas about them:
 * Accessibility:
As far as I know we currently still have major accessibility issues
on Wayland. This is one issue that may need to be addressed with the
Advisory Board and possibly an area for which we can use Foundation
   money.
 * Community:
The Foundation membership seems to have declined in recent years.
Numbers go down from 349 (2011) to 252 (2016) to 236 (today, current
   list on the website).
This one has no easy solution but it is an issue that the Board will
need to face in some way. I don't think we can consider it a success
if we use the recent donation to boost our spendings if our
membership stagnates at the same time.
 * Project Management:
I believe that GNOME is currently lacking a strategy and
coordination. To a certain degree this is expected considering the
   individual freedoms that maintainers enjoy.
However, the Foundation could likely become more active in
coordinating the long term development of the project. Strategies
could include facilitating meetings between Advisory Board members
or creating a separate team for the purpose of project planning.
We need a forum where larger development efforts can be efficiently
   coordinated.

I do believe GNOME has a large impact on the (F/LOSS) world. Lets make
sure we remain relevant for years to come.

Benjamin

Board of Directors Elections 2018 - Candidacy - Allan Day

2018-05-31 Thread Allan Day

Corporate affiliation: Red Hat

Hi all,

I'm announcing my candidacy for the upcoming Board of Directors
elections. I've served on the board since 2015. If I were elected, it
would be my forth term on the board.

I feel that I've been an effective member of the board during my time
as a director. My achievements include:

 * Serving as vice-president and recently as secretary. I've also
acted as line manager for our Executive Director.
 * Helping to set up the legal and financial arrangements so we could hire Neil
 * Doing a fair bit of work on our Advisory Board meeting preparations
 * Documenting a lot of our procedures and policies, particularly
around trademarks and expenditure

Were I to be elected, I'd have the following priorities as a director:

 * Foundation expansion. The big news is that, thanks to the amazing
support of an anonymous donor, the Foundation will soon be in a
position to expand its operations. This will be a major shift for both
the Foundation and the GNOME project. My priority will be to ensure
that we establish an environment in which new staff members and
contractors can fulfil their maximum potential. I'll also work to
ensure that the Foundation continues to be transparent and fully
integrated with the GNOME community, as it expands.

 * Policy-making and transparency. Over the past year, the Foundation
Board has worked to take a more legislative approach, so that we are
increasingly setting policies and budgets rather than making lots of
one-off decisions. However, there is a lot of work still to do - our
existing policies can be improved, and it's not always easy to find
out which policies exist.

 * Code of conduct. I'm committed to ensuring that initiatives in this
area are supported by the Board of Directors. I'm aware that this can
be a divisive issue and I want to make sure that it is handled in as
an inclusive and fair manner as possible.

I'm not sure that I'll be able to find the time to make substantial
contributions to the Foundation, but I can commit to doing the
necessary routine work.

I should note that I'm unable to attend GUADEC this year, so won't be
able to attend the annual in-person meetings.

Thanks,

Allan

member of the Foundation Board of Directors.I have been a Foundation Member
since 2011. I joined after participating in the second round of the
Outreachy (formerly Outreach Program for Women) internships. This year I
worked on an initiative with the Mozilla Foundation's Open Source Clubs to
teach college students to contribute to GNOME. We are currently working on
setting up A/B testing using the Newcomers Guide, and in the coming year we
will continue to work with clubs on campuses to study how to best interest,
educate, and retain new contributors. I am particularly excited about this
initiative since it will provide us with in-depth data about how to engage
and retain contributors.I have also worked this year on various trademark
and licensing issues, finding grants to provide the community with more
servers, and negotiating a contract with MapBox so GNOME Maps can avoid
future service interruptions. If I am reelected I hope to continue to work
on increasing diversity and making GNOME a welcoming project for everyone.
There are many changes coming as a result of the new influx of grants, and
the resultant expansion. I hope to help provide continuity through the
changes, and to represent the best interests of the community in the coming
year.Thanks,Meg*

Candidacy statement for the GNOME Foundation Board of Directors - Didier Roche

2018-05-31 Thread Didier Roche

Name: Didier Roche
Email: didro...@gnome.org
Corporate affiliation: Canonical

Hello everyone,

I've served on the Foundation Board of Directors for half a year now,
filling a vacant position, and would like to continue for 2018-19.

I am a GNOME user since 2004 and starting packaging GNOME in Ubuntu
starting 2008. I've submitted and contributed some patches over the
years, while staying close to the french GNOME conspiracy, participating
at local events and attending GUADEC.

More recently, I've helped on the migration from Unity to GNOME Shell in
Ubuntu and blogged about it in a series of posts to inform both our
users and the GNOME folks about our decisions: why we did some tweaking,
which kind of experience we deliver ensuring that we still provide a
vanilla GNOME session experience as well…

I feel that I can continue on the Board of Directors adding a positive
impact, especially in the following sectors:

* Travel policy and sponsorship
I'm acting as a liaison to the Travel Committee for some months now.
There is a lot to do to make our process more flexible and easier for
everyone (requesters for sponsorship and Travel Committee members). We
started working on it, but it needs refinements, and we have some plan
of actions going this way (see the recent board meeting minutes about it).

* Development CI and infrastructure
This is something which I didn't participate yet on the GNOME side, but
which is dear to my heart. I have extensive experience in this area for
other projects, like ubuntu Touch, where I built the CI process to
deliver hundreds of projects to the distribution archive. I think a
solid CI, backed by systematic unit and integration testing is a must
have and a gap we have to fill, building on the step of continous.
Gitlab provided us a serious first step in the right direction
throughout that process, helping on peer reviews, code contributions. I
think ensuring that breaking the general build is something that is
immediately seen by the whole community as a read flag, and help
transitions, is the next major step in that direction.

The expansion of the foundation will surely trigger some great
challenges, but it's exciting to be part of it when those kinds of
fundamental shift is happening.

Cheers,
Didier Roche
