fractions

2008-02-26 Thread Joel Wilhelm
I am looking for a way to write fractions inline with my text, without using
the math functions. I looked at the Frame 8 Character Sets manual, and I see
1/4, 1/2 and 3/4, but nothing else. Is there a way to generate fractions
without just writing them like I am here (i.e. 1/4)?

GIFs cropped when creating PDF

2008-02-26 Thread Pat Christenson
Hi -

I have a client who's having a problem when saving a Frame doc into
PDF. Some of the GIFs (screenshots) are being cropped. The GIFs are
on landscape (rotated) pages but the problem doesn't occur on every
landscape page with a GIF. The problem does not occur when creating a
Tabloid-size PDF, only when creating a LetterSize one. The graphics
don't extend outside the main text area. In one case, the same GIF is
used twice and it's fine in the first instance and cut off in the
second.

I got the same results when testing her doc, using Save As PDF
(that's her procedure) creating a .PS and running it through Distiller.

Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

2008-02-26 Thread Owen, Clint
We used to have a similar problem with our logo on landscape pages. If
we rotated the logo after it was placed on the page it would be cut off
in the PDF. The solution was to create a rotated version of the logo
that did not need to be re-oriented after insertion.

fractions

2008-02-26 Thread Mike Wickham
> Is there a way to generate fractions

One method is to buy any of the various fraction fonts available. Go to
myfonts.com or other font seller and search for "fractions." Yes, you still
have to enter them by typing the individual characters, but they will be
properly sized and kerned. You'll have to apply a character format to them
that uses the appropriate fraction font, or they may display as other
characters, based on the paragraph format.

Some of the "Pro" fonts include Unicode font numerators, denominators, and
fraction slash. You can copy and paste them from Character Map, since you
have FM8. Again, you'll have to apply a character format to them, unless the
font is the same one used for the whole paragraph.

2008-02-26 Thread martin.sm...@golehtek.com
Hi Joel,

You can try one of the fractions fonts available from Adobe. OpenType
and PostScript versions are both available.

http://store1.adobe.com/cfusion/store/html/index.cfm?store=OLS-US&event=displayFontPackage&code=234

These fonts allow you to type the numerator and denominator independently.

Thank you all for your responses. While your responses are accurate,
they do not explain why the files can be opened on my colleagues PC's
network drive in under 10 seconds, but not on my network drive.

I'vd asked IT to check my network connections, etc. and they claim all
is well with their network (surprise, surprise...). They're claiming
it's FM that's having trouble. Is there a specific FM config option that
may be slowing down the files that I could check?

Thanks,

Re: Using PNG graphics

2008-02-26 Thread martin . smith
I would add to Bill's comments and suggest that if you need to
generate 8,000 vector-based images out of Corel, you can automate the
process of opening, saving, and closing the Corel drawings using
WinBatch: http://www.winbatch.com/

WinBatch is an event-driven scripting language that can automate
repetitive tasks in most Windows applications and is an ideal choice
for programs that do not provide an API.

You could then write a simple script in the FrameScript language that
updates the pathnames of all your imported graphics to recognize the
new file extension, replacing *.png with *.eps for example.

Modularised EDDs?

2008-02-26 Thread Hedley Finger

Lynne Price, Kay Whatley and others:

The DITA DTDs are modularised to allow ready re-use, specialisation
and maintenance.

Is there any way to create a modularised EDD, with a skeleton host
file and modules imported as text insets? I have been studying the
Adobe documentation for developing structured applications but cannot
find any reference to using text insets in this way. I read
somewhere a couple of years ago that EDD fragments always require a
root element that matches an element in the main host EDD skeleton,
which would rather undermine this idea. But perhaps there is a
special root element that can map onto ANY element in the host EDD --
a new feature in FM8?

It seems to me that both the Adobe and Leximation EDDs could benefit
from modularisation that exactly maps onto the *.dtd and *.mod files
of the DITA schemas/DTDs.

Regards,
Hedley
