Could FrameMaker 7.2 users > elaborate on this feature? I was able to find the review mentioned in a slightly different location: http://www.stcuk.org/newsletters/October2005/articles/article2.htm The reference is to an icon added to the formatting bar in FM7.2. It is identical to the icon already present in the QuickAccess bar. Both icons open the same dialog box (Graphics > Object Properties), which may also be opened through other shortcuts. The "extremely useful" phrase is indeed used in the review, but frankly I wasn't sure how it should be interpreted. Where to find instructions for creating a watermark
If you want to do it in Frame, the strategy would be to create a Master page(s) with either a background text frame with DRAFT in it or a graphic with the text. (see Master page / background objects in help) Applying it gets a little tricky. If you have a master template that you can apply to all the books, you're in good shape. Make a copy of the template, modify the master pages with the text, and apply it at the book level. If you're using multiple designs and templates though, you're probably going to have to do each book manually. John's suggestion of using Conditional Text to turn it on and off has merit too. * A number of printers support this functionality. My HP, for instance, allows you to add a watermark, which may be a lot cleaner/easier solution if you can't easily update your template / master pages. I think you can also do this in PostScript if you're printing to .pdf. * And as a further aside, I add the draft information to the footer of each page with a variable instead of messing with the background at all. When the book goes final and is ready to print, the part number takes the place of the draft notice. Variables vs Cross-references vs Text Insets [WAS: Hiding Pages?]
Eric, It may not be a relevant issue for you, but our department switched from xrefs to variables because the less experienced Frame users kept breaking the links and generating unresolved xrefs. We didn't think this would be difficult problem to resolve, but a number of the writers kept breaking the links after they had been trained, so we changed the way we managed the nomenclatures. The point I'm attempting to make is that large departments, particularly those that weigh specialized technical skills and experience higher than desktop publishing skills, should factor the Frame capabilities of their less skilled Frame users into these types of decisions. It may be possible to have a Xref that produces multiple paragraphs (Using \R in the def?) but I doubt it would be workable. But to combine multiple paragraphs, you need to have information that's consistently tagged and organised. Then, it's only really workable to create strings as I have done. For multiple paras, I'd stick to insets. Eric L.
