FM 7.2 7.2p158 - undo history

2006-04-13 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel \(Scriptware\)
When performing a 'file-save all files in book' action, FM comes up with a
warning message for each file saved that the undo-history will be lost. In a
390 file book it means 390 times clicking 'ok'.

Can this be avoided somehow - can the message on losing the undo history be
turned off any way? It comes up very often.

I'm pretty sure you can't do this with recent Reader versions for Windows. We
used to, but now we provide an installation file and I'm pretty sure we changed
because the software required the change.

As you may have guessed, I don't deal with this bit of our process. The person

OT: Including Acrobat Reader on Manual CD-ROM - Thanks!

2006-04-13 Thread David Bills

All,

Thank you for your thoughtful and informative responses. In addition to the
list posts, Dave Brown provided a URL that describes the process at:

http://www.indigorose.com/webhelp/ams60/How_do_I/Run_Adobe_Acrobat_Reader_directly_from_the_CD-ROM.htm

As Peter suggested, we'll check with our Adobe rep and ensure that we're
complying with their license prior to proceeding. It's a Government
contract, so the customer will be flexible if there's a licensing issue
involved.

Thanks again,

Dave Bills

Hmm. They more than likely meant that they didn't people to install
software on their computer just so they could read the files on the CD.

Seems to me:
1. Whoever wrote the RFP may have limited/no understanding of the
requirements of multiple platforms when publishing on CDROM.
2. Whoever wrote the RFP possibly assumes the CDROM will only ever be
run on one platform.
3. Whoever wrote the RFP may not understand that a program is often
integrated with its OS, which makes it difficult to distribute a program
that has not been installed into that environment.

Of course, there are more programs around than just Reader that can open
and display the contents of a PDF. Depends on what other features they
need, like bookmarks, etc. And it depends on what platform(s) you are
distributing for.

Joanne Curme said:
They probably meant they want a compatible version of Reader included
on the CD-ROM so users can install Reader from the CD. They want to
avoid the situation of users being unable to read the docs because
they don't have the right Reader. It also means users won't need an
Internet connection to hunt for and download the right version of
Reader.

Has anyone noticed that unless you choose plain text, the imported text

I'm sure it used to work in Frame 6. Wow, it sure makes my life difficult!!

RE: Framers Digest, Vol 6, Issue 13

2006-04-13 Thread Jim Light
I do not see that behavior. Here is what I just did:

I opened a container file and double-clicked a text inset.

I opened the text inset.

I selected a paragraph changed the paragraph tag definition to use a
completely different font. (Arial to Times New Roman) I updated the tag.

I added some random characters to the end of the graf to make sure the
changed Inset was in effect.

I saved the inset.

Back in the container file I double-clicked the inset and selected
Update Now.

My container file contains the same paragraph tag as the inset file. The
two fonts now disagree for this tag in the two files. The font in the
container file won.

I created a new tag in the inset The container file does not have this
tag at all. The tag appeared as I defined it in the inset and the
container file did not change it.

Does that help?

If you want the container file to control the formatting, make sure the
Inset and the container use exactly the same tag names.

It's indeed possible. I import PDFs by reference all the time -- it's

can't confirm it right now, but I think Berny's hypothesis is probably
correct.

OT: More on Translation Services

2006-04-13 Thread Gillian Flato
I want to thank everybody who responded to my translation services
inquiry.

After learning more about considerations for finding an appropriate
translation/localization service, I realize that I need a translation

only does medical docs, for example, would have a difficult time with
the terms and concepts of the wafer metrology industry. Additionally,
the ramp-up time would be quite long.

So if any of you are in a wafer-related industry and work with a
Translation house that understands this industry, please email me

Or in stead of defining separate entitys, use general pointer in the DTD, like

Wim,
To use a public entity set, you must include a declaration such as the
one in your message within the DTD (either in the external subset or the
internal subset). The form of declaration you've shown, with a public
identifier but no system identifier, is valid in SGML; in XML a system
identifier is required. The system identifier can be empty as in:

!ENTITY % ISOlat1 PUBLIC ISO 8879:1986//ENTITIES Added Latin 1//EN//XML

You can definitely use the Entities element in the application definition
(usually in structapps.fm) to associate a file with a public identifier, or
to specify search paths for relative filenames within a system identifier.
You don't need to do so for the 19 ISO public entity sets, since FM
recognizes their public identifiers.

Runnning Windows on Mac news

2006-04-13 Thread Pat Christenson
The NY Times had an article today about Parallels Workstation, a beta
software that allows you to run OS X and Windows (any version, not just
XP) simultaneously on an intel-powered Mac. You don't have to reboot
when you switch. You can copy/paste between systems. You have to
network them to share files. The free download is available at
http://www.parallels.com/.

This sounds like the most acceptable solution for the I don't wanna
buy a PC just to run FrameMaker folks (of which I am one, although I
already have both a Mac and a PC).

Re: Runnning Windows on Mac news

2006-04-13 Thread Peter Gold

Hi, Pat:

From a user's viewpoint, Parallels is similar to Microsoft's
Virtual PC. Tech-heads say the the technologies are somewhat
different, but from the user side, the experience is similar:

* You pay for a copy of Windows, and install it on your Mac.

* You pay for a copy of any Windows software you need, and install it
on the Windows side.

* You pay a penalty in speed because VPC and Parallels both have to
imitate Windows.

Each generation of faster machines makes the speed loss somewhat
less. Older Windows applications that were developed for slower
environments exhibit less slow-down, but newer resource-hungry
applications struggle.

I'm still surprised by how nimble FM under Classic on my older TiBook
*seems*, compared to InDesign CS2 under OS X Panther 10.3.9; partly
this is due to Classic taking some of my maximum load of 1GB RAM, and
my FM being set to a large memory partition under Classic, and partly
even 1GB under OS X is borderline for ID CS2, Bridge, and Version
Cue, without Classic. However, on my newer Windows laptop and WinXP,
FM 7.2 is nimble enough, and has all the updated features and bug-fix
patches that aren't available since FM 7 was discontinued on
Macintosh.

MacTel's story is only beginning, however. Who knows what might
happen next for FM users?

Boot Camp enables you to run Windows XP natively. The beta copy
already has the native drivers. There is no speed degradation. It is
not emulation.

Parallels seems to be virtulization, but not emulation. It is a true
beta and does not yet have all the drivers needed.

The caveat is that you need an Intel Mac to run these programs.

Exporting RTF or MIF from InDesign

2006-04-13 Thread hedley.fin...@myob.com
All:

A colleague wants to know whether there is any way of exporting text
content and graphics from InDesign to FrameMaker (either as binary FM or
MIF). Otherwise, export to Word or Rich Text Format (RTF) may have to
suffice. I've not used InDesign, so can't comment.

You would think this was easy as both InDesign and FrameMaker are Adobe
products, but a visit to Adobe's site was not very informative.

Including Acrobat Reader on Manual CD-ROM

2006-04-13 Thread Alan Litchfield
Hmm. They more than likely meant that they didn't people to install software
on their computer just so they could read the files on the CD.

Seems to me:
1. Whoever wrote the RFP may have limited/no understanding of the requirements
of multiple platforms when publishing on CDROM.
2. Whoever wrote the RFP possibly assumes the CDROM will only ever be run on
one platform.
3. Whoever wrote the RFP may not understand that a program is often integrated
with its OS, which makes it difficult to distribute a program that has not
been installed into that environment.

Of course, there are more programs around than just Reader that can open and
display the contents of a PDF. Depends on what other features they need, like
bookmarks, etc. And it depends on what platform(s) you are distributing for.

Cheers

Exporting RTF or MIF from InDesign

2006-04-13 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Alan (and Hedley):

ID 2.x did export HTML, but later releases do not! There's an export
"package" option for GoLive, but it's not HTML.

There are free scripts available at the Adobe Studio and InDesign
User-to-User Forum that can export all stories in a file as RTF or
text. You can export an ID file as XML, but you need to assign XML
element tags to each object and story to do this.

Your suggestion to export as PDF and convert PDF to RTF is a
reasonable workaround.

Including Acrobat Reader on Manual CD-ROM

2006-04-13 Thread Peter Gold
If there's no information on running Reader from a CD-ROM on the
Adobe site, and it's not mentioned in the license, and no mention
especially in the distribution requirements, it's a good bet that
Adobe doesn't want their product to be distributed this way, even if
it runs. Although Reader is free, it's not without licence
requirements.

FM 7.2 7.2p158 - undo history

2006-04-13 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel (Scriptware)
When performing a 'file-save all files in book' action, FM comes up with a
warning message for each file saved that the undo-history will be lost. In a
390 file book it means 390 times clicking 'ok'.

Can this be avoided somehow - can the message on losing the undo history be
turned off any way? It comes up very often.

Subject: Help! My postscript file won't distill

Every time I try to print a Framemaker book to postscript (or save as PDF) I
get the message - This PostScript file was created from an encrypted PDF
file.
Redistilling encrypted PDF is not permitted.

I have checked all of the security settings and there is no security
settings. What is causing this, and how can I remove the security settings?
Thanks very much for anyone's help!

It's indeed possible. I import PDFs by reference all the time -- it's
the best way (IMO) to get Visio diagrams into FM. I have a meeting and
can't confirm it right now, but I think Berny's hypothesis is probably
correct.

Help! My postscript file won't distill

2006-04-13 Thread rebecca.l.fras...@aphis.usda.gov
I just solved my own problem. Apparently there was an encrypted pdf form
imported into one of the framemaker files. After I deleted the imported
pdf, I had no problem.

OT: More on Translation Services

2006-04-13 Thread Gillian Flato
I want to thank everybody who responded to my translation services
inquiry.

After learning more about considerations for finding an appropriate
translation/localization service, I realize that I need a translation
service that has experience translating documents related to wafer
fabrication. My company does wafer metrology. A translation service that
only does medical docs, for example, would have a difficult time with
the terms and concepts of the wafer metrology industry. Additionally,
the ramp-up time would be quite long.

So if any of you are in a wafer-related industry and work with a
Translation house that understands this industry, please email me
privately with their information.

Thanks,

First question from my new gig

2006-04-13 Thread John Posada
Hi, guys...I've landed at EMC. I'm here since yesterday and I have my
first question.

Using FM7.2 unstrutured and creating PDFs...When I set, from the
Book, File -> File Info, are the settings applied to all the files in
the book or only the file that is highlighted in the book?

IF the changes are done at the file level instead of the book level
(which I suspect), and then I run Distiller, where is it picking up
the properties that it places in the PDF? Is it from the first file
in the book? The last file? From wherever it chooses?

Related question...how do I replicate the values to all the files in
the book so they are consistent? I'm guesing Document Properties, but
the problems with is is that it brings with it setting changes that I
don't want. How can I isolate the replication to just the File Info
settings?

Thanks, guys.

Try selecting all the files in the book (or the ones you want to
affect with the edit), as well as the book file itself.

another questions on XML import

Wim,
To use a public entity set, you must include a declaration such as the
one in your message within the DTD (either in the external subset or the
internal subset). The form of declaration you've shown, with a public
identifier but no system identifier, is valid in SGML; in XML a system
identifier is required. The system identifier can be empty as in:

You have to
"network" them to share files. The free download is available at
http://www.parallels.com/.

This sounds like the most acceptable solution for the "I don't wanna
buy a PC just to run FrameMaker" folks (of which I am one, although I
already have both a Mac and a PC).

Runnning Windows on Mac news

2006-04-13 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Pat:

From a user's viewpoint, "Parallels" is similar to Microsoft's
"Virtual PC." Tech-heads say the the technologies are somewhat
different, but from the user side, the experience is similar:

* You pay for a copy of Windows, and install it on your Mac.

* You pay for a copy of any Windows software you need, and install it
on the Windows "side."
