Hello Verner,

Tag Editor has an option to move markers to the start of a segment, you
don't need to do that manually.

For your other questions: the 'normal' procedure for translating FrameMaker
books is indeed to use the source folder structure as base, first translate
the FrameMaker files and then copy the folder structure for each language
and put the translated FrameMaker files in that structure. When using Trados
(Tag Editor) or similar systems, you shouldn't worry about naming,
references etc - because only the content (text) will be localized. This
also counts for Japanese, Chinesed and Korean (although you might need a
system that supports CKJ languages to be able to correctly format and
process the target FM files; same counts for CE and Eastern European
languages). Even the content of variables can be translated. You may run
into font-issues, normally the Trados target output has the correct font
encoding but you will stil need a compatble font. We used a (perl) script to
add the correct fontnames to the MIF. When using OpenType fonts there should
be no issue. Starting from version 7.2 FrameMaker even supports all CE
characters.
Be sure to work with an exeprienced TagEditor and Trados vendor, because the
settings used for converting the MIF to Trados STF (or tag editoe STX) and
back are critical. Cross reference content, for example, should be excluded
from translation. Also, the right target language should be set on creating
translated MIF. Trados can't translate text on Reference pages, if you use
text on reference pages put it in a separate (text)file and manually replace
for each language.

If you don't need to localize illustrations, you should set up the folder
structure in such way that you don't need to copy the illustrations folder
for each language. For illustrations to be localized, create a subfolder in
the language folder structure that goes with the FRameMaker folder.

On the content: try to avoid all kinds of local formatting. Any hard break
(line break) will break up a segment for trados as well. Variables,
character formats, index markers, cross refs etc won't break a segment (will
be treated as internal tags), nor will frame anchors or table anchors.

Be aware that most language take up to 140% of the space of source English
(or Danish) text. So better leave some space for flow out, especially in
tables.

File Comparison Tool

Is there a reliable file comparison tool out there that I can use to 
compare versions of a manual, either Frame books or PDFs. I need 
something that will not get confused when there are large deletions or 
reorganization. Is Acrobat's comparison tool reliable enough for this?

Hi Shmuel:

Beyond Compare 3 converts a PDF to text and compares the text. I've heard 
that it does a better job than Acrobat's comparison tool, which has a 
tendency to hang and shows you irrelevant things like different page 
numbers. I've used Acrobat's comparison tool and it can get confused if 
things get pushed onto different pages. I've also used Beyond Compare 2 
and it does a very good job of dealing with deletions. Reorganization is a 
harder one to catch.

I've also used FrameMaker's native comparison tool, but only for files, 
but it's pretty good. I just discovered you can compare books, but I 
didn't try it. My biggest beef with it is that if I compare two structured 
documents, the resulting comparison file is unstructured.

Hi,

Not so. S-Tagger can manage the markers with a simple configuration, 
but if you leave them alone, you get something like this:

this is:imk 1 a word :imk 2with a ma:imk 3rker

It's better to manage the markers and not subject your translators to 
half words, but the letters are still there. It's also better for you 
to manage them, because split words count as two in Trados. You'll 
pay more if there are a lot of them. The string above is eight words 
plus the markers.

I just learned that markers need to be placed in front of or after a
word in Framemaker when preparing for Trados and tageditor. Otherwise
tag-editor will not recognise the word.

Are there any other special rules that I need to be aware of?

The following will work if you have if you are working in, or have
access to, a unix or linux environment (eg Cygwin) then its relatively
easy use a sed script to make the changes on saved .MIF version(s) of
the affected file(s).

Each line of your sed script would be something like this:

/ImportObFileDI/ s/08-204/analyzer_main/

The first part /ImportObFileDI/ limits changes to the lines in the MIF
file where the path to the file is given, so there should be no danger
of making changes to other parts of the file.

The second part of the line gives the old and new file names. If you
haven't already renamed the files then you could start off with a unix
script that renames the files, for example:

mv 08-204 analyzer_main

and then edit this to create your sed script.

You can then run the sed script with the command:

sed - f script-file-name input.mif  output.mif

I don't know of any equivalent batch processing utilities available
under Windows but would be interested if anyone knows of them.

RE: FM8 crashes

Hi Charlie,

We had a similar problem directly related to Microsoft Office software.
The longer we worked with FM8 in a single session, the higher the
likelihood that opening an e-mail through Outlook, opening/creating a
Word document, or opening/creating an Excel document would cause FM8 to
crash.  According to Adobe technical support, FM8 creates a series of
temporary files in your Temp folder and then deletes them once you close
your session.  If you don't have a lot of RAM or have a slow processor,
doing anything with Microsoft Office like what I've described will cause
it to crash because there isn't enough space in the Temp folder.

You can either make sure your Temp folder is completely empty before
every time you start FrameMaker (won't stop the crashes completely),
only use FM8 when all Microsoft Office applications are closed, or
upgrade your PC.

I recently upgraded to a dual core 3.0 GHz processor with 2.0 GB of RAM
and haven't experienced a crash since.  My co-workers however are still
suffering and see maybe 14 crashes a day.

get very sluggish performance in Outlook. Users around me report no slow

Has anyone else had problems running FM8 concurrently with MS Office or
other programs? Would a faster processor make a significant difference?

Freelance Assignment

We're looking for a freelancer for a single assignment who has a strong
working knowledge of Adobe FrameMaker. We have a trade publication laid
out in FrameMaker about seven years ago. We've revised it (in Word) and
need the edits managed into a revised edition in FrameMaker. This
requires a strong working knowledge of the software and its features.
The assignment will include managing and updating extensive
cross-referencing, indexing, and other aspects. We are also looking at a
subsequent conversion of the FrameMaker files to a dynamic PDF, for
release as an e-book (or extensively hyperlinked PDF). 

We expect the layout work will need to be done in early-mid October. 

Please reply only if you have worked in FrameMaker extensively, are
reliable and professional, and are attentive to detail. This is a
short-term assignment. We would consider either a fixed price or an
hourly rate. And, of course, please reply to me off-list.

FM, Renaming links to graphics

that works on text files to change the path? Notepad++ has a global 
search and replace for text files.

not sure, but if ever you've got a split word, a second same sentence won't 
appear as a repetition of the first, but as a No Match (new segment), and 
you'll pay more as well:

For example : 

1. this is:imk 1 a word :imk 2with a ma:imk 3rker is :

8 No Match. Cost = 8 x rate per word

2. this is:imk 1 a word :imk 2with a ma:imk 3rker. this is:imk 1 a 
word :imk 2with a ma:imk 3rker. is : 

8 No Match + 8 repetitions. Cost : 8 x rate per word + (8 x rate per word) x 
discount rate for repetitions (10% for instance)

3. this is:imk 1 a word :imk 2with a ma:imk

 It's better to manage the markers and not subject your translators to 
 half words, but the letters are still there. It's also better for you 
 to manage them, because split words count as two in Trados. You'll 
 pay more if there are a lot of them. The string above is eight words

 I just learned that markers need to be placed in front of or after a
 word in Framemaker when preparing for Trados and tageditor. Otherwise
 tag-editor will not recognise the word.
 
 Are there any other special rules that I need to be aware of?

Re: ePublisher Pro vs. other generated online help

RANTFirst let me say that I think that ePublisher licenses are  
highway robbery. For example, they do not allow you to upgrade from an  
older version; instead, you pay the full price.  I had webworks  
publisher pro, or whatever the version was before epublisher. No  
upgrade path for that because I did not upgrade when epublisher came  
out. I'd like to know what software planet webworks operates on,  
because I have NEVER bought ANY software that did not have an upgrade  
path.

Also, webworks support will cost you plenty. NOTHING is free. Example,  
even though we bought two new licences and had difficulties installing  
it on one of our machines, Webwork offers NO support for this. This  
really pissed me off, especially since it turns out that my install  
problems were due to their poor documentation (there was no mention  
that you could only have one version of frame installed. I wasted a  
complete day getting the install to work).

Their documentation is almost worthless. It's essentially a functional  
spec; eg, this function does this, this function does that, etc. There  
is very little How To help in the so-called help file. And to make  
it even worse, they don't even have a forum where you can post  
questions; you have to go to the yahoo webworks group which is  
supported by some very kindly webworks users./RANT

However, now that you know my opinion of Webworks as a company, I will  
admit that the new epubisher a pretty nice tool. I had a hard time  
getting used to the new interface, but once I did, it converted my fm  
books pretty flawlessly. With Webworks Publisher, I would have to do  
extensive template modificaitons to get the html output to look the  
way I wanted it to look. But with epub, the output was almost perfect  
without any mods. And it was VERY EASY to set up a multi-volume help  
project (one with many different books). Because I was helping to set  
up this project for users who beginner frame  and webworks users, ease  
of use was VERY important.

epub is also much faster than wwpub pro at converting fm books. A real  
plus when you are developing a new project and need to generate output  
many times a day.

One of the best things about epub, compared to robo help is that it  
uses your frame docs as the source. Last I checked, robo help still  
only uses the frame docs to import the project. Once imported, you  
have two content sources: robo help and frame.

I haven't use flare so can't comment on it.

I tried mif2go; it can almost do what epub can do, but requires a LOT  
more mucking around in the code. If price is your bottom line, it  
might be worth looking at. But I'd be willing to bet that if you keep  
track of your hours learning mif2go versus epub, the cost difference  
would be negligible.

So that's the sad story. Because webworks is the only game in town,  
they can get away with their Draconian licensing practices.

Hi Pat,

For the most part, I agree with your rant. I got off the Webworks train 
years ago because I couldn't afford to keep up with each new version and 
upgrade. As a consultant, there is only so much software I can buy without 
regular paying jobs to support it. Omsys, makers of MIF2Go, are very 
generous with consultants, probably because we are more inclined to 
recommend their product if they keep us in the loop. And their support is 
unparalleled in the software world.

I think you contradicted yourself a bit when you said, But I'd be willing 
to bet that if you keep track of your hours learning mif2go versus epub, the 
cost difference would be negligible. After all, you wasted an entire day 
trying to get it installed, none of their support is free, documentation is 
lousy, and there is no discounted upgrade path. And the cost of entry is 
much higher to start with. Even with the intial setup, MIF2Go is a much 
better value, in my opinion.

RE: FM8 HTML output

 Charlie,
I'm trying to do the same thing.  I've used RH for years, but I'm new to FM.
I've finally gotten *most* of the unstructured FM functionality down and I'm
moving my doc set into TCS.  I'd be more than willing to share notes.

I began with 1 shorter chapters (less than 100 pgs.) and was able to import
them by copy to FM8 and tweak the formatting.  I was also able to
successfully add those by reference to RH.(At least I got topic files in RH.
I haven't fiddled with the TOC and index.)

Last week I attempted a much larger chapter and RH doesn't recognize it as a
valid FM file.  I found a thread in the user forum that said there's a file
size limit.  If I remember correctly, their experience was that 25MB would
work.  I've had 15MB files go unrecognized.

I went back into FM and learned a lot about document properties and book
settings, and am in the process of trying to work around that size limit.

I was trying to include numbered chapters, headings, figures, and pages. I
can do it successfully in 1 continuous *.fm file, but I have trouble if I
have to break it into smaller files. I can get the page numbers to run
consecutively, but heading, figure and table numbers restart with each new
fm file!

I think I may be able to further decrease my file size by entering the
images by reference too, but that will take way more time than I have before
my release deadline in early Dec..  (Did I mention I'm a lone writer and
have to start writing the new content now?!  This is a major leap of faith!)

Does anyone out there have any ideas?

We are going to translate our FM books into several languages. We use
unstructured Framemaker.

Right now our directory structure looks as follows:

Language folder
 - Text insets (corporate) (disclaimer, warranty, eula, terms of use)
 - Graphics (corporate) (logo, IVD, CE)
 - Text insets (product-specific)
- Product manual folder
  - Framemaker files
  - PDF files
  - Graphics (language specific)
  - Graphics (product generic)

Do you have a suggestion of how to handle the translation process? I know
that the translators are to use a tag editor and that the files are to go
into Trados.

I suggest that the Framemaker files are converted to .mif and that the same
folder structure is created in each language. I also suggest that we keep
the same file names for graphics in all languages.

Hello Verner,

Tag Editor has an option to move markers to the start of a segment, you
don't need to do that manually.

For your other questions: the 'normal' procedure for translating FrameMaker
books is indeed to use the source folder structure as base, first translate
the FrameMaker files and then copy the folder structure for each language
and put the translated FrameMaker files in that structure. When using Trados
(Tag Editor) or similar systems, you shouldn't worry about naming,
references etc - because only the content (text) will be localized. This
also counts for Japanese, Chinesed and Korean (although you might need a
system that supports CKJ languages to be able to correctly format and
process the target FM files; same counts for CE and Eastern European
languages). Even the content of variables can be translated. You may run
into font-issues, normally the Trados target output has the correct font
encoding but you will stil need a compatble font. We used a (perl) script to
add the correct fontnames to the MIF. When using OpenType fonts there should
be no issue. Starting from version 7.2 FrameMaker even supports all CE
characters.
Be sure to work with an exeprienced TagEditor and Trados vendor, because the
settings used for converting the MIF to Trados STF (or tag editoe STX) and
back are critical. Cross reference content, for example, should be excluded
from translation. Also, the right target language should be set on creating
translated MIF. Trados can't translate text on Reference pages, if you use
text on reference pages put it in a separate (text)file and manually replace
for each language.

If you don't need to localize illustrations, you should set up the folder
structure in such way that you don't need to copy the illustrations folder
for each language. For illustrations to be localized, create a subfolder in
the language folder structure that goes with the FRameMaker folder.

On the content: try to avoid all kinds of local formatting. Any hard break
(line break) will break up a segment for trados as well. Variables,
character formats, index markers, cross refs etc won't break a segment (will
be treated as internal tags), nor will frame anchors or table anchors.

Be aware that most language take up to 140% of the space of source English
(or Danish) text. So better leave some space for flow out, especially in
tables.

Is there a reliable file comparison tool out there that I can use to 
compare versions of a manual, either Frame books or PDFs. I need 
something that will not get confused when there are large deletions or 
reorganization. Is Acrobat's comparison tool reliable enough for this?

Hi Shmuel:

Beyond Compare 3 converts a PDF to text and compares the text. I've heard 
that it does a better job than Acrobat's comparison tool, which has a 
tendency to hang and shows you irrelevant things like different page 
numbers. I've used Acrobat's comparison tool and it can get confused if 
things get pushed onto different pages. I've also used Beyond Compare 2 
and it does a very good job of dealing with deletions. Reorganization is a 
harder one to catch.

I've also used FrameMaker's native comparison tool, but only for files, 
but it's pretty good. I just discovered you can compare books, but I 
didn't try it. My biggest beef with it is that if I compare two structured 
documents, the resulting comparison file is unstructured.

Hi,

not sure, but if ever you've got a split word, a second "same" sentence won't 
appear as a repetition of the first, but as a No Match (new segment), and 
you'll pay more as well:

For example : 

1. "this is<:imk 1> a word <:imk 2>with a ma<:imk 3>rker" is :

8 No Match. Cost = 8 x rate per word

2. "this is<:imk 1> a word <:imk 2>with a ma<:imk 3>rker. this is<:imk 1> a 
word <:imk 2>with a ma<:imk 3>rker." is : 

8 No Match + 8 repetitions. Cost : 8 x rate per word + (8 x rate per word) x 
discount rate for repetitions (10% for instance)

3. "this is<:imk 1> a word <:imk 2>with a ma<:imk
3>rker. this is<:imk 1> a word <:imk 2>with a marker." is

16 No Match. Cost : 16 x rate per word

ePublisher Pro vs. other generated online help

First let me say that I think that ePublisher licenses are  
highway robbery. For example, they do not allow you to upgrade from an  
older version; instead, you pay the full price.  I had webworks  
publisher pro, or whatever the version was before epublisher. No  
upgrade path for that because I did not upgrade when epublisher came  
out. I'd like to know what software planet webworks operates on,  
because I have NEVER bought ANY software that did not have an upgrade  
path.

Also, webworks support will cost you plenty. NOTHING is free. Example,  
even though we bought two new licences and had difficulties installing  
it on one of our machines, Webwork offers NO support for this. This  
really pissed me off, especially since it turns out that my install  
problems were due to their poor documentation (there was no mention  
that you could only have one version of frame installed. I wasted a  
complete day getting the install to work).

Their documentation is almost worthless. It's essentially a functional  
spec; eg, this function does this, this function does that, etc. There  
is very little "How To" help in the so-called "help" file. And to make  
it even worse, they don't even have a forum where you can post  
questions; you have to go to the yahoo webworks group which is  
supported by some very kindly webworks users.

However, now that you know my opinion of Webworks as a company, I will  
admit that the new epubisher a pretty nice tool. I had a hard time  
getting used to the new interface, but once I did, it converted my fm  
books pretty flawlessly. With Webworks Publisher, I would have to do  
extensive template modificaitons to get the html output to look the  
way I wanted it to look. But with epub, the output was almost perfect  
without any mods. And it was VERY EASY to set up a multi-volume help  
project (one with many different books). Because I was helping to set  
up this project for users who beginner frame  and webworks users, ease  
of use was VERY important.

epub is also much faster than wwpub pro at converting fm books. A real  
plus when you are developing a new project and need to generate output  
many times a day.

One of the best things about epub, compared to robo help is that it  
uses your frame docs as the source. Last I checked, robo help still  
only uses the frame docs to import the project. Once imported, you  
have two content sources: robo help and frame.

I haven't use flare so can't comment on it.

I tried mif2go; it can almost do what epub can do, but requires a LOT  
more mucking around in the code. If price is your bottom line, it  
might be worth looking at. But I'd be willing to bet that if you keep  
track of your hours learning mif2go versus epub, the cost difference  
would be negligible.

So that's the sad story. Because webworks is the only game in town,  
they can get away with their Draconian licensing practices.

Hi Pat,

For the most part, I agree with your rant. I got off the Webworks train 
years ago because I couldn't afford to keep up with each new version and 
upgrade. As a consultant, there is only so much software I can buy without 
regular paying jobs to support it. Omsys, makers of MIF2Go, are very 
generous with consultants, probably because we are more inclined to 
recommend their product if they keep us in the loop. And their support is 
unparalleled in the software world.

I think you contradicted yourself a bit when you said, "But I'd be willing 
to bet that if you keep track of your hours learning mif2go versus epub, the 
cost difference would be negligible." After all, you wasted an entire day 
trying to get it installed, none of their support is free, documentation is 
lousy, and there is no discounted upgrade path. And the cost of entry is 
much higher to start with. Even with the intial setup, MIF2Go is a much 
better value, in my opinion.

FM8 HTML output

I'm trying to do the same thing.  I've used RH for years, but I'm new to FM.
I've finally gotten *most* of the unstructured FM functionality down and I'm
moving my doc set into TCS.  I'd be more than willing to share notes.

I began with 1 shorter chapters (less than 100 pgs.) and was able to import
them by copy to FM8 and tweak the formatting.  I was also able to
successfully add those by reference to RH.(At least I got topic files in RH.
I haven't fiddled with the TOC and index.)

Last week I attempted a much larger chapter and RH doesn't recognize it as a
valid FM file.  I found a thread in the user forum that said there's a file
size limit.  If I remember correctly, their experience was that 25MB would
work.  I've had 15MB files go "unrecognized".

I went back into FM and learned a lot about document properties and book
settings, and am in the process of trying to work around that size limit.

I was trying to include numbered chapters, headings, figures, and pages. I
can do it successfully in 1 continuous *.fm file, but I have trouble if I
have to break it into smaller files. I can get the page numbers to run
consecutively, but heading, figure and table numbers restart with each new
fm file!

I think I may be able to further decrease my file size by entering the
images by reference too, but that will take way more time than I have before
my release deadline in early Dec..  (Did I mention I'm a lone writer and
have to start writing the new content now?!  This is a major leap of faith!)

Does anyone out there have any ideas?

We are going to translate our FM books into several languages. We use
unstructured Framemaker.

Right now our directory structure looks as follows:

Language folder
 - Text insets (corporate) (disclaimer, warranty, eula, terms of use)
 - Graphics (corporate) (logo, IVD, CE)
 - Text insets (product-specific)
- Product manual folder
  - Framemaker files
  - PDF files
  - Graphics (language specific)
  - Graphics (product generic)

Do you have a suggestion of how to handle the translation process? I know
that the translators are to use a tag editor and that the files are to go
into Trados.

I suggest that the Framemaker files are converted to .mif and that the same
folder structure is created in each language. I also suggest that we keep
