FrameMaker 8.0p277 hanging problems
Hi Framers: I have Vista Business edition with 4 gigs on a new machine. I have quite a few years on FM so am fairly confident it is a FM problem but the only hard evidence is from a Vista Log file: viz. Log Name: Application Source:Application Error Date: 2009/01/10 11:58:39 AM Event ID: 1000 Task Category: (100) Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: Porsche Description: Faulting application FrameMaker.exe, version 8.0.0.0, time stamp 0x48366e48, faulting module BIB.dll, version 1.2.1.1, time stamp 0x4691999f, exception code 0xc005, fault offset 0x1940, process id 0xddc, application start time 0x01c972f2a2c6cf00. It has no problems generating the .ps file with low resolution images ticked, but hangs when it comes to the full Monty. What is so frustrating is that there is no log file and Vista will not repond to Instead one gets the "Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog" millions of queries on the web but nothing on MS sites and then a blue screen. I have done subbooks and these work, but as soon as the file gets close to full size, the problem re-emerges. FM 8.0p277 has worked flawlessly up to about two weeks ago. Since then there have been MS Vista updates but I cannot make up my mind whether this is some obscure service starting up or something I have not done within FM. I have installed nothing new I am printing to smallest file size option within FM Any ideas? Any fellow travelers? Rob Shell > *** >
Using wickies
Our Honeywell doc group is currently using Frame 7.1, but we're considering using a wicki as a doc review "center."? Have any of you used a wicki as a joint-authorship medium--that is, have reviewers and/or customers actually collaborate on the same wicki file that eventually becomes the finished wicki (not Frame) document?
Can FrameMaker variables be part of a hypertext link without losing their formatting in CHMs generated by WebWorks?
Hello all. This list has been so helpful to me, I'm hoping you can help once again! The main question is, "Can FrameMaker variables be part of a hypertext link without losing their formatting in CHMs generated using WebWorks?" The Context * Using both FrameMaker 7.0 and 7.2 (not at the same time, of course!) * Generating a CHM file using Webworks Publisher 2003 The Goal -- To create a hypertext marker (in the format: "message URL .chm::/.htm") embedded in a phrase (such as " "), for example: "WidgitWorld Cool Schema Help". Additional Factors and Complications is a FrameMaker variable containing the product name (for example, the variable contains "WidgitWorld"). is FrameMaker text, three words (for example, "Cool Schema Help"). The entire phrase, productName> , has a character tag applied to it. The entire phrase comprises the link; we want the entire phrase (all four words) to visually be part of the link. The marker is somewhere in the middle of the phrase -- not before the variable, obviously not in the variable, and not right after the variable... The marker is applied by selecting the entire phrase. The Problem -- Sometimes, in an intermittent fashion, hypertext links of this sort don't display correctly in the CHM. Some do, some don't. The character tag format disappears off either the entire text or just the first couple of letters of the text. The Solution - Is there one? Can FrameMaker handle variables that are part of hypertext links? Thanks! [Techshoret] Re: FrameMaker index question
Thanks Shlomo. I tried your idea and it worked. I just want to point out that it seems that making the fonts the same in index entry style and the page number style was not enough. I also had to click Update All to remove the overrides. I assume that is by design but it's a bit confusing. I wish Adobe could figure out how to simplify their interfaces. -- Regards, Shmuel Wolfson Technical Writer 052-763-7133 Shlomo Perets wrote: > Shmuel, > > You wrote: > > > When I make an index in FM, only the page number is hyperlinked. > > Someone asked me to make the text in the index also hyperlinked. > > Is this possible, and if so, how would I do this? > > If there is no character formatting present in the index, differentiating > the page number from the index term, the hypertext marker present in front > of the first page number extends its active area on both sides of the > marker: to the beginning of the paragraph (including the index term), and > to the end of the paragraph or the beginning of the next hypertext marker > (when there are two entries). RoboSource Control
Hi all, I've recently started using RoboHelp for documentation in addition to FrameMaker. One of the features that comes with RoboHelp is a program called RoboSource Control. RoboSource Control is a light weight version control program and database. I love it. It tracks every change made to a file and because you are checking files out instead of working on a LAN, there is very little latency like there can be with FrameMaker. Here's my FrameMaker question: has anyone tried using RoboSource with FrameMaker? What were your results? I am thinking that if RoboSource could be used with FrameMaker, it would solve the major latency issues I have been having working with large books. -- Sincerely, Joseph Lorenzini

Can FrameMaker variables be part of a hypertext link without losing their formatting in CHMs generated by WebWorks?
You don't really give details of your entire workflow... for instance if you output to RoboHelp or MIF2go or something else... But it I were you, given the unpredictable nature of the results and that you're on an old version, I'd think about adding a step in production that uses FrameScript to check and convert the variables to text after the edit cycles are complete. However, it would probably be worth your while to evaluate the Tech Comm Suite 2 to see if the newer software and integrated workflow solves your problem. But he still doesn't say if the system default printer is set to Adobe PDF or a hard printer somewhere, which is a key diagnostic... Are there any other users at his site who can open the file? Given that it works on your system, that he may be running three unsupported versions of (FM 5-7) on a system, that he gets continual missing fonts messages but hasn't cleared them, and that he doesn't know how to install fonts would make me wonder about his level of system setup expertise Art Art Campbell art.campbell at gmail.com "... Thanks! Re: [Techshoret] Re: FrameMaker index question
