Bleeds and a FrameMaker graphics oddity

2006-01-13 Thread Steve Rickaby
I've been trying to set up a bleed margin on a rectangular graphical ornament
on the master page. The visual appearance of the ornament is required to be a
.25 point rule 'flush' with the page edge. (Uh-huh). Thought someone might be
interested in the problem and one possible solution...

Try this: on a master page, use the graphics tools to draw a rectangle. Now use
the nudge keys to nudge it off the right-hand side of the page. No problem.

Now try the same thing with a horizontal line: no problem.

Now try it with a vertical line. Uh? Seems like FrameMaker's coded so that a
graphic object is not allowed to be made invisible by moving it completely off
the visible page. Makes sense, I guess, *but the rule is applied even if the
object being made 'invisible' is part of a group*. This means that it's
impossible to set up a bleed area for a rectangular ornament by grouping a
thick line with the right-hand edge of the thin rectangle.

Workaround A: create a solid rectangle, then mask it with a white rectangle to
leave the required borders, and nudge it off the page edge? Nope: this doesn't
work with other solid color on the page, as a transparent object is required.

Workaround B: create the rectangle by grouping four lines of differing
thicknesses? Nope: fails the 'object cannot be made invisible even if part of a
group' rule.

Workaround C: try the same sort of thing with graphics boxes with solid
borders. Fails for more or less the same reasons - an object cannot be made
completely invisible.

Workaround D: create the required graphical object elsewhere and import it into
the master page. Bingo! An anchored frame in a text frame can be nudged off the
visible page, therefore so can its contents. This allows precise positioning of
the imported object, even if some of it is off the page edge.

Have you tried applying the condition to the Comment element itself,

element in the Structure View. We do this all the time for some
elements, and they do not result in an empty line.

Of course, I tried. And I got the mentioned empty line. Because of
this, we had to design a special paragraph format (height: 0pt,
font-color: white, etc). I know ...

Anyway, I just tried it again, just to be able to tell you that I've
got the same result, and this time it actually worked! I don't know
what I did different this time. However, I'm not sure how I can
actually hide all Comment paragraphs at once and show them again.

I've got the Sourcerer plugin sent by the Advantica people, and it
appears extremely powerful. I think, I'll have a closer look at it.

Another option is to define the Comment element as a marker element. If
you do this, there is no need for conditional text at all. However, you
are limited to 255 characters, and authors would need to actively search
for the markers in order to read the comments. A plugin like IXGen would
 make this simple, though.

 Hope this helps.

Yes, thank you.

Subject: Conditional Text in structured documents?

 Hello,

I've read chapter 17 Conditional Text of the User Guide several
times in order to find out how I can do the following, but without
 success:

I want authors to be able to add comments that will not show up in the
final printed document, but which can be exploited elsewhere, say, in
the online version. Conditional Text seems to be created for this
exact purpose. d like to use a paragraph-level element, Comment
which I can hide or show. Authors can type as much or as few as is
required in these elements. Once the document moves to the final
layout check stage, we'll hide the Comments elements by switching
Conditional Text off, and can then make the final adjustments for the
 print layout.

Testing this out, I could indeed hide the text inside the element, but
not the element itself, i.e. if the comment occupied one line, hiding
it now showed one empty line, whereas I'd like to not even see that
 empty space.

Could somebody tell me if that's possible, or not? In the latter case,
I will be looking for another solution.

 Thanks in advance.

Jakob.

Well, Hedley, it's not so much about *writing* a plugin, but about
integrating the functionality into an existing one. We already have a
powerful API client for FrameMaker+SGML we've been using for a long
long time now (so people are used to it), mainly to add the
possibility to add structured cross-references to other files.

Up to now we, as administrators, had to modify the FrameMaker file
that contains the two cross-reference targets for the two footer
fields (date and short publication title). Now we're looking to unify
and centralize meta information for our publications in one place
which can easily be manipulated by our authors. Of course, this could
be a Frame document, but a text ini file feels more appropriate
somehow.

Bleeds and a FrameMaker graphics oddity

2006-01-13 Thread Rick Quatro
When I say that the FrameMaker UI needs to be "modernized," this one of the
things that I mean. FrameMaker needs a "pasteboard" like other DTP
applications.

Conditional Text in structured documents?

Of course, I tried. And I got the mentioned empty line. Because of
this, we had to design a special paragraph format (height: 0pt,
font-color: white, etc). I know ...

Anyway, I just tried it again, just to be able to tell you that I've
got the same result, and this time it actually worked! I don't know
what I did different this time. However, I'm not sure how I can
actually hide all Comment paragraphs at once and show them again.

I've got the Sourcerer plugin sent by the Advantica people, and it
appears extremely powerful. I think, I'll have a closer look at it.

Yes, thank you.

Thank you! (re: Setting runaround properties on a table)

2006-01-13 Thread Shelly, Heather
I wanted to send a big thank you to Art Campbell, Peter Gold, Stuart
Rogers, and Glen Voyles for their help with setting up runaround
properties on a table.

In our particular case, I am going to document Art's "anchored frame
nesting" workaround for our user community, and let them use it when
they need to.

As always, I appreciate the breadth and depth of knowledge available on
this list, and the willingness of y'all to share.

Thanks,
Heather

Like Apple, I use Distiller.

For basic stuff, you don't. However, if you want to create PDF
bookmarks automatically and use FrameMaker's hypertext features , you
have to use Distiller.

Link from PDF to topics in CHM

2006-01-13 Thread Joe Campo
I had a solution from MicroType for linking from a PDF to topics in a
CHM.
However, as of Acrobat 7, the links require absolute paths.
This is unacceptable because the links will fail for all Network Server
installations, or any customized installs that deviate from the default.

So I'm back to the beginning.

Does anyone have any other ideas how to link from PDF to topics in a CHM
that will work with relative paths?

Could you link from the PDF to an HTML topic via a relative path, then
use some kind of redirection from the HTML topic to topics in a CHM? Is
that possible?

Any other ideas?

I'd appreciate any help/ideas you can provide.

Thanks.
