Table Continuation variable in table title

I want to update a table format to include the Table continuation variable in
the table title, so it is always there when I insert this type of table. I
cannot seem to discover how to do this. I know that someone out there has the

RE: Problems when exporting to PDF from FM8

2008-05-20 Thread Diane Gaskill
I am seeing the same errors, except that I print to PS using Adobe PDF and
then distill to PDF. Headings, headers, and footers are sometimes munged,
but only during the first few pages of the file. the errors show up on the
screen as well as in print.

First, I'm going to update FM to 8.03 and then reprint to PS and distill.

I'm going to change the font and see if that fixes the problem. All of the
munged items use Tahoma. I'll also try changing the job options settings,
like embedding the fonts and see if that changes anything.

Meanwhile, if any of you know a fix or a workaround for this, I'd appreciate
it if you would post iot to the list.

Thanks,

Diane Gaskill

Is your coworker successfully creating PDFs from the books that give you

Are there any errors recorded in the log files?

It could be a font problem. Go to Distiller's Adobe PDF Settings dialog,

Booklet function with Framemaker

Hey

Is there a plugin which enables to create a booklet with Framemaker. I
am thinking of a function where for example page 1 and page 62 is

side of the paper.

Fwd: Booklet function with Framemaker

2008-05-20 Thread Art Campbell
The usual way to do this is to paginate the file normally and print
the file to PDF. Then use pre-press tools such as Quite Imposing
(there are many others that do the same thing) to set up the
imposition pattern. Note that it is a pre-press tool.

Most FM users can get into trouble with this if they're doing the work
for a commercial printer because the printer knows his equipment and
its required workflow better than the author. Because the author
doesn't work with the printer's equipment and is attempting to do a
job for which they aren't qualified, the author is likely to create
more work for the printer instead of less.

It's probably safe if you're designing a booklet that you think
someone would download from a www site and print on a home printer or
if you're printing a few copies for yourself on your own printer. But
even there you're likely to create a file that many people can't print
accurately because printer drivers print multi-page duplex files in
different ways. Again, unless you know the equipment and software in
use, it's hard to predict the right imposition pattern.

Cheers,
Art

Re: another table question

2008-05-20 Thread Art Campbell
Not automatically generated words controlled directly by the table format, no.

However, you can set up a series of paragraph tags, one for each
column, and add text to each one's Autonumbering field. If the tag is
in the correct Heading Cell, the text will be too.

In most cases, if you create a table, set it up with the correct tags
in the correct columns, and then open and save the settings in Table
Designer, the next time you create a table, the tags should show up as
the default setup. I haven't tested this with multiple different tags,
though, just with one tag in each column. But that's the way I'd try
to automate it. Worst case is that you'd have to change a couple tags
after you create the table.

And, if you have FrameScript, you could also do the automatic words
with a script.

Re: another table question

2008-05-20 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Leah,

Not text per se, but since the paragraph formats for each cell are stored
with the table format, you could use formats that have autonumbers to define
the text you want. Here are the general steps you can use:

1) Insert a table with the desired format and the number of columns that you
would normally use.

2) Click in each heading cell and create a paragraph format with the
autonumber set to the text you want for each cell.

3) When you are done, open the Table Designer and click Update All.

The next time you insert one of these tables, you will get your heading
text.

Re: another table question or automatic text in a heading row

2008-05-20 Thread Leah Smaller
I was hoping to avoid this solution, but if ya gotta, ya gotta. And guess
what - there is a gotcha.
One of the columns is narrow, so the 2 word text wraps around. When these 2
words are the autonumber value, they do not wrap around. They are squeezed
onto one line and the second work overlays the first word! Any suggestions?
FYI, I tried putting \t between the words in the autonumber field - no go.

[Accordion] Booklet function with Framemaker

2008-05-20 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hello,

Following the topic on issuing booklets from Frame (straight from Frame ou
through Acrobat), here is an extra question: how do you (and do you have to, or
is it the printer job?) prepare your document when the final format has been
agreed to be an accordion booklet?

I am facing the problem today, since I have to issue a getting started guide
in accordion format (6,5 cm x 10,5 cm), 10 pages.

Do the tools you previously mentioned (Quite Imposing / CleanPDF) have this
kind of feature?

I am using FM 17.2 on PC.

Thanks for your help,

Mathieu.

Re: [Accordion] Booklet function with Framemaker

2008-05-20 Thread Art Campbell
I believe that it does, but again, if you're having this printed
professionally and you receive specific instructions from the printer
that they want something non-standard, it is usually better to give
the printer a clean PDF file and let them do the pagination and
imposition.
That's part of their job; what you or your client is paying them to do.

That being said, an accordion fold card would use standard FM set up
of sequential pages. Page 1 is the cover and as you open the
accordion, 2,3,4, and 5 follow. Flip it over and 6,7,8,9, and 10
follow. So there isn't any unusual imposition required.

A \t adds a tab stop which isn't going to do anything unless you also
set up a tab stop in the para tag.

See if it'll take a \r to force a return after the first word. That
should work, but it doesn't take on my system.

However, em spaces do work. Try putting a \sm or two between your
words to force a break.

One of the columns is narrow, so the 2 word text wraps around. When these 2
words are the autonumber value, they do not wrap around. They are squeezed
onto one line and the second work overlays the first word! Any suggestions?
FYI, I tried putting \t between the words in the autonumber field - no go.

Not automatically generated words controlled directly by the table format,
 no.

Ignore missing files on open not possible

2008-05-20 Thread Klaus Daube
Dear all,

After finding a note from my first FM8 experience last fall about this issue,
I'm
sorry to present this issue again:

FM 8.0.2 on XP SP2, 1GB RAM, plenty of disk space on both machines.

A - on the workstation everything works as expected
B - on the laptop when opening a file whose pictures can not be found,
and activating ignore this/all missing files nothing happens.
I can only close the dialog and go back to the workstation to handle
this file.

The FM files in question can be on a hard-disk, on an USB stick or an USB-disk
- this
does not matter. The images were on the same drive as the fm files, hence the
paths
found in the (binary) files are relative.

The files are FM7, hence prior to the 'missing graphics' message I get the
message
about changing version.

On the laptop I now have removed Acrobat stuff and FrameMaker 8 and then
re-installed
Acrobat 8 and FrameMaker 8, 8.0.1, 8.0.2 = no positive result.

Converting the files on the workstation to FM8 then transfer to the laptop and
open
them with FM8 = does not help either (problem originally occurred with FM 8
files).

Re: Ignore missing files on open not possible

2008-05-20 Thread Art Campbell
Klaus,

With all respect, this looks and sounds as if it's a configuration
problem on the laptop, not a FM bug or issue. Something isn't
identical...

Are the Windows user name and group memvership set up exactly the same
on both machines? Exactly, letter / case matches?

The FM setup is the same? Can you copy maker.ini file from one to the
other and nothing breaks? (BTW, there is a 8.0.3 patch out now...)

Virus checker is the same on both systems?

RE: Booklet function with Framemaker

2008-05-20 Thread Dov Isaacs
I would most strongly endorse the Quite Imposing and Quite Imposing Plus
plug-ins from Quite Software. I've been using them for a number of years
as my imposition tool of choice when not having the luxury of going out
for professional printing. The software is highly reliable and efficient
with a tremendous amount of functionality. Page imposition and booklet making

Ann: GlossBase Available for Download - A free application for generating glossaries

2008-05-20 Thread martin . smith
GolehTek, LLC is pleased to announce the release of GlossBase Personal
Edition, a freely-available application that greatly enhances the
glossary features of Adobe FrameMaker.

GlossBase allows you to define glossary terms using an unlimited
number of paragraphs, tables, graphics, and equations. GlossBase
encodes terms and definitions in XML and stores them in a database.

When you are ready to generate a glossary for a FrameMaker book,
GlossBase compares every word combination from your FrameMaker
chapters against the database and automatically builds a glossary of
relevant terms.

If you are using WebWorks ePublisher Pro, GlossBase can also insert
the markers and apply the character formats necessary for glossary
definitions to automatically appear in a pop-up window in the on-line
help.

GlossBase is compatible with FrameMaker versions 7.x and above.
GlossBase also requires FrameScript version 4.1 or later.

GlossBase is available for download from the Free Scripts section of
the GolehTek web site at http://www.golehtek.com.

I use it to do two main things, but I know it can do more:

- Collapse bookmarks so only the chapter titles show

- Make sure the file opens to the first page of the PDF

I'll add that the TimeSavers menu in FM and GUI interface in the latest

enjoyable to use.

Thai Docs/Font problem in FM8

Hi All,

I'm running FM8.0p273 on WinXP. I have a couple of Thai documents that
were created with an AngsanaUPC font. In Frame 7, they show up fine and
can be manipulated, printed, etc. In Frame 8, the characters turn to
garbage. This happens on my laptop as well as another machine. I've
tried reapplying the font and changing it to Angsana New, but nothing
works. I took an old laptop and loaded Frame 7 onto it, and the Thai
documents open fine. Has anyone else seen this problem in Frame 8 or know
how to fix it?
TIA.

Problem solved; the answer is in the User Guide, and it's fairly
clear. I had to look up the Danish alphabet, then use it on the
reference page to re-order the index group titles and to replace the
$alphabetics building block.

Of course, if someone knows an easier way I could have done this, or
knows of any pitfalls inherent in changing sort order (other than the
obvious one of getting the order wrong), you response would be
helpful.

Problems when exporting to PDF from FM8

2008-05-20 Thread Diane Gaskill
I am seeing the same errors, except that I print to PS using "Adobe PDF" and
then distill to PDF.

Is your coworker successfully creating PDFs from the books that give you
trouble? Then you need to analyze what the differences are between your
setup and your coworker's.

Are there any errors recorded in the log files?

It could be a font problem. Go to Distiller's Adobe PDF Settings dialog,
Fonts page, and make sure that it's set to embed fonts. And set When
embedding fails to Cancel job. That way, if it's a missing (or
unembeddable) font, at least you'll know. :-)

Booklet function with Framemaker

2008-05-20 Thread Andersen, Verner Engell VEA
Hey

Is there a plugin which enables to create a booklet with Framemaker. I
am thinking of a function where for example page 1 and page 62 is
printed on one side of the paper and page 2 and page 61 on the other
side of the paper.

Cheers,
Art

Hello Verner,

I'm not sure there is a Plug-in for Framemaker that does it, but Quite Imposing
(Plus) is a simple-to-use tool that creates booklets with PDF documents, see

There is no way to do this automatically with FrameMaker. If you have
FrameScript, you could automate this with a script.

Hi,

A simple solution would be to create a regular PDF file
and then print a booklet to a PDF file via Acrobat.

CutePDF is cheap and is able to do this:

another table question

2008-05-20 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Leah,

Not "text" per se, but since the paragraph formats for each cell are stored
with the table format, you could use formats that have autonumbers to define
the text you want. Here are the general steps you can use:

1) Insert a table with the desired format and the number of columns that you
would normally use.

2) Click in each heading cell and create a paragraph format with the
autonumber set to the text you want for each cell.

3) When you are done, open the Table Designer and click Update All.

The next time you insert one of these tables, you will get your heading
text.

another table question or automatic text in a heading row

I am facing the problem today, since I have to issue a "getting started guide"
in accordion format (6,5 cm x 10,5 cm), 10 pages.

Do the tools you previously mentioned (Quite Imposing / CleanPDF) have this
kind of feature?

I am using FM 17.2 on PC.

Thanks for your help,

Mathieu.

[Accordion] Booklet function with Framemaker

B - on the laptop when opening a file whose pictures can not be found,
and activating "ignore this/all missing files" nothing happens.

Acrobat 8 and FrameMaker 8, 8.0.1, 8.0.2 => no positive result.

Converting the files on the workstation to FM8 then transfer to the laptop and
open
them with FM8 => does not help either (problem originally occurred with FM 8
files).

That's the end of my latin - any clues where to look for that devil?Anzeige:

Ignore missing files on open not possible

2008-05-20 Thread Art Campbell
Klaus,

With all respect, this looks and sounds as if it's a configuration
problem on the laptop, not a FM bug or issue. Something isn't
identical...

Are the Windows user name and group memvership set up exactly the same
on both machines? Exactly, letter / case matches?

The FM setup is the same? Can you copy maker.ini file from one to the
other and nothing breaks? (BTW, there is a 8.0.3 patch out now...)

Virus checker is the same on both systems?

You can avoid getting those duplicates by changing your list membership
settings. Log into your mailing list account using the personalized URL
at the bottom of list messages to you. Scroll down to the gray table of
list options. The last option is:

"Avoid duplicate copies of messages?

"When you are listed explicitly in the To: or Cc: headers of a list
message, you can opt to not receive another copy from the mailing list.
Select Yes to avoid receiving copies from the mailing list; select No to
receive copies."

Set this to Yes and click Submit My Changes.

I think Lisa Bronson took over as list mom in 2005. Before that it
was Bradley Anderson. Neither have posted anything to this list for
awhile. Perhaps there are some changes going on behind the scenes
because the frameusers.com Web site has been down for sometime.

A poll sounds good.

Lisa, Brad, Anyone?

Booklet function with Framemaker

2008-05-20 Thread Dov Isaacs
I would most strongly endorse the Quite Imposing and Quite Imposing Plus
plug-ins from Quite Software. I've been using them for a number of years
as my imposition tool of choice when not having the luxury of going out
for professional printing. The software is highly reliable and efficient
with a tremendous amount of functionality. Page imposition and booklet making
as a primary example of such imposition tasks is really something that you
should not do in a page layout / authoring tool.

Haven't we learnt anything about usability? [was"Re: default"reply-to-all" "]

2008-05-20 Thread Matt Sullivan
Lisa Bronson is now Lisa Gielczyk (like "SpellCheck, as she says)

Or so says the business card she handed me last summer. Which is the only
way I would have been able to get the spelling right.

I don't believe she still has a hand in moderation.

Sent via "reply to all" with little effort, but great anxiety about the
political and usability ramifications.

how to get list of variables and values

2008-05-20 Thread Karene Millar
Does anyone know of a way to get a complete list (text is fine) of all
the variables in a FM file and their values?

I'm using FM 7.1

Thank you!

Conditional Text Just Won't Go Away

2008-05-20 Thread Jona Steenbrink
Disclaimer: I apologize if this message appears on the list twice. The
first time I sent it, I did not use the email address that is
registered with framers.

Hi.

FM 8.0p273
Windows XP (running on parallels on a Mac)

I am fast approaching the end of my tether working with conditional
text.

FM won't let me make some segments of text unconditional. In fact,
when I try to remove the conditional tag, the text turns bright green
with a strikethrough effect. What's more... when I try again, it's now
bright red with a strikethrough effect. And, (hullo, what's this?) now
it's bright red with a strikethrough effect and a change bar.

All three conditions in the document are set to Style: As Is, and
three different colors (green, olive, and magenta).

I cannot make this text unconditional. Selecting (or deselecting)
Special > Conditional Text > Show Conditional Text at the document
level or the book level affects all of the conditionally tagged
paragraphs except for these red, struck through, paragraphs.

What's going on? Is it FM telling me that I'm doing something very
wrong? I've looked at the FM documentation, and it's giving me
nothing. Does anyone have any idea what might be happening here?

Update: I also cannot copy and paste any of the affected text. If I
select it, ctrl+c and then ctrl+v somewhere else, it won't paste.
Although I can Edit > Undo Paste. Go figure. Is it possible that these
segments of text have, through some action or combination of actions,
become hopelessly corrupted? Is that even possible?

Thanks,

Jona Steenbrink
