I agree with Neil here. Discourse doesn't look like the right place
for automated notifications.

Couldn't Damned Lies allow for translators to individually subscribe
for notifications and get these emails sent directly to them?

I know this requires someone to implement the feature, but I think it
is of our general interest, so maybe we could request some funding for
it. In the past we had an Outreachy intern working on integrating
GTranslator with Damned Lies, maybe that same intern would be
interested in working on this.

Sign-up to mentor an Outreachy project by September 15

2021-09-03 Thread Felipe Borges
Hi everyone,

The GNOME Foundation has confirmed funding for three spots in
Outreachy for the December 2021 round!

If you would like to mentor this round, please head to
https://www.outreachy.org/outreachy-december-2021-internship-round/communities/gnome/submit-project/
as soon as possible and submit your project idea.

All project ideas need to be added in the Outreachy’s application
system by mentors and approved by the triage committee (Matthias
Clasen, Allan Day, and Sriram Ramkrishna) and coordinators (me) by
September 15.

Because GNOME only usually has a few participants in Outreachy, we are
looking to offer projects that are most strategic for GNOME. These
include, but are not limited to, projects in the area of privacy, GTK,
core experience, core applications, developer experience, and
development infrastructure. More information about GNOME’s
participation in Outreachy is available at Outreach/Outreachy - GNOME
Wiki! .

If you have any questions, please feel free to reply to this thread,
in our discourse topic*, or e-mail soc-adm...@gnome.org (which is a
private mailing list with the GNOME internship coordinators).

Fwd: It's time again for pants nominations

2018-05-30 Thread Felipe Borges
I nominate Carlos Garnacho.

Carlos has been actively part of our community for more than (I
believe) 15 years. He has been involved in various projects that
interact with very different components of our stack: Gtk+, Tracker,
Mutter, Wayland, you name it! He has also collaborated with apps that
consume his backend work, such as GNOME Music and the other core apps
(sharing his Tracker expertise). Contributing not only in code, Carlos
has mentored and co-mentored outreach students in GSoC and Outreachy,
and has been always very helpful with newcomers. He has attended many
of our conferences and is one of the most cherished members of our
community.

Yes, I have used the service to send money abroad and it works just
fine with lower fees than the standard options. I also have a friend
(fellow GNOME user) that works there and I could reach to help us out
if necessary.

I fully endorse this initiative. It is coherent with our recent
foundation statement on the immigration ban[0], and more importantly
it would allow many more foundation members to attend (including
myself).

Thanks for the suggestion, I hope that this idea is taken into consideration.

I agree with Meg, first and foremost we need to identify the reasoning
behind not so many people launching candidacies.

Addressing directly the $SUBJECT, I personally believe that despite
the lack of candidates, a transition of responsibilities is key for a
wealthy system. It gives new people a chance to push their ideas,
prevents the creation of privileges, and gives credibility to the
voters. I acknowledge that the board power is somehow limited and it
is often just "representative", but even in this matters I would
always welcome an alternation of members in a short period.
