Cross-references within a web browser...PDF to PDF

2009-01-30 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade, Sr.
Good morning all.

I have had limited success with this and previously posted up inquiries but
received no replies. Still looking for some guidance or assistance.

I'm using Standard Framemaker, version 7.2 and Acrobat 8.1.3 Professional

I use Microsoft Front Page for editing the HTML side of things with a frame
going down the left and side of the screen which launches a PDF of a manual,
broken down by chapter. I have discovered that, yup, the HTML side will
allow a user navigate to the PDF, but when using cross-references in PDFs
from within a document to within another document, the navigation doesn't
work.

Examples:
1. If a user is in Chapter 1...and there is a direct link to Chapter 5
(chapter to chapter), the navigation works and it works well.
2. If a user is at Paragraph 1.14.3 and attempts to go to Chapter 5,
the navigation works and it works well.
3. Now, if a user is at Paragraph 1.14.3 and attempts to go to
Paragraph 5.3.7, the cross-reference between chapters will take the user to
Chapter 5.at its beginning and not the intended target of Paragraph 5.3.7.

Am I making any sense?

So I'm still in a quandary over this. The above problem manifests itself in
ANY web browser and I've attempted to use 4 of them to see if one version
works better or as well as another.no luck.

This is just prototyping but it has been sitting on the back burner for a
while..still looking for some guidance or assistance.

All the best

Eduardo

Template conversion, framemaker native formats

2009-01-30 Thread Andersen, Verner Engell VEA
I am converting an old template to a new one. Everything is to be
converted including master pages and reference pages.

Procedure:
1. I copy all contents into a blank document
2. Import all formats from template to document
3, Convert format using paragraph tool, character tool and table tool
from Silicon Prairie.
4. Remove overrides
5. Save untitled document with old file name.

Framemaker paragraphs like Bulleted, Numbered and Body suddenly were in
my document.
I guess I should have deleted them from my untitled document before
importing the formats.

Do you have an easer way of converting a fm template or is this the
standard procedure?

It's from Electropubs.

And there are a couple other similar plugins and scripts too...

Re: [f2a] Cross-references within a web browser...PDF to PDF

2009-01-30 Thread Shlomo Perets

...

When a cross-file link opens the target PDF but on the default opening page
instead of the destination specified, this typically indicates that the
named destination is not present in the target PDF.

I suggest starting by verifying that all links are fully-functional when
the PDFs are opened locally in Acrobat/Reader.

[ In FrameMaker-authored PDFs, a common reason for random bad links is
having Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs turned off in
FrameMaker's PDF setup, Links tab. ]

Do you have an easer way of converting a fm template or is this the
 standard procedure?

When you create a blank document (File New Use Blank Paper) it's
not really an empty, formatless document -- it has a pgf catalog, char
catalog, master pages, ref pages, xref formats, etc.

IIRC, these default formats/settings come from the shellnew.fm file in
your FM installation's fminit directory, and you can modify that file so
future blank documents have the characteristics you want.

But I'm not sure what the point of step 1 in your procedure is. If you
have a template file, as you suggest in step 2, save a copy of it under
a new name and paste the contents into that instead of into a blank
document.

Or just perform steps 2-4 and then use the Silicon Prarie tools to
quickly delete the old, now-unused formats.

Or, as Art suggested, get a tool like CleanImport or Rick Quatro's
FrameScript conversion solution.

Step 1 doesn't really gain you anything. Unlike Word, FM doesn't have
dedicated, special-purpose template files that you hook into your
regular docs. An FM template is just a plain FM file. So once you have
one set up as you want, just copy and use it.

RE: Copy selected master pages into template

2009-01-30 Thread Martinek, Carla
There's no way to do this directly from your source document.

Create an import_from file using a new blank document. Import the master
pages from your current file into that document. In the import_from doc,
delete all the master pages until you have only the two master pages you
want to import into all the other files. Use this new file as your
source to import into all of the other docs.

RE: Copy selected master pages into template

2009-01-30 Thread Owen, Clint
Nancy,

Open the document with the new master pages. Delete all of the master
pages except the ones that you want to import into other documents.
Leave this document open.

Create a book file that contains all of the target documents, which do
not have to be open. From the book file, select all of the target
documents. From the file menu select Import and Formats. Deselect all of
the options except Page Layouts. Now you will be importing only your new
master pages into all of your target documents.

If the names of the new master pages are different, they will be added
to the existing masters in the target. If the names are the same, the
old will be replaced by the new.

It depends...

Are these custom master pages, or changes you've made to the default
Left and Right? If the latter, you're home free -- just delete any other
master pages from the doc (or a copy), and you're ready to import from
it. In the destination doc, select File Import Formats, select the
source doc, deselect everything except Page Layouts, and click Import.

If the two you've created are custom master pages, there's a rub: you
can't delete the default Left and Right pages, so importing master pages
from this source doc will import the default ones as well.

If the defaults are the same in the source as the destination (or can be
made so easily), it's no problem -- just delete any other custom pages
you don't want to propagate, and import away.

Alternatively, I'm sure it's possible, using FrameScript or FrameAC, to
import only custom master pages, but I don't recall seeing a script that
does that.

Cross-references within a web browser...PDF to PDF

2. If a user is at Paragraph 1.14.3 and attempts to go to Chapter 5,

3. Now, if a user is at Paragraph 1.14.3 and attempts to go to

Template conversion, framemaker native formats

2009-01-30 Thread Art Campbell
The Clean Import plugin does all the import work in one step. And removes
the old settings.
It's from Electropubs.

And there are a couple other similar plugins and scripts too...

When a cross-file link opens the target PDF but on the default opening page
instead of the destination specified, this typically indicates that the
named destination is not present in the target PDF.

I suggest starting by verifying that all links are fully-functional when
the PDFs are opened locally in Acrobat/Reader.

[ In FrameMaker-authored PDFs, a common reason for random bad links is
having "Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs" turned off in
FrameMaker's PDF setup, Links tab. ]

Copy selected master pages into template

Is there a way to do this?

When you create a "blank document" (File > New > Use Blank Paper) it's
not really an empty, formatless document -- it has a pgf catalog, char
catalog, master pages, ref pages, xref formats, etc.

IIRC, these default formats/settings come from the shellnew.fm file in
your FM installation's fminit directory, and you can modify that file so
future "blank" documents have the characteristics you want.

But I'm not sure what the point of step 1 in your procedure is. If you
have a template file, as you suggest in step 2, save a copy of it under
a new name and paste the contents into that instead of into a "blank"

Unlike Word, FM doesn't have
dedicated, special-purpose template files that you "hook" into your
regular docs. An FM "template" is just a plain FM file. So once you have
one set up as you want, just copy and use it.

Copy selected master pages into template

2009-01-30 Thread Martinek, Carla
There's no way to do this directly from your source document.

Create an import_from file using a new blank document. Import the master
pages from your current file into that document. In the import_from doc,
delete all the master pages until you have only the two master pages you
want to import into all the other files. Use this new file as your
source to import into all of the other docs.

Have you taken a look at FrameMaker 9 any of you? I just sat looking
around in it yesterday, and it looks promising enough IMHO. I like
the new UI especially I really like better links management. It could
better - it could look like InDesigns, but it is still progress.

Copy selected master pages into template

If the latter, you're home free -- just delete any other
master pages from the doc (or a copy), and you're ready to import from
it. In the destination doc, select File > Import Formats, select the
source doc, deselect everything except Page Layouts, and click Import.

Alternatively, I'm sure it's possible, using FrameScript or FrameAC, to
import only custom master pages, but I don't recall seeing a script that
does that.

HTH!
Richard

redirecting all cross-ref'ed fm fm files to the "home" folder

2009-01-30 Thread Wei Jiang (PT_ORG)
Hello Everyone,

I am now translating a book comprised of cross-referenced FM files which
were originally scattered in different locations of the client's hard disk.
He had sent me the package in a "flat" zip file, ie, without the original
tree structure. My question is, is there a quick way to update all the
"broken" cross-ref links with all the files in one single folder?

TIA!
