FrameMaker 7.0 for Mac?

Seconding what William said, yes, eBay should find you a copy if you are
patient: that's how I got mine. Yes, it exists, and it's afaik identical to
FrameMaker 7.0 for PC, in that is has the bugs that were fixed by version 7.1,
which was the first release after the Mac version was discontinued. (I have no
idea what those bugs were, but I'm sure others on this list can tell you.)

Migration between platforms should not be a big issue for you providing that
you are aware of a few issues:

. Fonts are generally ok but you have to watch out for some dangerous ones.
Those are generally the ones where font foundries have used different names for
the individual faces between Mac and PC platforms. I am currently battling with
a particularly nasty issue with Frutiger from Monotype and Linotype. TransType
can be your friend here: .

. You can cross-map fonts in the maker.ini file on PC FrameMaker, but no such
facility exists on the Mac.

. Forward migration between versions should be smooth. Backward migration to
5.5 would have to be handled by the MIF route, as I expect you know, although
FrameMaker 7.0 onwards can save in FrameMaker 6 format (as I expect you also
already know).

. The Mac version has a different population of graphics input filters to the
PC version: Mac FrameMaker, for example, cannot import BMP format files out of
the box.

Yes--as mentioned, you are probably hunting for a used copy now.
Just be sure that the license transfer is part of the deal, so you become
the official owner.

At this point, I believe all version 7 files are compatible. You biggest
issue will be fonts--you will need Mac versions of the exact fonts used.
Even then, you might get some reflow. This may not be an issue if you are
just editing at home, not worrying about the layout. If you are using good
ol' Arial and TNR, be aware that the Mac versions are NOT the same fonts.
(On a minor note: if creating EPS files on a Mac, be sure to save with an
8-bit color TIFF preview, not the default Mac preview.)

Another option is to upgrade to an Intel Mac. You can run Windows on it a
number of ways, and there is a beta program that lets you run Windows
software directly on the Mac.

Issue in Optimizing PDF size

2006-10-07 Thread Ridder, Fred
For *any* book-level operation (updating, printing, etc.) to
succeed, FrameMaker has to be able to open, save, and
close each file "silently" (not displaying the file) with no
messages. Any warning message upon opening any file
(e.g., the "older version" message you report, an unresolved
cross-reference warning, an unavailable fonts alert) will
prevent FrameMaker from completing the "silent open"
operation and cause the book-level operation to fail.

Assuming that one or more of the component files in the
book are version 5.5.x files, you have two options:

1) Open each component file in turn (dismissing the alert
message) and then explicitly save the file to convert it
to 7.0 format so that it will open without any message the
next time you attempt a book-level operation.

2) Open all the component files before doing the book-level
operation by using the Open All Files in Book command
(available if you hold down Shift when you pull down the
File menu). You will have to manually dismiss the warning
message for each file as it is opened. And don't forget to
save all the files (in 7.0 format) after performing the
book-level operation.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

Hi,

I use FM 7.1 with Windows XP.

I got a 500 page FM Book with 16 files including TOC and Index. When I
opened it was detected to be of version 5.5. I was also prompted to
Optimize for PDF size during conversion to pdf. But when doing that
(selecting the book), the files to which "Links are found" are opened. I
press 'OK' to open all the files. But the operation fails telling

[PDFSize] Error: Cannot open file ama-pre.fm.
  Error: Cannot open file ama-pre.fm.
[PDFSize] Dumping Error Information

If I Skip this file, same error is displayed for another file.
What is wrong in what I am doing? How do I get the optimization done?
Other than the size of PDF, how does it affect conversion to pdf.

  Thanks

I'm wrestling with conversion of a book that used our old FrameMaker

a new template set. The code paragraphs (with overrides) in the old
template used tabs to indent. The new template has a different
paragraph style for each level of indention, and defines no tabs in any
of the code paragraph styles.

My template-design sense would be that code paragraph styles should be
used to specify the indention level of the entire block of code,
indenting it to correspond with the body paragraphs it follows:

Code para at the Body para left margin

CodeIndent1 para at the BodyIndent1 para left margin

 etc

and then each flavor of code para should have tab stops defined on the
same grid. The code is in a fixed-width font, so as long as the body
para indention system and the character width of the code font can be
made to align (reasonably), I'd be happy.

But when I select text lines of the PDF that contain code and copy them
to the clipboard, then paste them into a text editor, all leading spaces
are omitted.
