Error generating WebHelp/WebHelpPlus output in Flare v4.2

2009-03-05 Thread David Schor
I don't understand you people. When did this become the Forum for FrameMaker
as Stand-alone only? By your definition, this list should also be out of
bounds for anyone using FrameMaker with another program.

So please, no more FrameMaker/Webworks questions please. Those of you who
want to import Word files to FM or export FM to Word, don't waste our time.
To the writer who just asked about highlighting CorelDraw graphics in FM to
appear in Acrobat, sorry too many other applications in your question.
Mif2Go users? Go away and bother Jeremy, and leave us alone.

\end sarcasm

Seriously, for the first time, I am disappointed with this list and I've
subscribed to it for a long time already. I turned to this forum for help
because work in Framemaker is a significant part of the workflow in which I
had a problem. The error occurs during import of FRAMEMAKER files. So what,
pray tell, is so irrelevant here that some of you have to flame me? If you
don't know the answer and don't care, then please be quiet - no shame in
that because Flare is a relatively new program and many people have yet to
work with it. But as long as FrameMaker is being used in conjunction with
other products and in the production of content in multiple output formats,
then questions regarding the FrameMaker relationship to the workflow are
perfectly legitimate on this list and not a waste of time. Be tolerant
enough to realize that other workplaces use FrameMaker in different ways
than yours. It's not 1994 anymore, but 2009.

Highlighting specific components in a graphic in a PDF

Subject: Highlighting specific components in a graphic in a PDF

Situation:
- Maintenance Manual for a printer.
- Framemaker 8 source files on WinXP.
- 2-D exploded diagram graphics pulled from the CAD system. Each diagram
has parts from multiple kits in it. Files created in CorelDraw and/or
Illustrator.
- Documents distributed via PDFs on a CD, although they are also
formatted for print.
- Currently using Acrobat 8 Pro.

The product manager wants the writer (not me) to draw boxes around the
various parts in the exploded diagram to highlight what's in specific
kits. (Never mind that the components of each kit are called out in
another section, with their own graphics..)

Instead of doing this and crowding up a graphic that already has bunches
of parts and lines, I'm thinking that there is a way to create a graphic
that when we mouse over a legend indicating different kit numbers, the
appropriate parts will highlight in the PDF.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Carla

As Baruch indicated, Acrobat form fields or layers may be used with 2D
graphics.

Another option (which may actually be simpler to implement) is to use 3D data
from the CAD system and integrate it as live 3D in the PDF.

In http://www.microtype.com/showcase/3DAsst/PartEmphasis-3d.pdf
(which happens to demonstrate a printer ink cartridge), clicking a name
in a list highlights the corresponding part.

In http://www.microtype.com/showcase/3DAsst/SearchPartName.pdf ,
clicking a part displays its name; searching for a part name (complete or
partial, eg "plate") highlights the matching part(s).

If only to pour gas on the fire:

If you specifically state that the workflow includes FM, then it's a
legal question.

If it wasn't clear to readers here, then your communication wasn't
adequate for your question. Problems always need complete disclosure of
means and variables.

As for Flare, I detest it. It has always seemed to me one of the more
basackwards ways of producing any output. The interface isn't organized,
there seems to me to be inadequate documentation on how to use it, and
finding information to solve problems never was simple because users do
things in so many different ways while using it.

Of course, your mileage may vary with it.

Translations or Localisation of Framemaker content

2009-03-05 Thread Fred Staal
Hi Framers,

We have two rather large technical manuals (300+ pages each with text and
illustrations) that will need to be translated into Russian (90-95% of the
material is common to both manuals). The content involves low to mid-level
information on mechanical, hydraulic, high-power, low-power, fiber-optic, and
telemetry systems (and a kitchen sink). We have not had to do any translations
prior to this, so it is unknown territory. I'd appreciate any comments about
how the process works, how to make it successful, and what pitfalls to avoid.
You can contact me off-list if you prefer or if you have specific
recommendations.

I've played with it a little and it looks promising-- though I miss Word's
live grammar checking capabilities. But it's free, it works with FM, and
Adobe is providing the download, so it appears to have their blessing. For
those doing translating, the plugin also tracks previously translated

searching for a section symbol

2009-03-05 Thread Alan Litchfield
Carol,

As I understand it there is no dialog operator to find that. I guess that is
the case because it is 'outside' the text flow and therefore is not searched
as a 'text symbol'. Your best option is to search for end-of-paragraph
symbols.

If however you are seeking to navigate to the end of a flow of text, I think
there is a way to move the Insertion Point to the end of a flow (IPEndOfFlow)
but I can't think of it at the moment. It may be neccesary for you to define a
keyboard command for this action(?).

Information on Customizing FrameMaker's behaviour can be found here:
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FrameMaker/8.0/customize_frame.pdf

(Sorry, you didn't say which version).

Error generating WebHelp/WebHelpPlus output in Flare v4.2

2009-03-05 Thread Jon Harvey
Hi David,

I can defend your position and help you with your problem but only to a
limited degree on both. I've used Flare and FrameMaker together for a
couple of years and I can tell you that the issue you are facing may
appear to be related to FM but is entirely a Flare issue. When Flare
imports files, it invokes Acrobat to convert some (but not all) image
types it encounters in your FrameMaker files. I haven't had enough
graphics problems when importing files to investigate the nuances of
how, when, or why Flare does this. However, I can recommend that you
contact Flare support rather than post this issue on the FM users list.
You can call MadCap Software at 1-888-623-2271 ext #3.

I know you're getting some negative feedback from FM users on this. I
hope it doesn't discourage you from posting FM issues in the future.

Hmm. I only did the quickest test so didn't encounter finding all those
other spaces. Does seem like \f has no effect.

However, you might be able to work with ' $' (space, dollar sign) with
wildcards turned on. That finds a space at the end of a paragraph or
cell (not the end of a line, as the Help says) -- also throughout the
whole doc., not just tables. Depending on your document, it could help...

Re: Error generating WebHelp/WebHelpPlus output in Flare v4.2

RE: Error generating WebHelp/WebHelpPlus output in Flare v4.2

Well, I just disabled the option "Auto-reimport before 'Generate Output'". I
was then able to generate the WebHelpPlus output.
Apparently, the error below does not prevent me from importing source files
but it does stop everything when the import is included with the output
generation.
Still, I don't like that error message.

FW: Framemaker image problem

2009-03-05 Thread Brabson, Michelle
This post is from a colleague of mine.

I have a growing problem with imported images into FrameMaker 7.2.

I typically work off a network. A few months ago, I started getting an odd
message when I'd try to save files with images that are imported objects.
(These are files I've worked on for years.) Even if I didn't change the image
but only, say, changed the footer information, I'd get the following message:

"An internal error occurred while writing imported graphics in this document.
The file has been saved, but has lost some image data. "

Our production manager looked at the files, copying them to her desktop, and
had no problems. So I started working on those files on my desktop, and for a
short time, the problem disappeared, only to come back worse than ever.

Now, whenever I save a document into which I've inserted an image, I get this
message. I've tried 'File>Import>File...Import by Reference,'
File>Import>File...Copy into Document,' 'File>Import>Object...Create from
File...Link,' and File>Import>Object...Create from File' (without a link). I've
tried to import Canvas files (.cnv), Visio files (.vsd), plain .jpgs and plain
.gifs, and always get the same result.

Once this occurs, I have a file in the same path as my original file with a
seemingly random 3-character extension after the .fm, such as 'CO4' or '357'.
If I double-click the file and open with Frame, or if I delete the wonky
extension, the file opens, but a grey box is displayed instead of the image.

I'm on FrameMaker 7.2p158, with Window XP Professional Version 5.1 (Build
2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.080814-1236 : Service Pack 3).

Our production manager found a previous post about Service Pack 3 of XP causing
problems with imported images, but she is also on Service Pack 3 and is not
having this problem.

I am on digest. Please respond directly to the e-mail addresses so we may see
your comments when you make them.

Error generating WebHelp/WebHelpPlus output in Flare v4.2

2009-03-05 Thread David Schor
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to make a trial run during my first Flare v4.2 project. I
imported FrameMaker 7.2 files as my sources, and for now at least, graphics
are included. However, I received an error message, both during FM import
and now, during WebHelp/WebHelpPlus output generation:

"Compiler (Internal Error): Found the path
 C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\Acrodist.exe
to Adobe Distiller but the executable doesn't exist.
Adobe Distiller is required for converting Adobe FrameMaker graphics.
Aborted."

Problem is that Acrobat 7.1, not 8, is installed on my PC. During FM import,
the process continued and I was able to open the sources with the graphics
in Flare. However, when I attempted a trial run at generating output, this
error appeared and aborted the task. No output.

So, is Flare v4.2 only support Acrobat 8, meaning I must purchase an upgrade
in order to work with Flare? Or is there a way to fix this problem in the
configuration?

System parameters: Windows XP Professional SP3, FM 7.2, Flare 4.2, Acrobat
7.1 Professional, Acrobat Distiller 7.1

TIA,
David

Minimize all Frame windows at once?

2009-03-05 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi, everyone.

I'm working in a document with about 20 chapter files. Before I do a
book-level search, I usually have only one chapter expanded and all the
others are minimized at the bottom of the Frame window. During the
search, Frame expands every chapter and leaves them all expanded after
the search.

Is there a way to minimize them all at once, so that just the Book file
remains open and everything else is minimized at the bottom of the Frame
window? I googled this but found nothing.

searching for a section symbol

2009-03-05 Thread Robert Evans
Carol,

The FM help and book both list \f as being the sequence for finding the
end-of-flow or end-of-table-cell character (which I think is what you
mean by the section symbol), so something like "[0-9] \f" _should_ work.

However, trying it out (on FM 7, Windows XP), it does seem to work, but
will also find anything with a ending with a digit and a space, so
adding \f doesn't seem to do much.

Is this a bug in FM7? I'm sure I've used \f in the past for tidying up
tables and it worked (only it didn't actually select the end-of-flow
symbol, and of course you can't replace it).

Flare support."

Why not? Work in FrameMaker is an integral part of this process, and the
problem is specifically happening with import of FrameMaker files into
Flare, which I believe that some other members of this forum are doing also,
occasionally. It's perfectly reasonable to believe and hope that there are
FM users on this list that can answer my question.

Structured Frame Help

2009-03-05 Thread roconn...@netspace.net.au
Hi guys
I haven't used Framemaker for about 7 yrs (unfortunately) and only used
unstructured Frame in V5.5

Does anyone out there have some source templates, or a small book example of a
structured doc? I need to get up and racing pretty quickly and I figure using
an existing example is always the easiest way.

I have Framemaker 7.1 right now but will be moving to V8.0 next week and
utilising the DITA mapping as well. So rather than panicking I'm screaming for
help.

any help is appreciated.
bye for now

searching for a section symbol

Stuart, Dick, and all,

When I search for text using the backslash-f term with Wildcards
turned on, I receive a message that "The item you are searching for
requires text in the Find text box." When I precede the backslash-f
term with a space, then I find every space in the entire doc--not
just the ones at the end of table cells. The same result occurs if I
use the string "[0-9] \f" or "[a-z] \f" I'm using Frame 7 on a Win2K
system. Someone indicated having the same problem on an XP system as
well. So searching for an end of table cell symbol may indeed not be possible.

To the others who replied (thank you!), I wasn't looking for an end
of paragraph symbol (\p) or a typographic section symbol (Alt-0167),
or a forced-return symbol (\r).

It's actually called an end of flow symbol or end of table cell symbol,
and the wildcard to use is \f. Search for ' \f' without the single

Numbering Lists for book

2009-03-05 Thread Carol Gosnell
Hi,

I am sure someone knows the answer to this, but it is eluding me...

I am numbering graphics and tables in a multi-chapter book. The project
manager would like to generate one List of Figures and one List of
Tables (sequential numbers for each list).

How do I do that? Each chapter begins the numbering anew and the only
thing I can think of is to add a chapter prefix to the autonumbering in
the paragraph tag, but I'd rather have a much simpler list.

Thanks in advance for your help.

2009-03-05 Thread David Schor
Well, I just disabled the option "Auto-reimport before 'Generate Output'". I
was then able to generate the WebHelpPlus output.
Apparently, the error below does not prevent me from importing source files
but it does stop everything when the import is included with the output
generation.
Still, I don't like that error message.

TIA,
David
