Re: Special Marker dialog box has disappeared
Here is another possible solution that doesn't require editing maker.ini. Open the marker dialog. Even though you can't see it, it's probably there. Press Alt+Space. This is a Windows shortcut that gives you keyboard control of windows and dialogs. Press m (for move). Either use the arrow keys to move the dialog or immediately click and drag. Don't move the mouse before clicking. By default, when you press m, the mouse pointer is placed on the title bar of the active window, so you can drag even though you can't see the title bar. You can experiment with some of the dialog boxes that are visible, just to see how the procedure works. Good luck! Ian Mike Wickham wrote: Thanks for the suggestion. right to left languages
Peter Courlis asked Is there a S/W application or DTP S/W that is used for Arabic, Farsi (left to right) languages in popular use, today? Dov replied: Yes, Microsoft Word (Windows only) provides this support. InDesign ME offers this support (both platforms); maybe future versions of InDesign might also natively support right-to-left I think it used to be the case on the Mac that right to left language docs were mainly created in Nisus (http://nisus.com/). The OSX upgrade of Nisus still does it, but you might want to enter Hebrew in the user forums search and read some of the posts. The new kid on the block is a word processor called Mellel (http://www.redlers.com/index.html) which looks like it would be well worth investigating. In fact, it may even be a plausible replacement for FrameMaker for (English) technical writing on the Mac. WWP Graphics Problem

Dennis, Windows has two versions of maker.ini: 1. There's a system-wide version in \Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker 7.x. 2. There is also a version in \Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Adobe\FrameMaker\7.x. The first file contains default settings for all users. The second file (one for each user) stores defaults for each user, to allow custom settings. If you change settings from the defaults, such as moving a palette, the new setting is stored here, where it won't affect other users. User settings take precedence over system default settings. So you probably just made the Markers= change in the wrong file. For what it's worth, my original maker.ini (file #1) shows "Markers=0, 20" while the version in my user settings (file #2) shows "Markers=85, 177". The latter position is what I see on screen. Here is another possible solution that doesn't require editing maker.ini. Open the marker dialog. Even though you can't see it, it's probably there. Press Alt+Space. This is a Windows shortcut that gives you keyboard control of windows and dialogs. Press "m" (for move). Either use the arrow keys to move the dialog or immediately click and drag. Don't move the mouse before clicking. By default, when you press "m", the mouse pointer is placed on the title bar of the active window, so you can drag even though you can't see the title bar. Since this file was originally a RoboHelp project, the graphics that originated from it are imported by reference and stored in a folder located on our network with the original RoboHelp files. These files are GIFs. Other graphics have been added from another network folder location, imported by reference, and these files are PNGs. Here's my problem: not all of the graphics from either folder location appear in the CHM file. Is there something I need to do in the Graphic Styles Default properties? I tried making additional Graphic Styles (PNG and GIF) and selecting those formats for the Format Value field, thinking that would help, but it didn't make any difference in the output. right to left languages
Peter Courlis asked "Is there a S/W application or DTP S/W that is used for Arabic, Farsi (left to right) languages in popular use, today?" Dov replied: "Yes, Microsoft Word (Windows only) provides this support. InDesign ME offers this support (both platforms); maybe future versions of InDesign might also natively support right-to-left" I think it used to be the case on the Mac that right to left language docs were mainly created in Nisus (http://nisus.com/). The OSX upgrade of Nisus still does it, but you might want to enter "Hebrew" in the user forums search and read some of the posts. The new kid on the block is a word processor called Mellel (http://www.redlers.com/index.html) which looks like it would be well worth investigating. In fact, it may even be a plausible replacement for FrameMaker for (English) technical writing on the Mac. Graeme Forbes

Converted Word file grows enormously
I converted a pretty large Word document by opening it in Frame, first saving it as a MIF, then saving it as FM The FM file initially appeared pretty OK. However after I scrolled throug the file (without making ANY changes), then saved it, the file grew enormously in size. Some specs: Initial Word document had about 256 pages, a TOC, lots of tables and embedded graphics Almost everything seemed to make it through the conversion OK. Perhaps a handful of graphics were dropped. FILESIZE (MB) Original Word file 5.0 MIF File after Conversion 11 FM file from MIF File (initial) 3.1 FM file after a litle scrolling 13 FM file after a little more scrolling38 Final FM file size~ 68 I also tried copying/pasting the contents of newly-converted file into a 'clean' new file. The size of that FM File 72 MB I also tried cnverting the initial Word file to RTF, then converting the RTF to MIF and FM. However, the results were the same. The behavior is also very consistent and repeatable. I have also converted quite a number of other Word docs to Frame lately without eny evidence of similar problems. Question: Has anyone seen this behavior before? Do you have any ideas of what the possible cause is (other than "something in the Word file is corrupted"), as well as possible fixes and/orworkarounds? Converted Word file grows enormously
My first guess would be that there were graphics embedded in the Word file that are now embedded in the FM file and are being converted to FM vector graphics. The better way to do this is to separate the graphics from Word before importing (by saving as an HTML file to spin the graphics files off), save the Word file as RTF (many people prefer text) and open that in FM. Them importing the graphics by reference. missing Marker dialog
Thank you Ian. The Alt-space, m, arrow-key maneuver worked, pulling the errant dialog back onto the visible screen. I have never been so glad to see a Marker dialog box. In answer to other questions: - The maker.ini setting (in the Program Files location) when the Marker dialog went missing was "Markers=0, 20", like many of the other settings. Not knowing then about the second version of maker.ini in \Documents and Settings, I don't know what values it contained. The horizontal value must have been large, because my screen resolution is 1600 by 1200. - Oddly, a search of my C drive turns up only one maker.ini, in Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker 7.1. However, the second version of the file is indeed present, as Mike Wickham indicated. After pulling the Marker dialog box into the visible area, closing and rebooting, that version of maker.ini shows the following: Markers=964, 357 It is good to know about this version of maker.ini in \Documents and Settings. - I must give a hearty thank you to everyone for their kind and detailed assistance. Art, Thanks for replying. There is merit in what you say but I have converted quite a number of documents with embedded graphics without encountering this problem. If it's not the type of graphics (WMF/EMF, maybe, instead of bitmaps?), here's a wild guess: Did the Word doc contain any OLE objects from another Office application? Richard -- Richard G. Has anyone seen this behavior before? Do you have any ideas of what the possible cause is (other than "something in the Word file is corrupted"), as well as possible fixes and/orworkarounds? Hey, Micheal I've seen similar behavior in Word docs that had TONS of tables. The only solution I could find was to break the file up, either in Word before import or in FrameMaker after. -- Rick Henkel Lead Systems Developer CSG Systems, Inc. http://rickhenkel.googlepages.com/index.htm

right to left languages
FrameMaker 8 does NOT support right-to-left languages (Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew) other than display and entry of their Unicode characters. This is not true "support." And Hebrew is not a "Cyrillic language." :-) - Dov > -Original Message- > From: framers-bounces+isaacs=adobe.com at lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers- > bounces+isaacs=adobe.com at lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Flato, Gillian > Sent: Thursday, July 26, 2007 3:49 PM > To: Ann Zdunczyk; Graeme R Forbes; framers at lists.frameusers.com > Subject: RE: right to left languages > > We just saw a presentation today by Adobe introducing Frame 8. Am I the only one who fights this "On the Screen" battle two dozen times a day?? I seems that XP squirrels dialogs and windows off screen at an alarming rate. Maybe some clever person can come up with a script that pulls EVERYTHING to the center of the screen. It would make me a happy camper. will white On Jul 26, 2007, at 11:19 AM, Dennis Davideit wrote: > Thank you Ian. ePublisher question
Look for the wwp-users yahoo group (http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/wwp-users/?yguid=70338513). It's taken me a bit to comprehend the ePP Formats, Targets and sundry directories. Format = changes to whatever the base help is you're using (i.e. CHM vs WWH) Targets = changes to your specific output. e.g. I have a help and a knowledgebase both based off of WebWorks Help 5.0. However, I want the look and feel for each to be different. Therefore I have two directories in my Target directory, one for each type of output. If I am making a change to BOTH my outputs, I do it in the Format/WebWorks Help 5.0 directory. Changes to specific to output, I put in the Target/Help or Target/Knowledgebase directories as appropriate. I started playing with a skin with my knowledgebase, and have had success making my changes in the Target directory. (I"m not on my work computer so I can't give you a directory structure right now.
