You could always insert a Head 2 "Introduction" immediately after the Head 1 .

Framemaker's ability to import WordPerfect and PageMaker files

2007-01-11 Thread Rob Shell
I wonder if any Framies can help me?

Framemaker is supposed to import WordPerfect files. It does so, but only 5.1
files.

While on the subject of importing files, I have certainly not had much luck
importing any Pagemaker files despite the heavily advertised feature of the
latest release. It seems the best way is to go into the PM editor and take
out the text via the clipboard, story by story...

Does anybody know when the FM filters are updated? WP5.1 is more than 10
years old. So is Pagemaker, which we now know will never be updated.

I love FrameMaker by the way. Nothing like it.

Hi Bodvar,

I think I did my subscription from the web address you sent me. I sent
several e-mails to the list, and I have also sent messages to the list

In addition to this, I've been browsing the archives for specific info,
but it seems there is no searching tool for this list (I'm mainly
interested in using FrameMaker for XML authoring and development).

In the end, I think I'm going to join a different forum I've found for
FrameMaker users.

Thank you very much for your help.

Troubles with FrameUsers list.

2007-01-11 Thread Brad Anderson
Bodvar and Pedro,

Please send messages such as this to me in the future. Do not post
list admin messages to the list. I do not have any email message from
Pedro that were sent to the listadmin address nor is he subscribed to
the list. So if he sent email to the list, the messages would not
have been posted. I have subscribed Pedro to the list and he should
now be able to post.

The move from the old CMS system we used for FrameUsers.com to the
new one has consumed a lot more of my time than I anticipated. We
are testing the new site this week and I hope to bring it publicly
back online in the next week. The new functionality is superb and
we'll be bringing updated features online over the next month. I'll
make an announcement as soon as we've worked out a couple of
remaining bugs.

Thanks,

Brad

Looking for an editable output from Frame 7.2

2007-01-11 Thread michael.l...@thomson.com
Greg,

Regarding:
>Omsys.com's rtf export filter would do the best job if they want to
use Word because it mimics the tags pretty well.
>As soon as your client actually starts editing, though, they're going
to notice lots of discrepancies in appearance. Might not matter to
them though, if they aren't going to compare it to the FM version side
by side.

More than discrepancies. You should try it first. Mif2Go rtf output is
"editable" but it depends on what that consists of. Mif2Go basically
strips the automation from the file and puts in manual characters. For
example, all bullets and numbers in lists are like keyed entries. You
can attach and load your Word template, apply an automated style, but
you will still have the hard bullet or number to deal with. For
extensive or long term "editing" there will need to be a clever
automated method of removing the manual bullets and numbers. Unless
someone knows a trick that I don't.

Also cross-refs and variables become keyed characters, rather than
automated, and I think the non-breaking space or something in Frame
cross-refs is turned into a sort of o reverse bullet. Someone will want
those removed. There are other matters I don't immediately recall.
Someone will also want to resave the rtf output as doc before
editing--the rtf becomes unwieldy.

There are other limitations I don't recall offhand. But if you just want
a Frame format mirrored in Word, for temporary use, Mif2Go does well.
Definitely try it first to see if it will work for you and yours.

Problem with Bookmarks in PDFs coming from structured framemaker documents

2007-01-11 Thread Nollet, Lodewijk (Gent)
Hello all,

I am creating PDF-files from structured Framemaker files.

In the "Bookmark" section of the PDF Setup window I've selected the
"head" elements which I want to appear as bookmarks based on their
context label.
So what I have in the "Include elements" section is :
head (level 1)
head (level 2)
head (level 3).

In our EDD however is defined that IndexEntry elements can be part of
the head element.

When I create a pdf, the text of the IndexEntry elements is inserted in
the bookmarks along with the head text.

Is this a known problem? Or do we have to adapt the EDD so that the
IndexEntry elements are no longer part of the head elements?

Thanks

Lodewijk Nollet

PDF to framemaker

2007-01-11 Thread Kenneth C. Benson
PDF is mostly a one-way street. It's an end product. The text in a PDF is
set line by line and page by page. Any method of converting PDF back to
formatted text and graphics is going to involve a good deal of work and
judgment. PDFs are complex enough and generated from enough different source
applications that I can't imagine a tool that could do this for you with any
degree of reliability.

This is a known problem in FM7.0 (fixed in 7.1/7.2).

Not always. Where Word doesn't offer anything close, we do
output the Frame content as plain text. But for autonumbers
and xrefs, for example, there are other options.

>For example, all bullets and numbers in lists are like keyed entries. You
>can attach and load your Word template, apply an automated style, but
>you will still have the hard bullet or number to deal with. For

We considered supporting Word's regular "bullet and numbering"
feature, but decided not to because it is really unstable,
especially for large docs such as those commonly produced in
Frame. When you are producing Word docs for review purposes,
it's really best to use the default plain text, as that way
you can find the matching Frame para more easily to make any
corrections. If however you are migrating to Word, you can
choose to use SEQ fields which closely emulate Frame's own
autonumbering. That's what Word power users prefer, so Mif2Go
does produce them automatically on request. SEQ fields are
stable, and easily copied for new paragraphs.

>Also cross-refs and variables become keyed characters, rather than
>automated,

By default, xrefs remain *live* xrefs, with added hyperlinks
to emulate Frame capabilities. You can make them plain text if
you prefer. Variables are not well supported in Word, and do
become plain text.

>and I think the non-breaking space or something in Frame
>cross-refs is turned into a sort of o reverse bullet. Someone will want
>those removed.

Sounds like you have Word's settings to view special characters
on. You control that in Word, under Tools | Options | View.
We also use Word hidden text to support features that Word
doesn't allow directly, like refs to page numbers in another
document. If you turn on viewing of hidden text, you'll see
those; or you can turn off that Mif2Go feature and get plain
text page numbers. Your call.

>There are other matters I don't immediately recall.
>Someone will also want to resave the rtf output as doc before
>editing--the rtf becomes unwieldy.

True, especially if you have large bitmaps with 24-bit color
("millions of colors"), for which RTF lacks any compression,
or if you want to support multiple Word versions conveniently.

What I use, when forced to, is convert the PDF back to MS Word
(using PDF Converter Professional from Nuance) and then output
it in RTF and back into FrameMaker.

This is not perfect, since it needs cleanup after the final import
into FrameMaker, but it does the trick on the rare occasions when
the need arises. With surprisingly clean results, and much less
time than re-entering all the typing again.

But, I would not want to "automate" this process - the results would
be terrible without the final edits in FrameMaker after the RTF is
brought in. In other words, it is not something that allows me to "go
back and forth" on a daily basis!

RE: Looking for an editable output from Frame 7.2

Thanks

Thanks to Michael et all for comments on this topic.

I have always heard a lot of good things about this distribution list and
  know I know why! :)

I tried to access the home page for FMUG but it seems to be shut down
because it had become a victim of numerous hacker attacks? What is the story
behind this and are there plans to resurface the site?

Re: PDF to framemaker

("millions of colors"), for which RTF lacks any compression,
or if you want to support multiple Word versions conveniently.

guide I created for them in a format they can edit, not using Frame.
Then they want to be able to re-publish these files (again, not using
Frame) and have them look the same way they looked when I created
them in Frame.

So they have specified which application they don't wish to use, but not
which one they will use? Under those circumstances, you'd be justified
in delivering the data as XML and leaving it to them to sort out how to
format it. Data interchange between applications is a fundamental
feature of XML - in fact "XML shall support a wide variety of
applications" is design goal number 2 in the W3C recommendation (the W3C
equivalent of a standard).

I know I can save Frame files as html, xml, text, or rtf and edit them. But
I doubt that I can republish them and have them look like they did in Frame
without using Frame.

Need you concern yourself with that? Surely if they haven't gone to the
trouble of specifying what application they intend to use, they can't
hold you responsible for supporting it? Give them XML and let them worry
about reproducing the layout. They'll be back once they've had a lie
down and a good think about it...

Revision Bars that Appear in Document Footers (Not on Master Page)

2007-01-11 Thread Catudal & Rousseau
Hi:

We need to apply ripple revision bars to individual pages of a document to
indicate that data has moved but has not changed. Is it possible by way of
an attribute on any given element on a page to generate a revision bar that
appears to be located in the document footer, but that is not on the Master
Page?

Thanks!
