Drop-Down Menu Using FrameScript: Is it possible

2008-09-05 Thread Amita Goyal
Hello Framers,

I am working on an application where I need drop down lists for a table or
text.

Is it possible through using FrameScript.

Does any one know whether FrameScript can provide controls such as check
boxes, combo boxes and drop down menus.

You can also reply off-list at agoyal2006 at gmail.com.

Thanks,

Amita Goyal

Hi Robert,

Rick Quatro's Find/Change Special plug-in works in FrameMaker 8, but I think
Rick still needs to update the information on his site:

Hi Framiacs,

Is there a super find/change that is compatible with FrameMaker 8,
officially or unofficially? I have seen a couple in these lists, but they do
not appear to be compatible with 8.0. Anyone know better?

Regarding your list, Scott, very helpful but it would be really great if you
could organize your plugin list by Framemaker compatibility . . . I run
unstructured Framemaker 8 and it was hard to go through your list, and I was
not confident that typing "8" in the keyword field was going to do the job.

Do you mean in a dialog box? If so, see the
manual EslObjects.pdf that comes with
FrameScript. All typical controls, and tabbed dialog boxes, are available.

Fwd: OT: matching dual LCD monitors

2008-09-05 Thread elizabeth moffatt
Hi Dave,

I asked a friend who I know is pedantic about these things:

There are a bunch of things that could be causing problems.

Using DVI-D (digital) connections for both displays will probably help, at
least you will be using the same image processing circuitry in both displays
and same behaviour from the display driver then.

Go through all of the display menus on both panels and make sure they match
(particularly colour/white point temperature). Having the same settings on
both doesn't guarantee that they'll match (see below), but you should start
there and then, from that point, try tweaking one of them towards the other.
Often the displays don't offer much control via the on-screen displays when
using DVI-D connections, so you may have to use options in the display
drivers instead or in combination.

The backlight in the displays becomes dimmer with age (and takes longer to
reach peak brightness). This is affected by the number of hours the
backlight has been running rather than the actual age of the display. A
dimmer backlight affects both the brightness (obviously) and will also
affect colour to some degree.

If you need accurate colour rendition, the you need to use a colourimeter to
calibrate the monitors. If the displays are quite different, this will not
get them looking the same, because the colourimeter can't deal with
differents in brightness or dynamic range, but at least the colours will be
accurate. If there's already a colourimeter in the company, this might be
the best place to start first... otherwise the cost of a colourimeter starts
at around $250.

Manufacturers make changes to the monitor builds over time, so it's possible
that the same model monitor may be built with a completely different image
processors, firmware, LCD panel, and backlight. If the serial numbers are
very close, this is unlikely, and for higher end displays the parts used in
the build tends to be much more consistent. Having said that, I have two
24" Dell displays (hardly print-press quality, but they are higher end
displays) that were bought about 2 months apart that have different panels
and quite different brightness and colour rendition.

Cheers,
-mjg

OT: matching dual LCD monitors

2008-09-05 Thread Dave Reynolds
Hi

Not exactly Frame related, but I'm after some advice about LCD
monitors. After being the only tech writer in our team with a single
monitor, I finally got given another monitor a couple of weeks ago.
Hurray!! It's been a long wait. So now I have matching Viewsonic VA912
19" monitors. The second one is not new, but reassigned to me from
someone else. Judging from the numbers, it is about the same age as my
first monitor.

Apparently my PC has an on-board video card, so they connected the
second monitor via an adaptor card (budget constraints!). This meant I
had the first monitor on an analog feed, and the second monitor on a
digital feed.

The display on the second monitor is quite different from the first
monitor in terms of colour, brightness and contrast. I have tried to
adjust the second monitor to match the display of the first monitor, but
I've been unsuccessful. I've tried the adjustments on the monitor and
in the driver, but the display on the second monitor is still inferior
to that on the first monitor. After complaining to our IST people, they
fitted a new video card that they happened to have in stock (still
budget constraints), but I notice that the first monitor is still on
analog, and the second is still on digital, and I still can't get the
displays to match.

For many applications this is only a nuisance. However, for editing
photographs it is a major problem. I take quite a few photos for my
manuals and it is important that the edited versions of the photos I
take are consistent for colour, brightness and contrast. This means
that I cannot currently use the second monitor for editing photos, as
the same photo looks so different on each monitor.

Is there a way to get the second monitor to match the first one, or am I
fighting a losing battle trying to get the digital input display to
match the analog input display?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

Character Tools and Paragraph Tools (both from Silicon Prairie Software) have

are okay for FM8 too,

Superscript characters

2008-09-05 Thread Scott White
When we import our export from our filemaker database into Frame we
are noticing that unique superscript characters are not showing up as
we typed them in our database.
Instead of showing up as 4(superscript3) or a 5(superscript negative
4) they are showing up as an S with a "v" over the top.
Is there a way to fix those with an edit and replace? I don't see how
if the same searchable character means several different things.

Could we fix the database to look like this in filemaker -- 3(3) or
6(-6) -- and then do a find and replace that way?
Any help would be appreciated.

> could organize your plugin list by Framemaker compatibility

Actually, what would be even nicer is in the search could include an option
exclude-FrameMaker-versions-earlier-than. Yeah, that's kinda greedy of me.

But my larger problem isn't with Scott's terrific list but rather with the fact
that too many of
the plugins I supported by buying are no longer being updated. (Silicon Prairie
Software is one
terrific exception.)

My employer provides me with a FrameMaker 8 license on my work desktop, but
this week I am using my
own personal laptop with my own personal FrameMaker 7.1 license. Two plugins
that simply do not
work under FM8 will allow me to burn through tedious monkey-work in hours
rather than days.

Sadly, when I need a really complex find-and-replace, I save my files as MIF
and use TextPipe Lite
on 'em (datamystic.com/textpipe/web.html). That too is my own personal license,
but now that I
think of it, I shall point out to my employer just how useful it is in hopes
they buy a few
licenses. And since TextPipe Lite isn't a FrameMaker utility, it doesn't
support finding and
changing paragraph formats or anything like that.

I'm thinking that the table has fairly long copy blocks in the first
row or two, which means that the cells don't have good break points...
so the solution is to break the first rows manually into multiple rows
to create natural break points for the first row. Add several rows and
manually break the text from your current first or first couple rows
into multiple rows. Then apply custom ruling (eliminate internal row
rulings) to make the new cells blend and appear to be a single cell.
Also, check the row break points, but making shorter rows should do
it..

Plugins, Framescripts, etc.

2008-09-05 Thread Scott Prentice
Robert and Doug .. thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely add a
filtering option for FM versions, excellent idea.

Until I can get to that, here's the list of plugins that are listed as
FM8 compatible ..

BookPageCount
BookReport (FrameScript)
ChapterTOC (FrameScript)
DITA Open Toolkit Support
DITA-FMx 1.0
FindChangeSpecial
FrameSLT
GlossBase ( FrameScript)
IniSwitcher
PageBreaks
PageLabeler
Structure Snippets
TableCleaner

Unfortunately this may not really be up to date, since I don't regularly
track these things. This database is set up to allow the tool developers
to log in and update their data and add new tools. I'm relying on those
tool developers to update the system when they release a new version. Or
if you (anyone) knows of any tools that have been updated or have
suggestions for other tools that should be added, please let me know.

Cheers,

...scott

Plugins, Framescripts, etc.

2008-09-05 Thread Robert Stoker
Just to let you know, all of our plug-ins (including Super Find) are
compatible with Frame 8. When you find a plug-in on the list, I
suggest you go to the developer's website to find out about the most
current version. The list is great, but I imagine quite difficult to
keep current.

By the way, thanks to Scott Prentice for creating this fabulous

How to get tables to span pages

2008-09-05 Thread Art Campbell
I'm thinking that the table has fairly long copy blocks in the first
row or two, which means that the cells don't have good break points...
so the solution is to break the first rows manually into multiple rows
to create natural break points for the first row. Add several rows and
manually break the text from your current first or first couple rows
into multiple rows. Then apply custom ruling (eliminate internal row
rulings) to make the new cells blend and appear to be a single cell.
Also, check the row break points, but making shorter rows should do
it..

OT: matching dual LCD monitors

2008-09-05 Thread Art Campbell
Assuming that:you have some kind of calibration sensor and software in
place already, the problem is your video card. Most cards more than a
year or so old only have one chip set and can only read and apply one
profile, even if there are two output ports. And if the graphics are
on the motherboard, there isn't a good way to do this.
You'll need either a set of two matching cond graphics cards or a new
graphics card. that has two chip sets and the capability to discretely
drive two monitors in order to profile both monitors because each
monitor is unique.
Otherwise, I'd calibrate whichever monitor you're going to use as the
primary and use the second for tools and tasks that aren't
color-criven.

Actually, what would be even nicer is in the search could include an option
exclude-FrameMaker-versions-earlier-than. Yeah, that's kinda greedy of me.

But my larger problem isn't with Scott's terrific list but rather with the fact
that too many of
the plugins I supported by buying are no longer being updated. (Silicon Prairie
Software is one
terrific exception.)

My employer provides me with a FrameMaker 8 license on my work desktop, but
this week I am using my
own personal laptop with my own personal FrameMaker 7.1 license. Two plugins
that simply do not
work under FM8 will allow me to burn through tedious monkey-work in hours
rather than days.

Sadly, when I need a really complex find-and-replace, I save my files as MIF
and use TextPipe Lite
on 'em (datamystic.com/textpipe/web.html). That too is my own personal license,
but now that I
think of it, I shall point out to my employer just how useful it is in hopes
they buy a few
licenses. And since TextPipe Lite isn't a FrameMaker utility, it doesn't
support finding and
changing paragraph formats or anything like that.

Best Indexing Tool for FrameMaker?

2008-09-05 Thread Fred Wersan
I have Indexing Tools Pro. I use the Merge Index feature, which is
pretty nifty. ITP also helps make creation of Master Indexes easier.
However, its main feature - embedding index marker text in the main
flow, so you can see index text in a reasonable font size and do search
and replace on index text (the main failings of the FrameMaker indexing,
IMO) didn't work well for me. I don't know if it is because I use
structured frame or what, but it just wasn't working right. But the
basic idea was a good one. So I changed my EDD to add an inline
indexEntry element and wrote some FrameScript scripts to support it. Now
I have inline indexing, but in a way more to my liking.

If anyone who is using structured Frame and Framescript is interested,
I'd be happy to send the scripts to you with a brief explanation of how
they work. Then you're on your own.

Graphic causing Frame to crash

2008-09-05 Thread Lin Sims
Ah! Yes, I did indeed use Copy + Paste. I'll try the Import option in
the morning. As I recall, the only thing I did to my
ClipboardFormatPriorities was move Text to the front. And before
things started crashing, it listed Facets as DIB. (I don't know what
DIB is.)

UPDATE: This is morning. I am, as Art suggested, using Import by
Reference and, as Richard suggested, NOT using copy&paste. so far,
things seem to be working. Keep the fingers crossed.

Thanks for the help.

How to get tables to span pages

2008-09-05 Thread Kristy Nolan
Hi, Carl!

First, check your Table Designer (CTRL + T). On the Basic tab, check
that the Start is set for anywhere.
Then, click in the row you want to be the top of your next page (if
there is a specific row you want to break the table at) and go to
Table/Row Format. In the Start Row drop-down, choose Top of Page.
That should fix it. If you have a header row, and it is marked as such,
it will repeat at the top of the page.

Hope that helps!

Hi all,

I'm using Frame 7.2. I have a table that is the size of one page, but
the text above it only takes a quarter of a page. The table positions
itself at the top of the next page. I'm looking for a way to make it
flow from one page to the next so that it stays close to the text
directly above it. Hope you can help.

Best,

Rick Quatro's Find/Change Special plug-in works in FrameMaker 8, but I think
Rick still needs to update the information on his site:

Hi Framiacs,

Is there a super find/change that is compatible with FrameMaker 8,

Regarding your list, Scott, very helpful but it would be really great if you

not confident that typing "8" in the keyword field was going to do the job.

there is a specific row you want to break the table at) and go to
Table/Row Format. In the Start Row drop-down, choose Top of Page.
That should fix it. If you have a header row, and it is marked as such,
it will repeat at the top of the page.

Hope that helps!

Subject: How to get tables to span pages

Hi all,

I'm using Frame 7.2. I have a table that is the size of one page, but
the text above it only takes a quarter of a page. The table positions
itself at the top of the next page. I'm looking for a way to make it
flow from one page to the next so that it stays close to the text
directly above it. Hope you can help.

Best,

Drop-Down Menu Using FrameScript: Is it possible

2008-09-05 Thread Amita Goyal
Hello Framers,

I am working on an application where I need drop down lists for a table or
text.

Is it possible through using FrameScript.

Does any one know whether FrameScript can provide controls such as check
boxes, combo boxes and drop down menus.

You can also reply off-list at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks,

Amita Goyal

Re: Fwd: OT: matching dual LCD monitors

Cheers,
-mjg

Re: FM7 and OLE

2008-09-05 Thread Tarlochan S. Nahal
Thanks for the Frame.ini file tip. It works fine as far as cut and paste goes
into Frame from other text sources such as Word. It is certainly better than
"Special Paste" which we tend to forget at times and end up introducing a
'persona non grata' font.

Importing or pasting a Visio 7 drawing into Frame 7.2 is still a problem for
which I found no viable solution. I certainly have not tried removing SP3
simply because I do not know how it will affect my system.

Frame is simply refusing to save any changes even if you simply double-clicked
on a Visio drawing, got into the editing mode, but did not make any changes at
all. For some reason Frame thinks you have made some changes to the Visio
drawing which is not true.

This is a default behavior in FrameMaker, and one that many users detest.

Fortunately, the programmers made it a behavior that can be customized.

Open the Maker.ini file in your FrameMaker directory.
Search for the string ClipboardFormatsPriorities

The list of formats behind this property dictate the preference of
pasting a clipboard item.

Change the property to read as follows:
ClipboardFormatsPriorities=TEXT, FILE, OLE 2, EMF, META, DIB, BMP, MIF, RTF

This will make your past from the clipboard use plain text first,
then default to the other formats in the order listed.

This will enable you to paste plain ASCII text directly from a copy
paste operation.

Re: Best Indexing Tool for FrameMaker?

Re: Graphic causing Frame to crash
