ANN: Job seeking

2008-12-02 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
Hi fellow framers,

As so many other people in Iceland, and around the world for that
matter, my company is struggling and has made many layoffs recently.
Friday last I was one of the unlucky (or maybe lucky?) to be laid off,
but in my case, I have 6 months notice rights (which is good if the
company survives that long, which is not all that certain). So I will
be up for any odd jobs that can be worked on overseas. I have a couple
of times done overseas jobs from home, so that should not be a
problem.

I will, of course, be applying for a job locally, but there are almost
no companies in Iceland that are using FrameMaker, so my FM knowledge
might not be such an advance here.

I hope you will forgive me if you find me misusing the list, sending
this message, but I think it is at least useful for us all to see how
the job market is from time to time.
(Please don't send any condolences -- this is not the end of the world -- yet!)

Best regards,
Bodvar Bjorgvinsson

Default anchored frame settings

2008-12-02 Thread Nancy Allison

Hi, all.

Whenever I import a graphic, Frame creates a centered, floating anchored
frame.

Naturally, this is not what I need; I need a right-justified,
non-floating anchored frame.

Looking for a solution, my web search turns up ImpGraph Plugins:

http://home.comcast.net/~bruce.foster/ImpGraph.htm

This plugin seems to do the trick. Does anyone have experience with it?
Or, do you recommend another plugin?

Thanks!

Ah, you misunderstand. The reason I ask for recommendations is that
I'm CHEAP, and the license costs $25.00, which would come out of my
impoverished, freelancer's shallow pockets.

Don't want to spend the dough if there is any question about the tool,
or if there is some other tool out there that provides both that
solution and, I dunno, makes my breakfast and sings the national anthem
as well, for the same $25.00.

Consider that Bruce Foster, who created this plug-in, and others that

Great Leap

2008-12-02 Thread Dave Reynolds
Hi Murray

We also upgraded from FM6 to FM8 (on Win XP and 2000). I don't remember
encountering any problems. I tested FM8 for our Tech Pubs group, and I
made the following notes about what I noticed was different:

* The Page Up and Page Down keys move the file up or down by one
screen, not by one page. If you don't like this you can use the
  customui.cfg file to change it.
* The Print > PDF Setup dialog has more options.
* "Document Info" (for a PDF file) is no longer set from the Print
   > PDF Setup dialog. To enter Document Info in FM8:
o from an open file select File > File Info
o from a book select the file(s) and select File > File info,
or right click on the selected file(s) and select File Info.
* When selecting a font from the drop-down list in Paragraph
Designer > Default Font > Family, you get a pop-up showing the
  font name in that font.
* The file names in the book window are in a smaller font, or else
they just look smaller because they're not bold anymore.
* The page background in an open file now picks up the "Window"
background colour from your Windows colour scheme.
* The tool bar icons are slightly different.
* If you get sick of the "Undo history will be lost" warning popping
up every time you close and save a file, you can turn it off in
  File > Preferences > General.

I don't think you will have any problems, but you should probably do
some testing first.

Cheers

Dave

2008-12-02 Thread r...@weststreetconsulting.com
Hi,

InsetPlus 2.1 for structured FrameMaker is now released, including some
important usability enhancements that have made it a much better tool.
If you are a current user of the software, I'd encourage you to take a
look at it. InsetPlus is free. For more information, visit:

Great Leap

2008-12-02 Thread Jeff Schweiner
Murray,

We upgraded in April 08 and use unstructured FM only. Had a few initial
problems with FM8 crashing (once a day). New patches seems to have
taken care of that, I don't even remember my last crash. Just make sure
you get all the patches.

The FM8 User Guide tells you to round trip to mif if opening files older
than FM7. I did this as a precautionary.

Couple of additional changes/improvements:

* Vista and Office 2007 compatible (FM6 was Office 2000 I believe) Much
better Word filter.
* Ability to lock master page usage to paragraph tags (great for locking
wide tables to landscape pages)
* Option to display a Tab bar (similar to a Tab bar in a web browser)
* Can embed 3D flash
* While the Undo History is an improvement over the single Undo in FM6,
I was a little disappointed that actions such as saving a file clear the
Undo history. As Dave mentioned, you get a warning that can be turned
off.
* My mouse scroll wheel didn't work in FM6, but works in FM8.

Bottom line, we're very happy with the upgrade.

Cheers

Dave
