Need help with text justification

2007-08-15 Thread Fred Ridder
This sounds like the same issue that Mike Wickham reported last week.
(See the thread starting with his message "FrameMaker 8 justification
& auto letter spacing broken?" dated 8/7 if the list archive is working.)
It appears that the Automatic Letter Spacing function is significantly
broken in FrameMaker 8. Justification works OK if the function is
disabled (meaning only inter-word spacing is adjusted to achieve
justification), but does not justfy properly when you try to adjust
letter spacing as well (which is, of course, the proper way to do
professional looking justification...).

OK, I'm new to Frame 8 after a long hiatus (the last version I used was 6).

I am laying out a printed book (no XML, nothing fancy, just a book for
print). The client wants the right and left edges justified.

In the paragraph designer for my various styles, I've set the following:

Basic tab:

--Alignment is Justified.

Advanced tab:

--Automatic Hyphenation is selected. (I just accepted the defaults for the
hyphenation settings).

--Allow Automatic Letter Spacing is selected (and again I took the system
defaults on the settings).

The problem is that in Frame, on the screen, my right edge is knife-edge
perfect. Looks fabulous. Life is good. When I output to PDF or print
directly from Frame, the right edge is wiggly. It's not as ragged as it was
before with the text un-justified, but it certainly isn't what the client
wants.

What setting have I missed? Any ideas?

Tina:

Could be a difference between the sizes of screen and printer fonts. To
fix that:

Make sure Frame isn't running. Make a backup copy of your maker.ini
file (it's in the FrameMaker installation directory). Open maker.ini
and find the line that says "DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics=Off"; change it
to read "DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics=On". Save the maker.ini file and
restart Frame.

More on ePub 9.2 and Frame 8

2007-08-15 Thread Flato, Gillian
Somebody mentioned that ePub 9.2 may not work with the new features of
Frame 8.

So I did a test where I set the Frame condition to be an and condition.
(Show only text that is a + b, not a or b)

Then in ePub 9.2 I set the conditions to be "Use document Value"

It built the help file correctly. Only the text set to a + b displayed.

Thank you,

If I understand correctly only the first file
prints whatever you do (delete other files,
reorder them)...it's always the exact same
behavior. So the individual files seem OK.

Does the book update correctly or do you get any
warning msgs (numbering, color)?

Book problems

2007-08-15 Thread James Dyson
Thanks for all of your help. I just figured out a workaround. I noticed
the first file in the book was the only one that I couldn't save as a
PDF. The culprit was the last page of the first file. There was a text
field that existed in duplicate in both the left master page and body
page. I tried deleting the body page text box (since the text is static)
but that didn't solve it. For some reason I had to override the "blank"
master page we use and add a text box on top of it in the body page. If
I get more time I'll experiment for a better solution, but I can work
with this for now.

Thanks again,
Jim

Book problems

Hi all,

I'm using Framemaker 7.2 and I've run into a problem I've never seen
before. I have a small book, consisting of just four files (15 pages)
and a TOC. I can print the files within the book individually without
any problems. When I try to print the book, only the first file prints

STACK:

I've also tried saving the book as a PDF, and the .log file listed the
very same error message shown above. The PDF failed to generate.

I've tried the following solutions to no avail:
Tried other printers
Creating a new book and adding those files to the new book
Deleting individual files
Reordering files
Printing the book using a different PC and copy of Framemaker
Printed another, existing book and verified that I can still do that
Gotten assurance from IT that there is no known significance on their
end to the error message shown

Thanks,
Jim Dyson

Book problems

2007-08-15 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, James:

Usually an offending command statement displays the name of a
PostScript command that is somehow incorrect at that location in the
PostScript code, for some reason or other.

If your company initials are identified as the offending command, it's
possible that one or more of your files is corrupted in a way that
confuses the printing process.

One approach to remove corruption from FM files is to save a backup
copy of each file to a new name or location, then save each as MIF
(File > Save As > Maker Interchange), then open each MIF file (File >
Open) and save as the original file name, overwriting the original
file. Your book file is already created new from scratch, so it's
probably already cleaned up.

Save all files, keep all files open, and try printing again.

Let us know how this works.

RE: Book problems

2007-08-15 Thread James Dyson
Thanks for all of your help. I just figured out a workaround. I noticed
the first file in the book was the only one that I couldn't save as a
PDF. The culprit was the last page of the first file. There was a text
field that existed in duplicate in both the left master page and body
page. I tried deleting the body page text box (since the text is static)
but that didn't solve it. For some reason I had to override the "blank"
master page we use and add a text box on top of it in the body page. If
I get more time I'll experiment for a better solution, but I can work
with this for now.

Thanks again,
Jim

Hi, Jim

Make sure all your files are consistent in the book in page layouts, sizes,
pagination, etc. Is the printer time out set to low?

Book problems

2007-08-15 Thread James Dyson
Hi all,

I'm using Framemaker 7.2 and I've run into a problem I've never seen
before. I have a small book, consisting of just four files (15 pages)
and a TOC. I can print the files within the book individually without
any problems. When I try to print the book, only the first file prints
and then a page prints with the following error message:

ERROR: undefined
OFFENDING COMMAND: KVH? (KVH is my company name)
STACK:
72
469
-462
-69

I've also tried saving the book as a PDF, and the .log file listed the
very same error message shown above. The PDF failed to generate.

I've tried the following solutions to no avail:
Tried other printers
Creating a new book and adding those files to the new book
Deleting individual files
Reordering files
Printing the book using a different PC and copy of Framemaker
Printed another, existing book and verified that I can still do that
Gotten assurance from IT that there is no known significance on their
end to the error message shown

Thanks,
Jim Dyson

FrameMaker 8 and ePub 9.2

2007-08-15 Thread Art Campbell
I would guess the gotcha or reason to upgrade wasn't backward
compatibility, but compatibility or support for the new features in FM
8. Unicode, multiple conditionals, etc
