Re: Running Header in a Continued File?

2008-06-01 Thread John Pitt
Pat,

Another way of skinning this particular cat works without needing to
split chapter files (on Frame from 7.x anyway).

It boils down to adding particular parastyles to the
UnstructMasterPageMaps table on Reference pages and selecting Apply
Master Pages when you Update the book. Whenever the Update sees the
first parastyle, it changes the Master page used to your Landscape; and
returns to the standard Left/Right Masters when it sees the second
parastyle.

We use it on Single-sided books with excellent results by adding two new
paragraph styles (StartLandscape and FinishLandscape). I think it might
be more difficult with Double-sided docs.

In the FM 8 help, the full instructos are in To assign a master page to
body pages on which a paragraph tag appears.

Re: FM updates on Adobe website not complete

2008-06-01 Thread Michael Müller-Hillebrand
Hi Klaus,

I collected all available updates on my website:

http://cap-studio.de/wp/index.php/2008/06/framemaker-804/

Due to unknown processes it takes a while for all stuff to finally
appear on the website. One can easily imagine that there is no direct
access to the adobe.com website content, everything is (most
probably) created on a staging server and then, after some final
approvement process, uploaded to the public server. Those processes
are not executed every day, because the QA load would be too heavy. I
guess... wild guesses...

The only method I'm aware of is to cut and paste characters from the Windows

Press the Alt key and type your Unicode, then release the alt key.

That only works for the 256 extended ASCII characters for me. How are you
entering the Unicode characters with higher values, such as U+0416? Alt-416
and Alt-0416 both produce characters, but neither are the correct Unicode
character. (I used the Arial Unicode MS font.)

Mike,

For U+0416, you normally do alt/0,4,1,6 . I have already heard of such
problems as you describe because of Windows' bad implementation of
Unicode at lower levels. That might be sometimes related to interaction
with a specific font.

Have you tried switching fonts? You might also have a look at a very
convenient utility called PopChar Win, which you can find at http://
www.macility.com/products/popcharwin/ and which I use without a glitch
on Frame 8 / Windows XP (MacBook Pro+VMWare Fusion).

Good luck,

Any way to set an absolute numbering scheme that is independent?

2008-06-01 Thread Syed.Hosain
Hi, all.

I am trying to set up a mechanism to use an absolute numbering scheme for
certain paragraphs that is *independent* of the other numbering in the document.

For example, I may have a Heading 1 that increases 1, 2, 3, etc., Heading 2
that increases 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc. (and gets reset to .1 in each Heading 1),
etc.

But, independent of these, I have some paragraphs (currently inside tables)
that need to have a number that also auto-increments (like Spec 1, Spec 2,
etc.) but *completely* independently from the chapter and section numbering!
The reason I want to use *automatically* is obvious ... if I insert a paragraph
into the document with that format, I want to have all the later ones after
that point automatically get updated with the auto-number.

I looked for a Autonumber Format in Building Block that I could use for this
purpose (in the Paragraph Designer), but no luck. Getting the letters Spec
in there is easy, but there does not seem to be a numbering scheme that I can
use for this ...

So ... is there any way to achieve the desired result?

In fact, if I had just tried it with the word Spec like I showed

appear to act like the x you mentioned.

RE: unresolved x-ref to a heading in a text inset

2008-06-01 Thread Johnson, Kathleen
An even easier method, which lets you keep the heading in the inset, is
to initially insert the cross-reference marker in the inset. After the
inset is updated in the container file, re-create the cross-reference to
the container file, which will use the marker contained inside the
inset. It won't matter how many manuals you have or where you use the
inset, and you can keep headings with their associated text.

Subject: RE: unresolved x-ref to a heading in a text inset

Verner,

Cross-references with text insets are tricky. X-refs to text insets
require that the container file be specified for the inset. Since the
inset is in two different manuals (Manual A and Manual B), when you set
a reference to the inset in Manual A, then Manual A's file name and
location become part of that x-reference, so that's why the x-ref
becomes unresolved for Manual B. Conversely, when you set a reference to
the inset in Manual B, then Manual B's file name and location become
part of that x-reference, so that's why the x-ref becomes unresolved for
Manual A. There are a variety of ways to solve this (framescript,
manually making two x-refs with conditional text, etc.) but the most
consistent and easiest way is NOT to have headings in insets. Keep the
headings in the container file and import the inset less the heading.
This way, you can set up x-refs to headings to two different manuals as
you would always in FM and not have this problem.

Let me know if you need any more help.

Adobe FrameMaker 8.0.4 failed to install

2008-06-01 Thread Hedley Finger

The Adobe Updater recognised that I didn't have the latest update.
Captivate and RoboHelp were updated successfully but not FrameMaker.
Why is this? I have also set preferences so that the updater will check
automatically but it never does. This is a bog standard installation in
the default directory on Windows XP, which itself has had all updates
installed.

Hedley

Running Header in a Continued File?

In the FM 8 help, the full instructos are in "To assign a master page to
body pages on which a paragraph tag appears".

FM updates on Adobe website not complete

2008-06-01 Thread Michael Müller-Hillebrand
Hi Klaus,

I collected all available updates on my website:

Due to unknown processes it takes a while for all stuff to finally
appear on the website. One can easily imagine that there is no direct
access to the adobe.com website content, everything is (most
probably) created on a staging server and then, after some final
approvement process, uploaded to the public server. Those processes
are not executed every day, because the QA load would be too heavy. I
guess... wild guesses...

The only method I'm aware of is to cut and paste characters from the Windows

That only works for the 256 extended ASCII characters for me. How are you
entering the Unicode characters with higher values, such as U+0416? Alt-416
and Alt-0416 both produce characters, but neither are the correct Unicode
character. (I used the Arial Unicode MS font.)

Mike,

For U+0416, you normally do alt/0,4,1,6 . I have already heard of such
problems as you describe because of Windows' bad implementation of
Unicode at lower levels. That might be sometimes related to interaction
with a specific font.

Have you tried switching fonts? You might also have a look at a very
convenient utility called PopChar Win, which you can find at and which I use without a glitch
on Frame 8 / Windows XP (MacBook Pro+VMWare Fusion).

Good luck,

Amnon.

It embarasses me to say, this, really it does, but ? I looked in the Office

To enter a Unicode character, enter ALT+X. For instance, to type ?, the
Euro symbol, type "20ac" then press ALT+X. It works in Office 2007; I don't
know about earlier versions.

Any way to set an absolute numbering scheme that is independent?

2008-06-01 Thread syed.hos...@aeris.net

(and gets reset to .1 in each Heading 1),
etc.

But, independent of these, I have some paragraphs (currently inside tables)
that need to have a number that also auto-increments (like "Spec 1", "Spec 2",
etc.) but *completely* independently from the chapter and section numbering!

Getting the letters "Spec "
in there is easy, but there does not seem to be a numbering scheme that I can
use for this ...

So ... is there any way to achieve the desired result?

Worked perfectly, Pat!

In fact, if I had just tried it with the word "Spec " like I showed

appear to act like the "x" you mentioned.

I did make a new paragraph format for this table cell too, and that also

Yes. We posted this info here May 2, in response to a similar query.
Mif2Go can do that for you, and it works fine with the demo version;
you don't have to buy it:
  http://www.omsys.com/dcl/download.htm

The process is described in the User's Guide, par. 29.2.3, "Exporting
and converting embedded graphics". It works best if the image is alone
in its anchored frame; then you get the original format at full original
resolution back. You do *not* get the original name, because Frame does
not store it; yet another reason never to embed graphics.

Worst case, Mif2Go exports the graphic at screen resolution, in the
format you select (usually GIF or JPEG), using Frame's native graphic
export filters. In that case, callouts, montages, etc., are retained,
but the resolution is generally much worse than the original was.

unresolved x-ref to a heading in a text inset

How do you suggest that I solve this?

Entering unicode characters directly in an FM 8 document

2008-06-01 Thread Geoffrey Marnell
Hi Framers,

I'm tired of pulling my hair out trying to find an answer to this in the FM
8 OLH, so over to you...

I want to enter some unicode (but non-ANSI) characters into an English
language document (such as primes and double primes-u2032; and u2033;
respectively-being symbols use in specifying latitude and longitude). I'm
stuffed if I can work out how to do this directly in FM.

There is a long-winded workaround: type the character in MSWord (2032 + ALT
+ x gives the prime, for example), copy it, and then paste it into FM (Paste
Special --> Unicode Text). But surely there is an easier way than this.
Ideas?

Cheers
