Re: Alternative Displays

2000-10-19 Thread Neil Martin

Foxboro's touchscreen CRTs have a touchscreen unit in them that is made by
MicroTouch. Foxboro has someone outfit the CRTs with the touchscreens.
Even more difficult is the thought that I believe the touchscreen
controller is not located in the CRT chassis. I believe it is located in
the GCIO. You will need to deal with someone that can provide a CRT that
has touchscreen hardware in it that is compatible with the GCIO.

Foxboro screens (historically) are actually made by Sony Corp. You
might be able to find replacements there, although will not be
supported if you have a service contract.

When we converted to I/A about six years ago, we got the big Sony monitors
with the touch screen option. They are great to work with and the
operators
really like them. Apparently they have a life span of about six years of
continuous use. We have burned out seven of them in the past three months
and at this rate I don't expect the rest of them to last much longer. I've

got 15 more displays to replace. Soon.

I know that there are video display options besides the Foxboro offerings,
but I have yet to see any with a touch screen. Have any of you found a
viable replacement?

Foxboro offers replacements, but $3000 is a lot to pay for a 20" TV set
that
only gets one channel --- even if you can use the screen as a remote.

Get touchscreens from MicroTouch. Foxboro does.

2000-10-19 Thread David Johnson

If I remember correctly, the Foxboro/Sun/Sony monitors were outfitted by
the touchscreen by a third party outfit. I remember seeing their corporate
sticker on some of the touchscreens we bought from Foxboro. I remember

Chuck,

We use the 20 inch Sony monitors model GDM-20E01 with the touch screens. I have found
two different sources that can rebuild the monitors with CRT tubes that each company
manufactures. One is Vartech Displays, Inc. 11301 Industriplex Boulevard Suite 4,
Baton Rouge, LA 70809. Ph 800-223-8050 or 225-298-0300. Web site
www.vartechdisplays.com. The other is Quest International, Inc. 65 Parker, Irvine CA
92618. Phone 800-231-6777. Website www.questinc.com. I haven't looked into finding a
new replacement as of yet only the repair of what we have.

I grabbed the environment from the VT100 window you get from the
tools menu
(any child of the display manager/foxview process gets the extra
environment
variables), saved it as a file and just run it after I log in from
some
other machine (just start a new shell - for example: ksh

I also
added a shortcut to the olwm menu to run a cmdtool with this already
done
for me. I'll look it up for you when I get back on site, if you

List,

Apparently losing things is all the rage now. I have lost my
environment
variables. When I start the cmdtool from the olwm desktop I get all
kinds
of good variables like MANPATH, etc. But when I log in as root from

another machine I just get what is defined in the likes of
/etc/profile,
~/.profile, ~/.cshrc and ~/.login (depending on my shell).

So I am led to believe that these environment variables that appear
in the
cmdtool are inherited from the process that started it. Where does
that
guy get his variables?

Re: Searching for lost environment variables

2000-10-19 Thread Warren Brown

Hi

You don't say explicitly but I assume you mean an AW51.

Since the startup scripts start the olwm on bootup and
the olwm is the parent of the cmdtool, what you are
seeing is the result of all the parent processes
that have led to the olwm startup. Most of the
environment variables are set in S99FOXBORO
in the /etc/rc2.d directory.

Does that help ?

Searching for lost environment variables

2000-10-19 Thread Winston Jenks

List,

Apparently losing things is all the rage now. I have lost my environment
variables. When I start the cmdtool from the olwm desktop I get all kinds
of good variables like MANPATH, etc. But when I log in as root from
another machine I just get what is defined in the likes of /etc/profile,
~/.profile, ~/.cshrc and ~/.login (depending on my shell).

So I am led to believe that these environment variables that appear in the
cmdtool are inherited from the process that started it. Where does that
guy get his variables?
