Sounds like you didn't "Update all" when you were on the Ref page. You need to
apply that style update on the ref page, not the body page. If you do it only
on the body page, it won't "take. Then make sure that the style is applied to
all of the tags on the body page, or you won't get what you want. This is one
of those rare freaky little twists in FrameMaker. There aren't a lot of them,

Book printing as cropped A4 not letter

2006-08-08 Thread Partridge, Robert
Can anyone help us. We've got a document that is defined as Letter,
which when saved as PDF from Frame+SGML 6.0 to Acrobat 7.0 becomes an A4
document cropped down to 11in high (but with A4 width of 8.27in).

We've had this issue before when there was a mismatch between the
document size and the printer settings. On the machine in question the
settings for Adobe PDF and Distiller appear to all state Letter paper
size. The job options specify Letter size. On other machines with the
same set up the document is generated correctly so it must be a local
setting. Is there anywhere else where page size is specified?

Cheers,

Rob

how to change the papercolor in FM

2006-08-08 Thread Vijay Mahesh Tarwala
Hi Joliet,

To achieve what you desire, here is the trick.
Go to the "Master Page" and Add a rectangle of the size of your page
with the desired colour and align it behind any text blocks. Now
return back to the Body Pages, and VOILA there you are with the
background colour for your FM document.

Vijay Mahesh Tarwala

FM Error: "Cannot write to specified print file"

2006-08-08 Thread Roger Fienhold Sheen
Framers,

A colleague of mine is receiving the "Cannot write to specified print file"
error message whenever he tries to print to a PostScript file using Acrobat
Distiller (FM 6.0, Acrobat 5.0, WinXP).

I assumed this error was caused by spurious read-only permissions in the
project folder, but changing the folder permissions via the Properties
dialog didn't seem to "stick". (There is an article on this issue in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base .)

I tried printing to PS from a new file in a different location, but got the
same error message on his machine. I can print these files to PS on my
machine, so it appears to be a problem specific to his computer.

Before I follow the "attrib" command line workaround suggested in the KB
article, I just wanted to ask if any of you have any other suggestions.

Thanks in advance for any insight,

Roger

I had the same problem and could not fix it. I tried everything. I
finally imported the settings from another TOC that the leaders worked

out whatever hidden setting was causing the problem.

how to change the papercolor in FM

How do you change the paper colour? By changing the paper in the printer.

Except for the suggestion changing windows settings, all the artifices to
change the background colour have the same danger. If you don't set it up
with a colour that is set to not print, you'll end up with background
colour printed on the entire page up to the printer margins.

Re: FM crashes when trying to save a certain .book as .mif

We had a file crash a couple of weeks ago when saving to MIF. Turned out the
problem was that it had a table of contents imported as a text inset at the
start, and the second page of that had two copies of the text frame. Once we
deleted the spare, problem gone.

Re: FM Error: "Cannot write to specified print file"

2006-08-08 Thread rebecca officer
Hi Roger

Make sure he has a "FILE:" port in his printer setup. Nothing has to use it, it
just has to exist. To check if it exists, open up the properties for any
printer and check the ports tab. If it doesn't exist, note the port that the
printer is currently using, then add the FILE: port as a new port. It's a local
port. When you add it, Windows will set the current printer to use it. Return
the current printer to its previous port, click okay.

Character Format tag does not apply "bold" in Structured Autonumbering (once again)

2006-08-08 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
Yes. We even printed the manual in question this way last year.

The workaround seems to be to add the font family name to the
character format, which is OK in this instance, but would be odd if
using with a different font family. Then I would have to make a
different character format tag for that or all other font families.

This used to be OK before SP2. I wonder whether SP2 manages fonts
somewhat differently.

Thanks for the input.

2006-08-08 Thread Art Campbell
Actually, neither my first reply nor anyone else's was 100% complete.
If you want to do "paper color," you need to start with the background
rectangle to color the margins. Then you also need to select and fill
the text containers with the same color.
Otherwise you end up with a picture frame effect

Vijay,
It's actually not necessary to create such a rectangle. You can set the

Bullet symbols in EDD

Hi All

Can anyone let me know how to get those bullet symbols (like square,
triangle) through an EDD??

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanx

how to change the papercolor in FM

2006-08-08 Thread Doug
What's your intent in changing the paper color? If you just want
something other than white on your screen, you can modify the Windows
Desktop settings to make the paper color be anything you like.
Personally, I have mine set to be off-white. This helps me spot text
boxes that I need to replace with imported images. The text boxes
display in the same off-white as the rest of the page; the images
display white even though they are otherwise identical with the text
box content.

FM crashes when trying to save a certain .book as .mif

2006-08-08 Thread Art Campbell
Does it make any difference if all the content files are open or not?
Is it local or on the network?
Can you save it in any other formats?
And finally, how much RAM have you got?

Schema tools

2006-08-08 Thread Mike Feimster
Jon,

You don't need to create a schema outside of Frame and then import it.
You can create an EDD (Frame's version of a schema) in FrameMaker. When
you are done, you can save the EDD as a DTD. (If you have FM 7.2, I
think you can also save it as an XML Schema.)

To create an EDD in Frame, click File | Structure Tools | New EDD.

The EDD is itself a structured Frame doc so it will guide you through
the creation.

how to change the papercolor in FM

2006-08-08 Thread Art Campbell
I don't think you can affect the paper color.
You can, however, create a rectangle or graphic frame the same size as
the sheet and apply any color you want to it. Which should give the
same effect. This frame would be on the master page and be a new
layer, under your text containers.

RE: Schema tools

2006-08-08 Thread Sales at Bright Path
Hi Jon:

You can create directly in FrameMaker as an EDD, then can save as a DTD.
(If you need a schema, you can turn a DTD into a schema using several
tools... My favorite is TurboXML:
http://www.tibco.com/software/metadata/turboxml.jsp .

Or, to create the DTD or schema you can use tools like TurboXML, Oxygen,
etc. Make either a DTD or a schema (depending on what your requirements
are) and then bring the DTD or schema into FrameMaker via File > Structure
Tools > Open DTD (or Open Schema). FrameMaker's EDD is created from that
imported element/attribute data and you can start adding your
formatties/template info.

If you need any additional clarification, feel free to reply.

Good luck,

"Schema" is a database term. A schema describes the
detailed structure of a particular database design. If
your intent is to export data from structured
FrameMaker into such an existing database, your EDD
must replicate the schema of your database.

If that's not your goal, and instead you are simply
trying to create structured documents, then you may be
able to ignore some of the rigors of a pre-defined
schema in developing your structured application.
Other external constraints/requirements, however, may
impose schema-like requirements that affect the design
of your EDD. It's even conceivable that the EDD you
develop, when it is converted to a DTD/schema, could
be used to define the schema for a new database in
which you intend to store Framemaker documents broken
up into their constituent structured components.

Be aware that implementing a true database schema
imposes certain constraints on EDD developement. For
instance, the use of inclusions in the structure rules
of an EDD makes documents created in accordance with
an EDD incompatible with export to XML or storage in a
database. Also, true schemas can impose more rigorous
requirements on the permissable values of attributes.

Re: how to change the papercolor in FM

2006-08-08 Thread Art Campbell

Actually, neither my first reply nor anyone else's was 100% complete.
If you want to do "paper color," you need to start with the background
rectangle to color the margins. Then you also need to select and fill
the text containers with the same color.
Otherwise you end up with a picture frame effect

Mac FrameMaker can import WMF files ok, although they are not necessarily a
good choice of format. Make sure that the files have a '.wmf' extension so that
the Mac knows what they are. When you import them, check 'Show All Files' in
the Import Files dialog to see the files.

The most likely cause of your difficulty is that *any* file going from PC to
Mac (not just graphics files) lacks the signature data that Macs used to use to
identify a file's type and creator. This will prevent such files from being
listed in FrameMaker's Import File dialog unless you check 'Show All Files',
because FrameMaker cannot recognise the file as something it can import
without signature data. The method by which you transfer the files shouldn't
make any difference, it's just an issue of different file systems.

OS X now uses the file name extension as well, but of course FrameMaker knows
nothing about OS X :-(

Character Format tag does not apply "bold" in Structured Autonumbering (once again)

2006-08-08 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
Hi all.

I have earlier complained about problems with Character tags where
bold becomes bolded or bold does not work at all, so therefore I have
as much as possible tried in structured FM to use Characther change
format elements. However, these elements can not be used on
autonumbering, so there I am stuck with the dreaded Character format
tags.

I have this problem now, that we are using numbered notes, which are
set to Angle=Oblique (Helvetica being the default font). The character
format tag, called Note changes the following: Weight=Bold, and
Color=Note.
Out of this the only change I get is the color. The weight is still
regular althoug the Character Format Tag distinctly says bold.

Any Idea out there?

Going for a long weekend, so I will probably not check the replies
until Tuesday.

Take care,

Bodvar

Run WinOS (and FM) on a MAC OS X

2006-08-08 Thread Lief Erickson
I recently "switched" and a main reason that I did was a product called
Parallels (www.parallels.com) that does the same thing as VMWare. As long as
you are not looking to be a high-end gamer, Parallels is a sweet tool. It
turned my Mac into a Windows machine while staying in the Mac OS (better than
Boot Camp, which requires a reboot).

I'm not affiliated with Parallels, just a licensed user.

Hi, guys...VMWare is a company owned by my company (EMC), so I

VMWare is signing up beta testers for a version that will run on MAC
OS X that will permit the creation of a partition that will allow the
running of a Windows (or other) OS.

virtual machines and run them on other VMware products or run any

Character Format tag does not apply "bold" in Structured Autonumbering (once again)

Hi, B?dvar:

Have you verified that bold isn't being applied by selecting the text
and examining it with the character designer, or printing to PDF or
paper, or by increasing the zoom percentage? Some fonts at some
magnifications don't always display bold properties on screen in FM.

Re: Character Format tag does not apply "bold" in Structured Autonumbering (once again)

RE: Schema tools

2006-08-08 Thread Mike Feimster
Jon,

You don't need to create a schema outside of Frame and then import it.
You can create an EDD (Frame's version of a schema) in FrameMaker. When
you are done, you can save the EDD as a DTD. (If you have FM 7.2, I
think you can also save it as an XML Schema.)

To create an EDD in Frame, click File | Structure Tools | New EDD.

The EDD is itself a structured Frame doc so it will guide you through
the creation.

Does it make any difference if all the content files are open or not?
Is it local or on the network?
Can you save it in any other formats?
And finally, how much RAM have you got?

FM crashes when trying to save a certain .book as .mif

2006-08-08 Thread Spreadbury, David
Off the top of my head, I can think of three possible ways to
troubleshoot this issue.

1. Delete the book and recreate it - this would tell me that the book
file itself has become corrupted somehow.

2. Try saving each file in the book out as mif and then opening the mif
files and resaving as fm files. Then update your book file and try
saving.

3. Delete half of the files from the book file and try saving. This
would indicate that the problem resides in one of the files that were
removed from the book. If you have ten chapters, delete the last five.
If the book still crashes, put the original five back and delete the
other five and retry. If the problem is in one of the chapter files, you
will ultimately narrow it down to the corrupted file. Then either save
it as mif and open it and save as fm, or rebuild the file.

I don't think you can affect the paper color.
You can, however, create a rectangle or graphic frame the same size as
the sheet and apply any color you want to it. Which should give the
same effect. This frame would be on the master page and be a new
layer, under your text containers.

Surbhi,
As you've no doubt learned, font changes you apply to individual
characters in an EDD are not preserved when you import element definitions
from the EDD. You must specify the font change in addition to the character
you want inserted. For a prefix or suffix, you can specify individual
character properties or a character format tag in a TextRangeFormatting
element. For an autonumber, you can specify a character format tag in an
AutonumCharFormat element. Note that all characters within a prefix,
suffix, and autonumber must use the same character format.

Framemaker crashes with something like "Internal error 7004, 4774952,
6370823, 6388968").
Other .book-files I can saven to .mif without problems.

Any ideas for where to start troubleshooting?

Thanks,
/Martin

The character
format tag, called Note changes the following: Weight=Bold, and
Color=Note.
Out of this the only change I get is the color. The weight is still
regular althoug the Character Format Tag distinctly says bold.

Any Idea out there?

Going for a long weekend, so I will probably not check the replies
until Tuesday.

Take care,

Bodvar
