Subject: RE: PLC Question

List,

I have been meaning to chime in on this topic, but I was stuck on the road
when it was first raised and I have struggling to catch up on a lot of
things ever since.

I have nine overloaded AB30's connected to one PLC-3 that I plan on
updating
to a ControlLogix 5550. This is absurd. I would like to have something
LIKE an AB30 (with no hard drives, moving parts, configure in ICC, ...) but
with
a much larger capacity - like a CP60 communicating over Ethernet to
 ControlLogix.

We have been using the AW51 Integrator as a dedicated Gateway 51's since
the product was introduced. The advantages are that it supports Ethernet
communications to AB PLCs and it utilizes Rockwell's API software
(Interchange) so it is not an entirely Foxboro developed integration
solution. To improve robustness, we try to operate them as dedicated
control stations by limiting other AW functionality performed by the
station. For platform consistency and remote support, we have emphasized the
AW51 Integrator and not the AW70 Int.

Connectivity to Control Logix was achieved by simply loading the latest
version of Interchange (V6.2, not be confused with I/A version) and
configuring the necessary communications daemon. It is very helpful to have
one Foxboro AB integration device that allows communications to CL, PLC5E,
SLC505, or any legacy DH+ based PLC via a Pyramid Integrator or CL gateway.

Yes, applications using Interchange function calls must utilize PLC 5
style addressing when communicating to a CL processor, but this needs only
be done for the data elements that I/A is accessing. The full freedom of
native CL addressing can not really be enjoyed since there is no existing
I/A input/output block that supports mixed data types.

I actually purchased AB Interchange for Solaris and was considering
installing it
when I realized how much maintenance and configuration is required. One of
our plants does us this method and is not happy with the results.

Interchange runs as a pkgadd on Solaris and it really is just a C shared
library that gets linked to cio_cp.csx task that runs in the AW Int. when
the top-level ECB is created. Configuration of the communications daemon
necessary to communicate to CL is straightforward and well documented by AB.
There is no additional maintenance necessary.

There are 3 layers of ECBs to configure, but straightforward and
understandable none the less.

 6. AW51 or AW70 through an Ethernet interface with a third party OPC
software which addresses data in the native ControLogic naming structure.

This is what I will probably have to end up doing. AW51 with a third party
OPC server. I just wish I didn't have go this way. It has a hard drive,
has
to be configured a couple of places instead of one, and I will have to deal
with finger pointing when something goes wrong.

I would be the first person to agree that the utilizing a host box as a
control station is hardly an idealized solution. I consider the current
AW51 Integrator product to be a fairly robust one, but having lived through
it's evolution and Foxboro's ability to support network communication to AB
PLCs, I would not consider a hard drive to be the weakest link of the
implementation. I think that point can easily be balanced by the fact that
an open operating system is available where system and network diagnostics
are available and a fully supported vendor API (Interchange) is able to run.

I would definitely look to reduce product layers/interfaces to reduce the
potential for finger pointing, but I would never implement a system that
would eliminate AB-Rockwell as solution/support provider when the goal is to
communicate to AB PLCs.

Like any other non-fault tolerant control station, it is necessary to manage
the risk that is carried by a single station. The large capacity AW
Integrator station image has a huge equivalent block capability (15,000),
but I would not recommend utilizing it.

My immediate wish is to have the Invensys I/A marketing people recognize the
use of an AW51 Int. as a dedicated PLC gateway and offer pricing for the
functionality utilized and not be penalized for the additional, full AW
functionality that comes bundled with it that I do not use.

A little commentary on the other solutions listed.

 1. AB Integrator 30 to AB 1770-KF2 or 1779-KFL DH+ module in single or
 redundant ControLogix configuration.

Ethernet is the way to go.

 2. AW51 or AW70 with Ethernet interface, FoxBlocks and AB Interchange or
 RSLinx software.

I think the best way to go. Pick your preferred

RE: Remote Displays

2001-09-19 Thread duc . do

Hi Bruce,

Hummingbird eXceed is but one of the possible solutions. We (internal to Dow
Corning) are required to use SCO XVision, and we get pretty good at making
it work also, without the handholding that Foxboro provides with eXceed.
There are other commercial products for remotely displaying X windows.

VNC (http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/) is a freeware solution. Although I
haven't run it on a Solaris box, on my Linux boxes at home, it's pretty
doggy slow. (Perhaps I didn't get it tuned properly.)

RE: RAM

Since I'm not a lawyer (thank God!), I'll leave the contractual nuances and

Speaking of RAM. We just got an estimate for how much Foxboro would charge
to upgrade our 4 WP's and 1 AW to 256 MB of RAM. It was on the order of
$20K plus. We all know materials is 1/20 of the total installed cost. My
question is since RAM is readily available what would Foxboro's stance be if
we upgraded ourselves? We have a service agreement with them. Would it be
all bets are off or would RAM problems be unsupported or would all future
problems be blamed on RAM? Maybe I shouldn't ask but I find this cost
ridiculous. It would be a tremendous performance boost but I can't justify
it as a stand alone upgrade. We are going to have to tie it to a software
upgrade to capitalize it.

RE: Disabling Return Receipt Notification in lotus Notes

2001-09-04 Thread duc . do

Thanks, Jeremy. For those of you using Microsoft Outlook, follow these steps
to disable request of or reply to these notifications by default. They may
not be exactly like these steps (which are for Outlook 2000), but you get
the idea:

Tools | Options...
on the Preferences tab, pick E-mail Options... button
on the subsequent dialogue box, pick Tracking Options... and uncheck:
Process requests and responses on arrival
 Process receipts on arrival
Request a read receipt for all messages I send
Request a delivery receipt for all messages I send

If you really want to request a receipt for your message, you can still
request it on a per-message basis. How to do this is left as an exercise to
the interested readers.

Subject: Disabling Return Receipt Notification in lotus Notes

I have found an easy way to disable the Return Receipt Notifications
that we seem to be having problems with. This works for Lotus Notes 5:

1. Open the Create menu and choose Agent
2. Change the Name to Disable Return Receipt Notification
3. Change when should it run to After new mail has arrived
4. Click the Add Action button near the bottom
5. Choose @Function Formula in the Action box
6. Paste the text below into the box

FIELD ReturnReceipt:= ReturnReceipt;
FIELD Subject:= Subject;
@If(@IsAvailable(ReturnReceipt);
@If(ReturnReceipt = 1;
@Do(
@SetField(ReturnReceipt; 0);
@SetField(Subject; ** INFO: DISABLED \Return Receipt\ **  +
Subject)); ); );
SELECT @All

7. Hit Escape and select Save

Now whenever an email is received that requests a return receipt, the
subject will be
changed to include ** INFO: DISABLED Return Receipt **
at the start, and the return receipt will not be sent.

[ADMIN] List Archive

2001-08-27 Thread duc . do

First off, I'd like to thank Harry Forbes for his effort at archiving the
list messages on one of the Foxboro forum servers. Unfortunately, his not
having root privileges on that box proved fatal to the effort. Thanks
anyway, Harry.

I recently tried a different tack at providing archive for the list, and I
think I've come up with a reasonable solution at mail-archive.com. The
messages are archived automatically and they also provide search capability
on the archived messages. (Stan Brown ought to be happy to know that they
use htdig for their search engine.)

The archive is accessible here:

http://www.mail-archive.com/foxboro%40lists.thecassandraproject.org/

They claim to index and provide search access to all archived messages,
although only the most recent 3000 messages are shown. Over the weekend I
fed about 2700 messages dated back to January 2000 to the archive, and they
are mostly there by now, although they haven't all been indexed for
searching yet.

(A problem: the messages that were sent in fancy text have been horribly
mangled when I bounced them to the server for archiving, although the recent
ones that were archived as they were delivered fare much better. You'll know
it when you come across one.)

More information about mail-archive.com is available in the FAQ:

http://www.mail-archive.com/faq.html

Please let me know if you have any question.

Hi everyone,

I have a problem on the second ethernet port of an AW51, coneccted to the

No need to say that we already checked that we have network signal at that

Is there any way to force the AW to rescan/reset this port without rebooting

[ADMIN] Return Receipt Request

2001-08-23 Thread duc . do

Hi list,

[This note is not meant to target anybody. It's only a reminder to all for
future reference.]

Now that the return-receipt storm has subsided, let me send out another
appeal to all listmembers regarding this ugly monster that keeps rearing its
ugly head. Basically, the problem is two-fold: a message is posted with the
return-receipt request turned on; and some listmembers read that message
using mail clients that automatically reply to this request, either because
they were broken, or were misconfigured.

As you can see, it doesn't take many of those misconfigured mail clients
responding to a return-receipt request to quickly overwhelm your inbox.
Multiply that by almost 500 subscribers and one can see the magnitude of the
wasted bandwidth. It's unfortunate that some listmembers are saddled with
broken mail clients (that reflexively send a response to this request, as
opposed to ask for confirmation), but the root cause is those dang
return-receipt requests.

Please turn off the return-receipt request in your mail client (or delivery
confirmation, or confirmation request, or whatever it is called), if not by
default, then at least before you send a posting to any mailing list. It's
basic list etiquette. Your fellow listmembers will appreciate that.

Thanks,

Duc
your humble list-mom

PS: For a more sternly-worded statement, I found the following link on the
web, a portion of it is reproduced here for your enjoyment.

http://www.city.grande-prairie.ab.ca/h_email.htm#Confirmation_Requests

Confirmation Requests
~
In any posting to a mailing list, be sure to turn OFF any request for a
confirmation or acknowledgment of delivery that your mailer allows. These
confirmations (also called receipts, confirm reading or confirm
delivery options) create a monumental annoyance to mailing list
administrators. In some cases the message confirmations end up being
returned to the list server (because that is who sent the message to the
subscribers). If you are the cause of that kind of grief, plan on being
excluded from that list for the foreseeable future. No matter what happens,
there is hardly a quicker way to reap the scorn of experienced users, or to
get yourself dropped from a list than to ask for a confirmation on a message
to be posted to the list.

In fact, for your Internet e-mail generally, turn off the receipt or
confirmation request option. Every mail handler is different; some can
handle it; some cannot. And others handle it completely wrong. Forwarded or
re-directed mail frequently looses the confirmation option; and in other
cases, returns a delivery confirmation when the mail has not been delivered
at all, merely forwarded. Asking for these confirmations doubles the amount
of e-mail traffic for very little return; and it is considered an intrusion
by experienced e-mail users. It is about like sending out every letter at
the post office by return receipt requested. You would not want to impose
that on anybody (certainly not anybody whose respect you wanted to retain)
unless it was really necessary. Just rely on the reply to your e-mail to
confirm that the original message was received, or send the message by some
other means.

For those using MS Exchange, be sure to use the Properties option in the
File menu to change these options for the message your are currently

From: Deen, Ron [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Friday, May 04, 2001 7:28 AM

Need to get some info on thet AB station. Has anybody tried to run the
save_all util in the /opt/fox/ciocfg/api directory to see what that does???

I have been running automated SaveAll on my one AB station for a couple of
years now. No problem. I use my own shell wrapper around
/opt/fox/ciocfg/api/save_all but I don't think that makes any difference.

Just another data point.

You can only forget what you know...

Found out today that FoxWatch does run in CP's also. That leaves the problem
that these modules should be removed from /etc/cplns in my opinion,
otherwise the system expects these modules to contains a control database.
The explains the error from the save_all script, because the ICC is not
getting a proper response from the FoxWatch module

Still amazing what I can learn from the list though...

Hi Stan,

Wat type of module is the FoxWatch module? I would not expect a comms
processor to be in /etc/cplns on the system. (FOXWATCH is
usually a COMM10 and does not contain a control database)
Was the system configuration passed through all stations? (just to sync the
system files like /etc/cplns, /etc/aplns, the hosts
table, System Monitor files and the like, on all of them).
I do not have an Allen-Bradly station at hand and of course the thing you
cannot test will fail!
Can it be CSA died on you? I will have to check tomorrow since I don't have
a lab at home, sorry. The log will be of some help.

Hard drives for AW/WP-51D

2001-04-24 Thread duc . do

I want to buy some spare hard drives for our D-style AW/WP-51 boxes. Does
anybody have a ready source for these drives? I know these IDE drives can
probably be bought from any PC supply house, but I thought that their sizes
are important (for the I/A install script to work).

Our D boxes originally came from Foxboro with 4.3 GB drive (Seagate Medalist
4321, ST34321A) or 8.4 GB drive (Seagate Medalist 8420, ST38420A).

Thanks,

RE: Failed SaveAll -- the rest of the story

2001-04-06 Thread duc . do

Thanks to all for all of your helpful suggestions.

Thanks to Alex for offering to examine my control database. Unfortunately,
his prognosis (It's fried!) was not what I wanted to hear.

Thanks to Bo for his suggestion of using check_db_sync. I didn't get around
to using it, but I'll have to make a note of checking into it before the
next disaster drill. (And despite Bo's misgiving about automating the
SaveAll job, I'll continue running this weekly job. I just have to do a
better job of raising awareness among our group as to all the things I'm
doing behind the scene. And to just say no!)

Here's how we fix our problem:

I'm fortunate to have the old hard drive for the host AW still sitting
around since the last upgrade. Even though it was at v6.1, it's good enough
for our purpose. I booted it up in an off-line node along with the CP in
question (20CP02). I then did a LoadAll using a good SaveAll from two weeks
back. Then it's just grunt work of comparing the list of blocks in the
compounds between the off-line CP versus the real-life CP. We had to delete
a compound and add a block to another compound to make the off-line CP match
the on-line one.

At that point, I copied all of the files in /opt/fox/ciocfg/20CP02 (workfile
and all the .O files) from the off-line AW to the real-life system, did an
upload and shrink. Then I verified that we now could do a SaveAll. I
further verified that that SaveAll is good by loading it back to the
off-line CP. Everything is hunky-dory without having to initialize and
reboot the CP.

Hope this may be of help to somebody who may end up in the same dire strait
some day.

Regards,

Duc

Failed SaveAll

2001-04-05 Thread duc . do

warning: long message
-

Hi folks,

I have a CP (CP-40) that has its control database corrupted when a person
answered Yes when presented with the Database locked. Override? dialogue
box.

A little background: I schedule a weekly cron job to perform SaveAll on all
of our CPs using the ICCAPI save_all command. As luck would have it, this
person was called in on a Sunday to fix a sequence problem, and he tried to
open a CIOCFG session on this CP while the ICCAPI save_all was running. When
presented with the Database locked. Override? question, he didn't hesitate
long, reasoning that it was Sunday and nobody would be working on that CP,
must be a mistake. Once in the control session, he still couldn't connect to
the CP so he rebooted it.

Since then, I have not been able to perform a good SaveAll for this CP.
Using the CIOCFG interface the SaveAll appears to run successfully, but I
can't perform a LoadAll with the resulting disk (to an off-line CP), I keep
getting Invalid block type error for each of the compounds in this CP.
Using the ICCAPI save_all command always resulted in a failure message with
the following text in the /tmp/output* files (at different times after
trying different things to mitigate the problem):

04AW01# more /tmp/output*
FAIL 3 save 20CP02!: Wed Mar 28 16:27:01 2001 -8 Save cmd: no path name
arg

04AW01# more /tmp/output*
FAIL 2 getorder 20CP02!: Thu Mar 29 15:52:50 2001 -15 Get compound order
cmd
: ICCget error: class= 20 error= 4 text= load_wrk: fread error

04AW01# more /tmp/output*
FAIL 4 save 20CP02!20CP02_STA: Fri Mar 30 09:08:34 2001 -8 Save cmd: no
path
 name arg

BTW, I can do an upload for this CP and the workfile appears to be in good
condition (at least good enough so that I can see all the compounds, blocks,
and parameters while in a CIOCFG session). And the CP is still running okay
as we speak.

Questions:

1. What are my options in getting a good SaveAll for this CP?

2. If I have no option, would initializing/rebooting/reloading it with a
good SaveAll (from 2 weeks back) get me out of this jam?

3. Has anybody encountered problem similar to this, and what's your remedy?

Thanks for any thought and help.

RE: Version 4.3 to 6.2.1 upgrade question

2001-03-21 Thread duc . do

Jim,

We did an upgrade like yours last year (with a slight difference, we went
from 6.1 to 6.2.1 -- for all practical purposes, 4.3 and 6.1 are the same).
Here are our take on your questions:

1. No, the nodes can be converted individually. Foxboro recommends that you
upgrade the node where CSA resides first. Luckily it works out for us
without having to move the CSA server to the first node to be converted.

2. Yes, most definitely. We'll be the last system to be forced to migrate to
FoxView.

3. Again, yes. Legacy historians work fine.

4. We did this as a Day 0 install, so we reboot the CPs anyway. It didn't
make any difference to us if the CP images were new or not.

Subject: Version 4.3 to 6.2.1 upgrade question

Hello List,

We are looking at updating our version 4.3 system to version 6.2.1 in order
to expand our system to include the new CP60. We currently use AW/WP51B's
with Display Manager and the Legacy Historian. Our CP's are fault tolerant
CP40A's. We have 5 nodes connected via Carrier Band LAN. We can not shut
down all nodes at once, since this system controls two 600 megawatt coal
fired power generators.

Questions?

1. Do all of the nodes need to be converted at one time to 6.2.1 or can some
nodes exist at 4.3 while part of the node is at 6.2.1?

2. Can we continue to use our Display Manager displays, or do we have to
change to the Fox View displays?

3. Can we continue to use the Legacy Historian at version 6.2.1, or do we
have to convert to the AIM historian?

4. Is there a different CP image at version 6.2.1 that requires a reboot of
the CP for this upgrade?

Thanks for any guidance that you can give, as we are looking to see what
windows of opportunity we have for doing this type of upgrade.

snapshot

2001-03-02 Thread duc . do

We used to have to use snapshot for screen capture until we started to use
SCO XVision widely to run remote Display Managers on our desktop PCs. My
problem with snapshot is it's not as intuitive to use as others would have
you believe, especially if you don't use it often. (Perhaps I'm just dense,
but we won't go there.)

So we created an intranet web page to show how to use snapshot on the
AW/WP-51s. You, of course, cannot access this intranet page, but I have
created a PDF file and uploaded it to the Cassandra web site. If you're
interested, it's here:

http://www.thecassandraproject.org/misc/snapshot.pdf

The screen shots are not the best, but you'll get the ... um, picture.

Cassandra web site

Hi folks,

In the next few days, Warren Michelsen will put the final tweaks on his
nameserver configuration, and one of the effects is the Cassandra web site
URL will _have_ to include the www hostname part:

while this URL:

will stop working. Warren told me that this will be a permanent change.

Just a heads-up, since I myself have the habit of not using the www

Editing /etc/fox/wpcplns?

2000-10-13 Thread duc . do

We used to edit this file to take out the control stations that are no
longer physically there but not yet taken out of Sys Def so that they don't
delay the Select screen due to time-out. However, I just tried that and it
doesn't seem to work as I remember it. What gives?

Here's the relevant part of the original wpcplns:

  16CP01
  16CP02
  16CP03
  16CP04
  16CP05
  16CP06
  16CP07
  16FG01
  16MG01
  16CP08
  16CP11
  16CP12

16CP01 through 16CP07 are no longer there, but when I call up the Select
screen with 16CP* in the Search field, the display is delayed due to
time-out to these non-existent CPs.

Which file do I have to edit now to take these stations out of the picture?
(There are several reasons why we don't want to take the final step of
removing these stations from Sys Def at this point.) Thanks.

Hi Jim,

What are you looking to accomplish? Are you talking about having static
IP address for your Sun boxes? or static IP for your PC so the Sun
boxes can recognize it reliably?

To answer your questions directly: No, we don't run DHCP or DNS on our
Sun boxes. We rely on the corporate IT people to maintain their DNS
servers properly. We then set up our Sun boxes to first look in the
local hosts file, then reference the remote DNS server(s) for
communications out of the 2nd Ethernet port. There are a slew of
configuration that you need to do to achieve this. It's not

I have not finished with this archive. Nevertheless it is ready enough so
that if people want to try it they might as well. To reach the archive
directly browse to:

RE: How to figure historian size?

2000-08-25 Thread duc . do

Jack,

telnet into your AW, and run:

   grep AH /usr/fox/sp/IIF.cur

the fourth field shows the size of your historian. Quick and dirty.

Subject: How to figure historian size?

I am interested in determining the size of my historian. Can it
handle 500 or 1000 tags maximum? The historian is on an AW51B running
 6.1.1 software.

Can anyone tell me a way to do this?

RE: Historian connection to trend displays

2000-04-03 Thread duc . do

We ftp'ed the trend files to a Windows PC, used a Windows utility called
vedit (www.vedit.com) to do wholesale editing of the trends, then ftp'ed the
files back to the Sun box. It's a little kludgy, but since you only have to
do it once, it's not too bad.

vedit is shareware.

Good luck!

Subject: Historian connection to trend displays

We have recently merged two separate 500 point historians into one 1000
point historian. Now half of our preconfigured trend displays
are looking
to the wrong historian for their data, thereby showing no data
in the trend
display. Is there a utility (I seem to recollect hearing of
it some time
ago) that I can run on my trend displays to re-associate them with the
correct historian name rather than having to manually
reconfigure each trend
display?
