burning eyes

2008-05-13 Thread Hedley Finger

Frank:

There is an electrostatic field in front of a CRT monitor -- you have
probably noticed crackling from electrostatic discharge sometimes when
you put your fingers on the glass. The field attracts dust particles to
the airspace between your eyes and the screen so that, along with not
blinking enough, etc. your eyes are irritated by the dust.

You can clean the glass with an antistatic fluid on a *slightly* damp
cloth with the monitor off, otherwise you can enjoy 25,000 V if a small
amount of liquid runs down the glass behind the bezel. Or a 1970s
ioniser -- remember them? Or get an LCD screen that has no
electrostatic field.

Regards,
Hedley

Convert HTML files to FrameMaker files

2008-05-13 Thread Hedley Finger

You can could try opening the HTML file in a late-model Word or
OpenOffice.org, then save out as *.doc or *.rtf. Then you can open
either in FrameMaker, complete with styles. You can use FM's style
mapping to substitute desired styles.

Avoiding artefacts in Inkscape SVG --> FrameMaker, PDF

2008-05-13 Thread Hedley Finger

I have been using FrameMaker with DITA-FMx to develop a book. In
FrameMaker you can create composite graphics consisting of imported
pixmaps plus text frames, text lines (graphics text), rules, shapes,
etc. These do not export to DITA XML so I have been creating composite
graphics in Inkscape.

Unfortunately, when imported into FrameMaker you often get strange
artefacts: rules that were never drawn in the first place, random
rectangles overlaying the objects, etc. I tried exporting to PDF via
the Cairo engine but then my clipped pixmaps didn't (although, oddly,
they always imported perfectly into FM!).

The answer is to save as standard SVG in the Inkscape Save As dialogue,
ignoring all the dire warnings about losing Inkscape-specific aspects.
Be careful: this Save As turns into an "export from" because, when you
try to close the "saved" file, Inkscape informs you that it is not saved
and do you want to save it with Inkscape features. This will overwrite
the file you just "exported" unknowingly.

Anyway, this seems to solve all the problems with artefacts. I mention
it to the DITA and FrameMaker community in case this affects other
editors or tools.

Regards,
Hedley

FrameMaker on Japanese OS

2008-05-13 Thread Yosuke Ichikawa
Paul,

Same here. When I press the Asian language features: [Information]
button in the Preferences dialog box, I get the same message. I'm
running FM 8.0 on XP Japanese, in Japan, FWIW; I've just installed the
program with English UI (it's the same program). No trouble with the
actual language features, but as you say, the dialog is rather odd.

Framemaker uses

2008-05-13 Thread Deirdre Reagan
Hi Robin/Will (?)

I use autonumbering in Word all the time and have very few problems
with it. I've repaired more bolloxed autonumbering jobs than I can
remember.

Autonumbering in Word is fairly easy, once one knows how to do it.

I'd be happy to help anyone who needs help with autonumbering.

FrameMaker on Japanese OS

2008-05-13 Thread Paul Findon
Hi Yosuke,

Glad to know it's not just my setup. I guess we can file this one
under "bug."

Incidentally, when I ran Update from the Help menu, I had to quit FM
manually while the update downloaded, otherwise the update failed. I
remembered reading about this on the list but couldn't search the
archives because frameusers.com has been down for weeks.
freeframers.org has a working archive search tool. Brad, what's
happening to frameusers? Please can we have a search facility.

Long Figure Tiles in FrameMaker 7.2 Windows

2008-05-13 Thread Brenda Waltermeyer
I have a document that has very long Figure Titles, but the author only
wants part of the title in the List of Figures when it is generated. Is
there a way to do this so I don?t have to do it manually every time I
generate the list.

For Example:

Example of Clutter Doppler Spectrum Computed from Original Lipa and Barrick
Code for a SWH of 6 ft from 35 Relative to the Radar Look Direction, Showing
that the Positive Doppler Peak Due to First-Order Bragg Scattering is Larger
in Amplitudes than the Negative Peak Due to Increased Wave Amplitudes
Propagating Towards the Radar

What should appear in the List of Figures: (Red text will not appear in the
List of Figures when generated)

Example of Clutter Doppler Spectrum Computed from Original Lipa and Barrick
Code for a SWH of 6 ft from 35 Relative to the Radar Look Direction, Showing
that the Positive Doppler Peak Due to First-Order Bragg Scattering is Larger
in Amplitudes than the Negative Peak Due to Increased Wave Amplitudes
Propagating Towards the Radar

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Well, your red example text got trashed in the list server, so you
don't really have an example.

What I'd do, though, is use two tags. One for the Figure Title text
that shows up in the LOF and a second tag (FigTitle2) with matching
format attributes. Set the first one so that it paginates as a run-in
head, and you won't be able to tell in the book where they begin and
end. But the LOF will only pick up the Figure Title.

You can use Google. Enter " site:frameusers.com" (sans
quotes). Or you can browse the archives (by thread, subject, author, or
date) at: http://lists.frameusers.com/pipermail/framers/

That said, a Google search for "framemaker update site:frameusers.com"
turned up some posts about the 8.0.1 update, but nothing about the issue
you mentioned. Maybe browsing the archives around the date of those
posts will turn up something.

Hi all:

I know this topic was just covered, and I've searched for it in the
archives, but I'd like also to get your opinions.

I've been told that Framemaker: Classroom in a Book is an excellent
resource for learning FM. But on Amazon, the reviews are very poor.

Framemaker 7: The Complete Reference by O'Keefe has good reviews, but
it doesn't seem to be available anymore.

Framemaker 6: Beyond the Basics by Jahred has outstanding reviews but
it also is no longer available.

Any suggestions?

API documentation with references to Javadocs documentation

2008-05-13 Thread Ron Miller
Hi:
I have a JavaDocs reference. My client has asked me to write an API
document in Frame with references to the JavaDocs documentation. The
goal of the document is to provide further explanation and examples
along with a context for usage beyond what is provided in the
JavaDocs. In addition, the client wants to provide documentation on
how to use Web Services instead of a Java object.

I've been a tech writer for a long time, but I'm in new territory
here. I'm wondering if there is a standard way to approach this (or
if we are covering new ground). Can anyone point me to resources to
get me started.

One thing I'm having trouble with is deciding how much JavaDocs
information I should include in the Frame reference and how much I
should simply provide links or references to. If anyone has any ideas
on how I can started, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Ron

MS Word Numbering (was RE: FrameMaker uses)

2008-05-13 Thread Lester C. Smalley
I for one would appreciate understanding the 'proper' way to handle
numbering in Word. For me, it would help to fix garbaged numbers in
document I receive to convert to SGML - numbering is an issue because if
it's wrong, the structure requires a lot of manual correction.

If you folks who actually can get it to work, reliably and consistently,
would not mind creating some sort of basic tutorial or simplified
procedure list re numbering in Word, I'm sure a great many folks on this
list would benefit.

Long Figure Titles in FrameMaker 7.2 Windows

2008-05-13 Thread Art Campbell
What I'd do, is use two tags. One for the Figure Title text
that shows up in the LOF and a second tag (FigTitle2) with matching
format attributes. Set the first one so that it paginates as a run-in
head, and you won't be able to tell in the book where they begin and
end. But the LOF will only pick up the Figure Title.

Long Figure Titles in FrameMaker 7.2 Windows

The list doesn't accept HTML, RTF, or attachments -- only plain text. This is
to protect list members from potentially harmful messages.

My first idea is to convince the author that this is really dumb. Instead of an
absurdly long Figure Title pgf, each figure could have a short Figure Title pgf
followed by a Figure Caption pgf:

"Figure 8-23: A Short Identifying Title for This Figure

"A long-winded explanation of the figure, how it was created, and what it looks
like. This might go on for several lines. The title might be bold, and this pgf
the same font, but not bold. Or this one might be a smaller font. It would, of
course, be set to Keep With Previous."

My second idea is that you could still use Art's suggestion of a run-in head,
but you'd need multiple run-in heads to accommodate the discontinuous
inclusions/deletions. For instance, for the example you cite, you'd need 4 pgfs:

Example of Clutter Doppler Spectrum Computed from
Original Lipa and Barrick Code for a SWH of 6 ft from 35 Relative to
the Radar Look Direction, Showing that the Positive Doppler Peak Due
to First-Order Bragg Scattering is Larger in Amplitudes than the Negative Peak
Due to Increased Wave Amplitudes Propagating Towards the Radar

FigTitle1-3 are run-in heads. FigTitle1 and FigTitle3 are both included in the
LOF spec on the ref page. You could accommodate additional fragmentation with
additional tags, but this gets pretty absurd pretty fast. :-)

HTH!

Long Figure Titles in FrameMaker 7.2 Windows

2008-05-13 Thread Lester C. Smalley
Apart from getting the author to reduce the title to some reasonable length,
the only way I can see to handle this is to use conditional text to hide the
fragments that should not appear in the LOF. The LOF will be set to HIDE the
"don't include" text and all the chapters will show it.

This will trigger warnings when you update or print the files, but you actually
want the condition settings to be different for the LOF file, so you may safely
ignore the messages.

You can use a combination of conditional text, copy special, and find/replace.

* Create a character tag to mark the text to be or dropped from the
TOC. Define the all the character tag properties as As Is, using
Commands > Set Window To As Is, so it doesn't change any of the
selected text's visible properties. The tag is retained in the
generated TOC.

* Create a condition tag In the generated TOC, and apply it to an
example word. Use Edit > Copy Special to copy the condition from the
insertion point location to the clipboard.

* In the generated TOC, use Find/Replace to find all occurrences of
the character tag by pasting; this applies the condition to the tagged
text.

* Hide the condition to hide the text.

Each time you regenerate the TOC, you'll need to repeat the
Find/Replace All operation. You may want to show the indicators on the
conditionalized text, to verify that the tagging is accurate.

FrameMaker 8.0.3 Update Now Available via Adobe Updater

2008-05-13 Thread Dov Isaacs
The FrameMaker 8.0.3 update is now available via the Adobe Updater.
It will be available via Adobe's website in the very near future.

- Dov

Per the "readme"...

List of major issues resolved in this update.

* Extended characters have extra preceding space when using Arial Unicode MS

* FM catalogs don't sort properly.

* DITA Conref does not get resolved in some cases.

* Some higher code point characters are dropped on MIF open

* In documents with Japanese, Chinese and Korean combination fonts, quotation
marks look different than in FM7.x

* While using Combined Fonts, non-Asian characters present in the Asian font
are displayed using the Asian font instead of the non-Asian fonts.

* Random letters disappear from textline present in oval within anchored Frame.

* Use of page range in Index randomly adds a couple of question marks left and
right in the generated index file.

* Characters become invisible on the screen on the next line while hyphenating
words just before the accented chars.

* The NextPfgTag remains the same when pressing Enter at the beginning of the
line.

* FM crashes when a document containing hypertext (spread over two lines) to
marker is saved.

* FM spellchecker does not make use of user.dct entries

* History palette does not record typing command in textline.

* FM crashes on saving a file after deleting split-ed text line.

* For a 3d imported by reference, on moving it from hidden to show all after
applying conditional text, the referenced path is lost and has facets which
are for u3d imported as copy

* Pressing space button at the start of line places cursor at the end of line.

* Drag fails if the target happens to be a locked range.

* FM crashes when a graphic file with object properties dialog open is
overwritten at the system.

* Importing object to the second file when "Quick Access Bar" and "Formatting
Bar" are open and then closing the file, crashes FM.

* Converting a cross-reference to text crashes FrameMaker when the format of
the cross-reference has been edited.

* Performing a find change using the backwards option leads to a crash.

* Change All operation of a character leads to crash.

* When an equation is applied in conditional text and hidden, it results in
crash.

* The hyphenation of words in old netherland language changes character case.

* In Netherland language words get corrupted when unhyphenation is done with
the words which have dieresis.

* Garbage characters are shown in Tab stop list box if a legacy file containing
higher ANSI characters in Align field of decimal tab is opened in FM 8.

* Japanese tab stops do not work in FM 8.

2008-05-13 Thread Deirdre Reagan
Hi:

I've had a number people ask for the workshop, and I've sent it on.
The workshop is for formatting Headings 1 through 9.

I will be writing up the directions for formatting other levels, such
as 1., (1), a., (a), etc.

The concepts are exactly the same, so if you get the Heading 1 - 9
logic, you can create the other levels. They just involve creating a
new style for each new level, which is accomplished by right clicking
New Style in the upper box of the Styles and Formatting dialog box,
and naming the new style whatever you want.

I tend to use Style1, Style2, etc.

But as I said, I'll write up that workshop as well and send it on to
anyone interested.

The tutorials are already on the web, Lester. You may have to search for them a
bit. I no longer have the URLs. Maybe others on this list do.

And as another poster replied, it's essential that everyone who touches a Word

Problems when exporting to PDF from FM8

2008-05-13 Thread Erin Huff
Hi All,
I have found a problem with exporting a FM8 book to PDF.
When I export/save as PDF and then open the file in Acrobat I will usually find
that some of my information (Headers, table rows, variables, etc...) are
missing from my PDF, even though they are present in the FM8 file.
I always update and save the book and all included files before exporting.
I have tried exporting to PDF every single way I can from FM and it will not
export all the information.
I have the latest updates for FM8.
Am using Distiller 7.0 and Acrobat Professional 7.0
The last time I tried to PDF I spend over thirty minutes trying to PDF and
finally had to have a coworker PDF for me.
Does anyone know of a way to solve this?
Thanks,

Autonumbering in Word is fairly easy, once one knows how to do it.

Re: FrameMaker on Japanese OS

Is
there a way to do this so I don¹t have to do it manually every time I
generate the list.

Thanks

Re: Long Figure Tiles in FrameMaker 7.2 Windows

2008-05-13 Thread Art Campbell

Problem saving image with border to PDF

2008-05-13 Thread Adam Schweitzer
Running Framemaker 8p276 (behaviour was the same under p273, but not
under FM 7.2), with Acrobat 8.

I have a document which has a border (just a rectangle) around an image
(as well as some text). Everything shows up fine in Frame, but when I
save to pdf using file->save as pdf, everything but the image appears.
If I remove the border, the image appears fine. The "bring to front"
and "send to back" options on the graphics menu don't seem to help.

Any ideas what's going on here and how to fix?

Deirdre

Thanks,
Ron

HTH!

RE: Long Figure Titles in FrameMaker 7.2 Windows

2008-05-13 Thread Lester C. Smalley
Apart from getting the author to reduce the title to some reasonable length,
the only way I can see to handle this is to use conditional text to hide the
fragments that should not appear in the LOF. The LOF will be set to HIDE the
"don't include" text and all the chapters will show it.

This will trigger warnings when you update or print the files, but you actually
want the condition settings to be different for the LOF file, so you may safely
ignore the messages.

Re: MS Word Numbering (was RE: FrameMaker uses)

And as another poster replied, it's essential that everyone who touches a Word
doc knows how to handle the numbering (and uses the same Word template).

Thanks,
