ON-SCREEN GUIDES

2008-08-13 Thread Michael Zaichenko
Hello there,
does anyone know of a utility that would put guides on my screen. To explain:
Frame doesn't have any guides and at times it's needed. Any advanced software -
Photoshop, Indesign, etc. has rules (or guides) which you can just drag around
and place wherever you need and align your objects accordingly. Not so with
Frame. So I thought maybe there is some on-screen guides utility that I can
use. I know, I know - grid lines, snapping, aligning, etc. are all to my
discretion. However i'm doing a specific graphic work and all i need is guides.

Ideas?

Use:

OR

colors invisible.

Hi Michael,

Have you tried showing grid lines (View Grid

suit your needs (View Options). You can then use the Gravity and
Snap commands on the Graphics menu to help align. I must confess,
though, that like others on the list, I position graphics using the
object's properties.

Yes, you are right with InDesign. I'm using it too. My workflow is all around
Frame though and I'm having to cope it somehow. Ever so often I have certain
objects that have to be scaled and placed based on their look, not digital
size and that is where guides come handy. I set off on a small project now to
create a script that would handle these guides in FM. If someone is interested
- I'm open to suggestions.

P.S. this one should reach the list ;-). Thanks for noticing it.

Hi Michael,

I don't think you replied to the whole list with this.

For a visual reference, I think drawing lines on the master page would work
best, but you'd have to delete them before printing.

I just don't see the need for a visual reference. You can align objects and
accurately set their position on a page. It sounds like you might need a true
page layout tool such as InDesign.

TCS version of FM8 crashes repeatedly

2008-08-13 Thread Diane Gaskill
Hi everybody,

I recently installed the TCS (original version) on my new company laptop
(Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad T61P, XPSP2, 2.2GHz, 160GB HDD, 2GB RAM).
FM crashes repeatedly on any FM file that has unavailable fonts (same error
message and memory dump every time, and I have the dump). Uninstalling and
reinstalling FM does not solve the problem, nor does a complete uninstall
and reinstall of the TCS.

I tried to install the available FM updates but they failed. I suspect that
the updates for standard FM8 do not apply to the TCS version. Does anyone
know about that?

Uninstalling the TCS version of FM8 and replacing it with the standard
version of FM8 works fine. But of course, that is only a temporary
workaround and is not the correct solution for the problem.

Has anyone else experienced this? Are there separate updates for the TCS
versions of FM8, AB8 and RH7? The Adobe updater does not seem to find
anything.

BTW, commenting on the message below, whenever I install FM and AB, I always
install FM first and never install the PDF add on. it's a waste of time. I
install Acrobat after FM and that installation provides Distiller and
PDFmaker.

Thanks,
Diane

why am I having missing fonts in FM8, and how to correct?

2008-08-13 Thread Kanti . Mann
Hello:

I know FM8 uses unicode, rather than PS fonts as before, but in an entire
group of 10+ writers, some of us are getting font errors, and some are
not, now that we're all using the ATCS.

Further, many of the errors are for things like Helvetica, which is there
anyway!

Is there a pointer to an explanation of why this is happening, and how to
fix the problem? Sorry if this is already covered, but I couldn't locate
it in the framers archives.

RE: why am I having missing fonts in FM8, and how to correct?

2008-08-13 Thread Dov Isaacs
FrameMaker 8 continues to support use of Type 1 fonts (I assume that is
what you mean by PS fonts) as well as TrueType and OpenType fonts. The
character set of the Type 1 fonts are mapped into Unicode.

You don't say what type of font errors you are getting (missing fonts?
mismapped characters? What?). If you provide some specific information
including the exact font names, source of such fonts, etc. and perhaps
a sample document, we could perhaps better analyze the problem you are
experiencing and offer some assistance.

ON-SCREEN GUIDES

2008-08-13 Thread Peter Gold
Have you tried drawing guide lines manually, positioning them
accurately with object properties, and assigning them a non-printing
or invisible color?

Use:

* View > Color > Definitions > Print As to define a non-printing color.

OR

* View > Color > Views to define a color view that makes specified
colors invisible.

HTH

ON-SCREEN GUIDES

2008-08-13 Thread Susan Modlin
Hi Michael,

Have you tried showing grid lines (View > Grid
lines)? The default is quarter inch, but you can set the spacing to
suit your needs (View > Options). You can then use the Gravity and
Snap commands on the Graphics menu to help align. I must confess,
though, that like others on the list, I position graphics using the
object's properties.

Subject: ON-SCREEN GUIDES

Hello there,
does anyone know of a utility that would put guides on my screen. To explain:
Frame doesn't have any guides and at times it's needed. Any advanced software -
Photoshop, Indesign, etc. has rules (or guides) which you can just drag around
and place wherever you need and align your objects accordingly. Not so with
Frame. So I thought maybe there is some on-screen guides utility that I can
use. I know, I know - grid lines, snapping, aligning, etc. are all to my
discretion. However i'm doing a specific graphic work and all i need is guides.

ON-SCREEN GUIDES

2008-08-13 Thread Michael Zaichenko
Yes, you are right with InDesign. I'm using it too. My workflow is all around
Frame though and I'm having to cope it somehow. Ever so often I have certain
objects that have to be scaled and placed based on their look, not "digital"
size and that is where guides come handy. I set off on a small project now to
create a script that would handle these guides in FM. If someone is interested
- I'm open to suggestions.

Michael
P.S. this one should reach the list ;-).

Thank you Glenn and all who answered,I appreciate that. My question actually
was: Is there an on-screen utility that makes these guides. I don't care so
much whether it is interacting with Frame or not. I need somewhat a visual
guide rather than interactive/snap-on guides.Hope this makes the search a bit
narrower. Michael

install Acrobat after FM and that installation provides Distiller and
PDFmaker.

Thanks,
Diane

Question regarding table footnotes

2008-08-13 Thread Denise Salles
Hi,

I am having trouble w/table footnotes - using Frame 7.2 Windows. I
create them correctly - with the cursor in the cell next to the
content, I choose Special > Footnote. No problem. If I have additional
areas of the table that need to reference the same footnote number, I
use a cross-reference w/a format that duplicate the table footnote
number i want, superscripted.

Now here is the problem:

? When I attempt to link from the footnote in the table (Ctrl-Alt) and
get the little pointing finger, I get nothing, but the entire cell,
and the footnote under the table are selected.

? When I Ctrl-Alt one of the x-ref footnotes, I get the little
pointing finger and am able to jump directly to the footnote below the
table.

Am I a complete moron? I've been using Frame for a long time, and
don't know what I'm doing incorrectly. I realize I could use a named
destination | jump to destination for the first instance, but do I
really HAVE to??

HELP Frame Geniuses please!

Thank you,
Denise Salles

why am I having missing fonts in FM8, and how to correct?

2008-08-13 Thread kanti.m...@schange.com

Sorry if this is already covered, but I couldn't locate
it in the framers archives.

why am I having missing fonts in FM8, and how to correct?

2008-08-13 Thread Dov Isaacs
FrameMaker 8 continues to support use of Type 1 fonts (I assume that is
what you mean by "PS fonts") as well as TrueType and OpenType fonts. The
character set of the Type 1 fonts are mapped into Unicode.

You don't say what type of "font errors" you are getting (missing fonts?
mismapped characters? What?). If you provide some specific information
including the exact font names, source of such fonts, etc. and perhaps
a sample document, we could perhaps better analyze the problem you are
experiencing and offer some assistance.

ON-SCREEN GUIDES

My workaround has been to make lines (.5pt) in Cyan and then delete them
when I have finished aligning to them.

A more dangerous approach would be to apply a special color tag to the
lines that you could then change to white or your background color.

I would add guides to the wishlist for next FM upgrade.

ON-SCREEN GUIDES
