Recommended version of Acrobat for FM 7.1

2006-12-05 Thread jopak...@comcast.net
I've been getting away with using Acrobat 5.0 with FrameMaker 7.1 (Windows XP
Pro) for some time now, but it looks like my luck has finally run out.

I installed Acrobat 5.0 and FrameMaker 7.1 on a new computer (Windows XP Media
Edition) and all appeared to be working fine until I opened the first PDF
distilled on this new machine.

It's a 200 page document and the 3rd page does not display properly (something
about error 122). I tried distilling the offending page separately and
replacing the problem page. I also tried distilling and replacing the offending
file (the TOC) . Finally I tried just deleting the offending page. But in every
case the file refuses to Save. When I try, I get a progress bar that goes to
about 80% before an error message pops up, referring again to error 122.

So, assuming that my problem is related to mis-matched versions of Acrobat and
FrameMaker, I'm wondering what version of Acrobat to purchase. Assuming the
latest version is not the best match for the version of Frame I've got, where
can I purchase it?

On the other hand if you've seen a less expensive fix to this kind of problem,
please point me in the direction. I"d much prefer spending the $$ on Christmas.

Thanks for your input.

Sincerely,
--

Why not just install the Distiller that came with FM 7.1?

If yo must use Acrobat 5.xx set the Distiller settings appropriately.

Current Online help standard

2006-12-05 Thread Rick Quatro
Adobe also announced an upcoming version of RoboHelp (and FrameMaker) at the
recent FrameMaker Chautauqua.

And to address one issue that Art did not talk about:
RoboHelp is not "on its way out". The ownership of the
company that publishes RoboHelp did change a couple
of times (eHelp was bought by Macromedia, and then
Macromedia was bought by Adobe), and along the way
most of the original developers left. But this spring at
the WinWriters conference, Adobe did something that
is completely unprecedented for them: they publicly
indicated that they were working on a new version of
RoboHelp with a target release date in the first half of
2007. Whether this is too little, too late is a question
for the marketplace to answer. But Adobe believes the
product itself is still viable and are investing resources
in it.

The one thing that is (arguably) on its way out is the
long-in-the-tooth Windows Help (.hlp) format. The new
Vista operating system will not include the WinHelp
engine, and it is still unclear whether a Vista-compatible
WinHelp viewer will be available for download from
Microsoft. The only flavor of application help that is
officially supported on Vista is HTML Help (.chm).
Vista itself has a new type of help, which is initially
only available for in-house use within Microsoft and

Use Condition Indicators setting is inconsistent

2006-12-05 Thread Paul Di Somma
Hello,

Using FM 7.0p492 with an unstructured book.

Each chapter in the book has one conditional setting which is "Index"
and is set to black.
When I compile, I get a Book Error Report with the message "Use
Conditional Indicators setting is inconsistent".

I checked that all 18 chapters are set correctly and consistently, but
the error message appears on 12 of the
chapters.

Any ideas would be most welcome.

My own preference is to single source in FM and output to OmniHelp or

In theory, there should be no reason why Acrobat 5
(hopefully updated to Acrobat 5.0.5 - get the update on
Adobe's web site at

should not work directly with Acrobat 5 unless you are using
the "save as PDF" feature.

I know of no Acrobat error messages that have numbers such
as "122" -- anything else in the error message? Any other
software that you are using in conjunction with both
FrameMaker and Acrobat (plug-ins, etc.)?

Did you try simply rebooting your system and running Acrobat

Why do you say that? You're only a point off the most current.

BTW...Acrobat and FM don't upgrade in lockstep. Currently, the
Acrobat version is Acrobat 8. If you contact Adobe, that is the only
version they'll sell you, though I'm sure you could find a reseller
to sell you 7, but why buy something obsolete?

You'll need a separate installer, but check with Adobe on a cross-platform

I've gotten these in the past & they're a bargain compared to the cost of

Current Online help standard

2006-12-05 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Please, what is the current standard for online help?
Is this now built into FrameMaker? Can I use 7.0 or do I need 7.2?

I've heard that RoboHelp is on its way out. If I develop a rather large doc
(~200pgs) in Robo, will I be sorely outdated?

  Thanks,
  Sue

Use Condition Indicators setting is inconsistent

To reconcile the differences, select all chapters in the book and
apply the condition and view setting at the book level...

Make sure that, in addition to having the condition indicators all the
same in all the chapters, that the condition is shown or hidden
consistently in all the chapters.

Hope that helps!

I believe it's a separate installation program, but I may be mistaken.
