data reuse in structured FM...

2006-09-08 Thread Ellen Lebelle
Hi Elisa,

First of all, Lynne's answer is good and I have only one thing to add: Inset
Plus (http://www.weststreetconsulting.com/WSC_InsetPlus.htm)
It's been a great plug in.
That and the Sourcerer (www.advantica.biz/sourcerer), to filter attributes
are great and get away from Frame's conditional text limitations, have been
wonder tools.

If there are enough frameusers in France who would like Russ to come over
and speak or do a workshop, I bet we could twist his arm - answer me
off-list. (secretary at stcfrance.org)

Russ, if you are reading this, tell me how much twisting it would take ;-)

Subject: data reuse in structured FM...
Hi all,

Am on FM 7.1, structured (more or less coz I haven't defined a proper
template/EDD yet).

---

I have never been very familiar with text insets but I thought this
could be the right solution for this...But I am unable to import a
specific part of a data flow from one section to another in the same FM
file... anyone can help me on this?

Maybe the text inset option isn't the right solution for this, as it is
structured document?

I hope my question isn't to messy.

Many thanks in advance,

Elisa

Elisa,
A text inset cannot consist of part of a flow. Instead, create a new
flow containing only the reusable portion and import it into both sections.
This flow can be the main flow of a new document, a body flow of a new
document, or a reference flow in the document you are editing or another
one. Since you can create multiple body flows or reference flows in one
document, you have the option of storing all text insets in one document.
Just remember that if you use reference flows of the containing document,
you'll need to save it before importing the text insets.
A structured text inset must have a root element. You might therefore
want your EDD to define an element that can contain part of a section. For
example, suppose you want a Section to contain a Title and then four
Paragraph elements of which the three last ones are to be in a text inset.
You might define an element called TextInset that can contain all of the
children of a Section (except possibly the Title). You would then create a
flow containing a TextInset element with the three reusable Paragraphs, and
the section with the text inset would consist of the Title, the first
Paragraph, and the imported TextInset.

equation issue: size of parentheses and brackets

2006-09-08 Thread Karen Mardahl
Hi framers

Frame7.1p116 WinXPsp2

How can I adjust the size of parenthese and brackets in an equation?

A colleague asked for help in building an equation. It was fairly
easy, but the expression had subscripted and superscripted items, as
well as a fraction structure, so it was rather high and extended
beyond the top of the parentheses.
The font sizes are just right elsewhere, so I cannot change them -
font size changes are global (right?).
There was also an Epsilon with a bracket. There were only 2 variables
in the bracket stacked on top of each other, and they, too, extended
over the top of the bracket.

The result was acceptable, but I want to know for the future. How to
fix or tweak?

Thanks.

regards, Karen Mardahl

Getting the Euro Symbol in Frame

2006-09-08 Thread Scott White
Folks
I have a client in Ireland who wants the Euro symbol to show up in their
pricing. So it should look like (Euro symbol)Price. The problem is when we
import the tab file from our filemaker database into Frame it changes the
Euro symbol to a (Latin Captial Letter A with Diaeresis or the Captial A
with two dots over the top of it)Price.
Is there a way to get a paragraph tag to convert the "A with two dots" to a
euro symbol automatically? Is there a different code we should be using in
the tab file to tell frame to understand this character as a Euro symbol?

I can add the euro symbol to a paragraph tag but I get the (Euro
symbol)(Latin Captial Letter A with Diaeresis or the Captial A with two dots
over the top of it) then the price.

I know you can globally replace the symbol(s) with edit and change, but the
client doesn't want to do that.
Any help would be appreciated.

Windows, Frame 7.2. Mac, OS 10 Tiger.

Getting the Euro Symbol in Frame

2006-09-08 Thread Spreadbury, David
You must have a font that supports the Alt+0128 when you enter the Alt
code. I just tried it with Helvetica Neue and it works just fine.

In your tab file, find the first instance and make the change manually.
Then copy what you manually did to the clipboard and globally search for
the wrong character and replace with what's on your clipboard.

Getting the Euro Symbol in Frame

2006-09-08 Thread Scott White
David
Here is what we figured out. We had to bring the correct hex ISO latin-1
character codes for frame to understand the euro.

For the euro symbol -- "\xf5 " no quotes and space after the 5.

We will have to incorporate this into our filemaker out put.
Interesting.

Getting the Euro Symbol in Frame

Scott - you are seeing a classic font mapping problem. First off, no font can
display a Euro symbol if it doesn't *have* a Euro symbol. Forgive me for
stating the obvious. Secondly, if font A does have a Euro symbol, there is no
guarantee that another font, or the same font on another platform, will have
the Euro symbol at the same ASCII value.

What seems to be happening here is that your database uses one ASCII value for
the Euro, but when that's expressed in FrameMaker with font X, or whatever,
that ASCII value is mapping to the A-umlaut. Not helpful for you.

I expect the script experts here can come up with a solution based on massaging
the MIF, or something. If it were only a FrameMaker Platform A to FrameMaker
Platform B issue, I'd suggest a character tag that mapped to a Euro font
(that's a font that consists only of Euro characters) to lock it down.

Just looking at Arial here on a Mac, A-umlaut is ASCI 128 and the Euro is ASCII
219. However, on a PC it's probably different.

Re-reading the above, I see that I haven't offered solution. Sorry.

Getting the Euro Symbol in Frame

2006-09-08 Thread Ridder, Fred
Does the data in the database actually include the Euro symbol
or does the database contain only the numerical values? In other
words, is the Euro symbol added as formatting when the database
produces the export file that you're importing into FrameMaker?
If so, my recommendation would be to export just the numerical
data, and apply the Euro symbol as autonumbering that is
attached to the paragraph tag you use for the price.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

David
Here is what we figured out. We had to bring the correct hex ISO latin-1
character codes for frame to understand the euro.

For the euro symbol -- "\xf5 " no quotes and space after the 5.

We will have to incorporate this into our filemaker out put.
Interesting.

They are listed on the import file menu, but you may run into some
memory and translation issues if they're really large files.

If you do, I've had AutoCAD guys generate a .pdf and used that both
because it's a direct import and because it's vector. Much better
result if you have them generate a .PDF and import that than if you
convert to a non-vector format like ,jpg.

If you want to maintain the vector quality, you should save your CAD
files to EPS. If this can't be done directly from Solidworks, you should
be able to get a printer driver that will generate the EPS file.

Bill,

I would convert them to PDF and import them into FrameMaker. Google DXF to
PDF and you will find some programs that do this.

Importing images from a CAD system

2006-09-08 Thread Robert Stoker
We never directly use DXF files. We first clean up the DXF file in
Canvas (or Illustrator), and then save the file as EPS. This way we get
rid of the bulk of the DXF format but keep the vectors. During the
process, we don't resize the file to the final output size. Rather, we
use a plug-in that we developed to import the EPS file into a standard
frame. The plug-in automatically sizes and centers the file in the
anchored frame.

Here are a few things to remember when you work with DXF files:

-You may need to delete proprietary information from the file. The file
may contain supplier information, manufacturing information, etc. that
you don't want to publish.
-You will need to bump up the line weights. The lines come in as
hairlines. Hairlines don't print very well. We usually bump the lines
to 0.5 pt.
-You may need to replace the text. The text is converted to paths
during the DXF export (at least from ProE). Sometimes the text spacing
and placement is destroyed during the export. Also, when you increase
the line weight, the stroke of the text paths is increased.

Your hardware tech writers are -- how shall I put this? -- graphically
challenged. They convert a *scaleable_vector_drawing* into a bitmapped
image (and the worst possible format of bitmapped image for a line
drawing, the format they should use only for photos), and then they
*scale* the *bitmap*??

I don't work with CAD drawings, so I don't know much about this. I know
DXF files are ASCII text, so file size can be pretty big. But if file
size is really an issue, surely there are better solutions than
converting them to JPEGs.

RE: Importing images from a CAD system

2006-09-08 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
I am in the process of educating the engineers I work with over this issue.
They are in the habit of giving me a JPEG image when I request a line
drawing. JPEG was never intended for anything other than continuous tone
images. When a line drawing gets exported to a JPEG, the line quality
suffers horribly.
I ask them to export to CGM, which I import into Adobe Illustrator and
convert to either EPS or leave as a native AI file. The resulting file can
then be imported into Frame just fine and I don't lose on the line quality
or scalability.

Maybe the text inset option isn't the right solution for this, as it is

I hope my question isn't to messy.

Elisa,
A text inset cannot consist of part of a flow.

Elisa,
A text inset cannot consist of part of a flow.

New FrameMaker DITA and S1000D Application Packs Available Now

2006-09-08 Thread Scott Abel
A little tardy, perhaps, but the much-anticipated FrameMaker 7.2
Application packs for Microsoft® Windows are today available for free

a work in progress. Expect things to go wrong. Then, share your
feedback with Adobe. They’ve created a discussion forum that ought to
prove helpful to users and to the FrameMaker Application Pack

Valid Hyperlinks in Single-Source Documentation

2006-09-08 Thread Pinkham, Jim
I'm a relative newcomer to Frame (7.1 with Win XP SP2), and I'm
embarking on the next phase of my FM learning curve -- experimenting
with its single-source capabilities by starting to reuse chapters with
little or no changes from one manual we produce to the next.

When I generate the PDF, I notice that the internal hyperlinks break
when they point to sections in the reused chapters. I want our users to
navigate seamlessly within the PDF so that the links take them from
point to point within and between chapters. Is there a practical,
relatively painless way to do this short of searching for and manually
validating/updating every cross-reference within FM and/or the PDF?

Insufficient data

2006-09-08 Thread McKinney, Doug
Framers!

I created a book with five chapters from which I generated a PDF file. I
sent the book to the company printer but they couldn't open it. We isolated
the fault to one chapter. The error message in Adobe Acrobat reads:
Insufficient Data and some fonts are not embedded.

I'm using FM 7.2 and Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional. I sent two other
smaller books to the printer which did not have any problems so I don't
believe there are any compatibility issues.

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

Just saw it online. Go get 'em :)

I haven't even downloaded them yet, but wanted to let the list know about

others on the list will post comments to the Adobe Labs site as well, so I'd

Subject: data reuse in structured FM...

Hi all,

Am on FM 7.1, structured (more or less coz I haven't defined a proper
template/EDD yet).

In brief, I'm currently writing a user guide for an OpenSource ETL
process designer.

This designer allows me to use components to compose ETL process
flowcharts.

In one chapter of this guide, I detailed each component and in
particular the component's specific property parameters.

This chapter is divided into section per component and subsections for
properties and use case scenario.

Then within the properties subsection, the actual properties are
organised in a table which differs more or less from one component to
the other.

I want to be able to reuse the content of part of the component
properties table for another component which has almost the same
properties although some differ...

The idea behind this, being obviously to ease the maintenance and update
of the component properties chapter...

I have never been very familiar with text insets but I thought this
could be the right solution for this...But I am unable to import a
specific part of a data flow from one section to another in the same FM
file... anyone can help me on this?

Maybe the text inset option isn't the right solution for this, as it is

I hope my question isn't to messy.

Many thanks in advance,

Elisa

equation issue: size of parentheses and brackets

Thanks Gillian but that is not it.
When we import the raw tab file into frame it is converting the euro symbol
in the file to the A with the two dots over it. If we import the dollar

RE: Getting the Euro Symbol in Frame

2006-09-08 Thread Spreadbury, David
You must have a font that supports the Alt+0128 when you enter the Alt
code. I just tried it with Helvetica Neue and it works just fine.

In your tab file, find the first instance and make the change manually.
Then copy what you manually did to the clipboard and globally search for
the wrong character and replace with what's on your clipboard.

Thanks Gillian but that is not it.
When we import the raw tab file into frame it is converting the euro
symbol
in the file to the A with the two dots over it. If we import the dollar
symbol it displays just fine in Frame.

Re: Getting the Euro Symbol in Frame

2006-09-08 Thread Scott White
David
Here is what we figured out. We had to bring the correct hex ISO latin-1
character codes for frame to understand the euro.

For the euro symbol -- "\xf5 " no quotes and space after the 5.

We will have to incorporate this into our filemaker out put.
Interesting.

Re: Getting the Euro Symbol in Frame

Sorry.

RE: Getting the Euro Symbol in Frame

2006-09-08 Thread Ridder, Fred
Does the data in the database actually include the Euro symbol
or does the database contain only the numerical values? In other
words, is the Euro symbol added as formatting when the database
produces the export file that you're importing into FrameMaker?
If so, my recommendation would be to export just the numerical
data, and apply the Euro symbol as autonumbering that is
attached to the paragraph tag you use for the price.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.
